Firearm proficiency requires sustainment, and shooters need to practice with their firearms on a regular and structured plan. Regrettably that doctrine comes with some excess baggage – cost, safety, convenience. With the rising cost of ammunition, dollars are a major disincentive to regular practice. The fully loaded cost of range time includes travel to and from the range, range fees that can be as high as $25 for one hour, targets and anywhere from 100 to 200 rounds of ammunition in the caliber of your choosing. One hour at the range can easily set you back $100; if you do that once a week you’re looking at a $400 monthly outlay, so it makes a great deal of sense to have a supplement. Dry firing has been an excellent way to reinforce live fire training; however, it does have its downside. First, the shooter receives no feedback. Second, there is a potential for the dreaded accidental discharge.
LaserLyte training products can be safely used in the home, or garage, to simulate any number of training scenarios. You’re limited only by your imagination. The Steel Tyme target has a laser sensing surface that is 2.5 inches in diameter; this makes for an interesting challenge at 20 feet. I worked a number of pistol drills at a 20 foot range; shooting from a covered position, low light drills and coming out of a holster. In the event that the kids or spouse are asleep while you’re trying to get some practice in, there is a front panel slide switch that disables the audio output but you still have visual feedback. The Steel Tyme targets also have a wall hanger arrangement on the back, so you can readily wall mount this trainer target just about surface. The beauty of LaserLyte’s laser targets is their portability; you can take them anywhere any time. Great!

Ease of use is also noteworthy and if you can install 3 AAA batteries and flip a switch you can use the Steel Tyme targets or just about any of the company’s other laser trainers and laser targets. LaserLyte includes a Trainer Trigger Tyme Laser Compact Pistol with the Laser Steel Tyme Kit. The trainer pistol has the look and feel of GLOCK 42/43 pistol and provides a realistic training tool that activates any of LaserLyte’s laser trainer targets. It’s also completely safe and will not accept live ammo.
There is merit in using your own firearm to train, weight and sight alignment are critical variables. For those occasions, LaserLyte manufactures a laser trainer pistol kit that allows you to chamber a laser trainer of the appropriate caliber. A striker or hammer impact fires the laser.
