GLOCK INC DEBUTS THE GLOCK 47 MOS
By: Sal PalmaI’ve yet to meet a parent who has not been confronted by their child asking: mommy where didIcomefrom,so it’s not inappropriateto learn where the Glock 47 MOS came from.
The Glock 47 MOS is the product of an $85 million/10-year contract with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection in 2019. The G47 is built on a G45 frame and uses the more compact G19 recoil system. The G47 will accept the G19 Gen 5 slide, and the G19 Gen 5 accepts the longer G47 slide. The design gives CBP personnel a choice of a long slide on a shorter frame, or a shorter slide onatallerframe.Thisbegsthequestion, whynot just buy a G17 MOS Gen 5 and a Glock 19 MOS Gen 5. The only rational answer must be cost management. I don’t know the answer to that
question, but our CBP agents now carry Glock Perfection.
The G47 slide and barrel is the same length as a Glock 17 and ships with the marksman barrel. At the range, the Glock Marksman Barrel delivered good groups at 15 yards.
The G47 is chambered in 9mm and like the G17, has a17-roundmagazine plus one in the pipe. It will also accept G19X, G34, G17 and G45 magazines.
Under the hood, once a Glock always a Glock and the G47 field strips like any other Glock.
The G47 has a flared magazine well making reloads smoother
I was expecting a heavy trigger but was pleasantly surprised at its 3 lb. 5.5oz trigger pull. This was an average of three measurements; however, inthe interest ofconservatism let’s call it a 4 lb. trigger. Trigger resets were short and audible.
The G47 ships with three magazines, two backstraps and polymer OEM sights, an all too familiar Glock malady. So, for this review, I ended up replacing the sights with the excellent XS Sights night sights.
I think it’s safe to say that the G47 comes from CBP’s need for a platform with one hundred percent parts compatibility and interchangeability with the Glock 19; eliminating the need for an inventory of separate parts and components.
As to Glock’s decision to not make the G47 commercially available until 2023, when you consider that the CBP contract runs until 2029 and that the G47 does not provide a capability that could reasonably be limited to law enforcement, Glock’s decision to not release the G47 until 2023 must have been a matter of production management. However, it’s 2023 and the Glock 47 MOS has landed I think it will be well received, as it’s Glock Perfection in every respect.
