Spyderco EUROEDGE™ – what Bond would carry! By: Sal Palma

It’s unlikely that knifemaker Ed Schempp intended his EUROEDGE design to be described as a gentleman’s pocket folder; however, its ethnic elegance, materials and construction merit the accolade. This is one gorgeous faux pocket pugnale! Spyderco’s EUROEDGE is right out of the recently released Atomic Blond film and precisely what Afrikaner Charlize Theron would carry as she slashes KGB agents in East Berlin. Ian Fleming would certainly have chosen it as 007’s very worthy backup for his trusty Walther. For this writer’s taste, Ferrari and Lamborghini have nothing over Schempp’s creation, but alas beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Spyderco describes the blade as nearsymmetrical. The blade tip is smack-dab centered along the knife’s longitudinal axis, which is hard to do without near perfect symmetry.

Adding to the knife’s sex appeal is its satin steel finish and bead blasted fullers, that I still call blood grooves; although, their real function is to lighten and strengthen the blade and having nothing to do with being able to pull the blade out of flesh.

The EUROEDGE handle is also very elegant with its polished G10 scales and maintains the same esthetics as the blade by continuing fullers along its axis.

Since time immemorial, dating as far back as 2400 B.C., the dagger has been the preferred assassin’s weapon. In more recent history Fairbairn and Sykes made extensive use of the dagger at the OSS. Daggers are a thrusting blade capable of delivering lethal stab wounds with

their very fast point and extraordinary penetration. They are not to be trifled with! As impressed as I am with this knife’s esthetics, the pragmatist in me insists that it have something under the hood; quite happily, Schempp and Spyderco made sure of that. It’s established fact that a dagger blade features two or more sharp edges. This works well for fixed blade designs but certainly not a desirable attribute in a folding knife, for obvious reason. The EUROEDGE folder features a dagger blade profile but with a single edge; hence, my referring to Schempp’s knife as a faux dagger. However, in application and performance there’s nothing faux about it. Looking under the hood, the EUROEDGE blade is constructed from CPM® S30V® steel with a blade thickness of 0.157” (4mm) and a Rockwell hardness of 58-60. The blade length of 3.92 inches is sufficient for a defensive role, and 3.75 inches of that is occupied by a finely honed edge. Blade lock up can only be described as robust and rock solid. This elegant knife’s folder status does not detract from its dagger role. Experience counts and Ed Schempp did an extraordinary job with the EUROEDGE handle. I’ve already mentioned its very elegant 3-Dmachined G-10 scales, but backing those elegant scales is a very substantial stainless steel liner contributing to its considerable structural integrity. And, like all great daggers its center of gravity is well back on its handle.

Like properly sized shoes, a knife needs to sit comfortably in the hand and here Ed knocks it out of the ball park. Handle size and shape, along with the placement of its finger coils, lets the EUROEDGE feel like a natural extension of the hand.

Ed Schempp is a historical designer and knifemaker. All of his work is heavily influenced by antiquities from a variety of countries, and in his EUROEDGE, the Swiss Dagger clearly played an influential role leading to a modern and very elegant design.

There is no doubt that Spyderco’s master piece EUROEDGE qualifies as a gentleman’s pocket knife. But, make no mistake this ethnic folder is a beast in every respect and not to be trifled with. Spyderco’s EUROEDGE is worth every cent of its $375 M.S.R.P. The old saying that a Rolex tells much more than time applies equally well to this brilliantly executed folder.
