HOLOSUN P.ID
By: Sal PalmaHOLOSUN introduced the P.ID (Positive Identification Device) line of weapon mounted lights in October of 2022. Their offerings consist of four models: P.ID, P.ID HC, P.ID Plus, and P.ID Dual, it is Holosun’s first venture into the lighting space. My review focuses on the line’s entry level model, the P.ID
TheP.IDlightisathomeonafull-sizedframeand features two modes: High and Low. It’s powered by a rechargeable flat top, 18350 battery that delivers a one hour run time.
All electrical circuits need a supply and return. Some manufacturers use their aluminum housing as the return path to complete a circuit; however, HOLOSUN took a different and interesting approach to powering the P.ID., they encapsulate the battery in an aluminum sleeve whichcontactsthebezeltoprovideareturnpath for battery supplied current to its L.E.D. So, you need to tighten the bezel down until it contacts the aluminum sleeve, or the light will not work.
Charging the battery is done without dismountingthelightusingtheexternalcharging port.
Holosun didn’t use a standard USB-C charging port on its P.ID. Their approach was to use a USB magnetic charging cable that connects with the P. ID’s charging port
HOLOSUN included an L.E.D. charging status indicator. When the battery is charging, you’ll see a red light. The L.E.D. will change to green when the battery is fully charged and will provide one hour of run time.
Operating the light is accomplished via ambidextrous paddle switches. Press any side once and the light will operate continuously.
Pressandholdany sideandthelightwilloperate momentarily going off as soon as the switch is released.Press both paddles simultaneouslyand the light will switch from High to Low or Low to High. Lastly, three rapid taps on either side will power down the light so that it cannot be accidentallyactivated.Threerapidtapsagainwill power the light up.
The P.ID produces a wide beam of white light with an acceptably defined hot spot and an abundance of peripheral lighting On High, I was able to illuminate a thick tree line at 138 yards.
Holosun’s first foray into the lighting business is consistent with their expanding line of weapon mounted accessories, a space populated with very competitive offerings. Ultimately, the market will determine if they succeed, but if the P.ID is an indicator, Holosun’s lighting future seems bright.
