The ProTac HL® USB Headlamp. – A high lumen USB rechargeable headlamp from Streamlight By: Sal Palma
Whether you’re a mechanic, EMT, medical doctor, rock climber, hiker, police officer, soldier or sailor, a quality headlamp can be a very handy tool to have in your kit. You just don’t know when we’ll need a bit of hands-free illumination; that’s your business case for a quality headlamp. Fitting that description is Streamlight’s latest addition to the ProTac HL family of USB rechargeable illumination products. As a member of the ProTac Family, its TEN-TAP® programming offers the user three modes of operation high/medium/low (factory default); high only; or low/medium/high. The ProTac HL® USB Headlamp is a lightweight flamethrower at its maximum rated output of 1000 lumens. On high, the headlamp will illuminate out to 200+ yards with a bright penetrating flood and a run time of 1.5 hours.
longer run time of 2.45 hours. The low setting offers a less intense beam of 65 lumens that works very well as a task or navigation light with an extended run time of up to 20 hours.
The ProTac HL USB headlamp is not a dual fuel design. It ships with a rechargeable lithium ion battery that’s rechargeable via the sealed USB port on the housing. However, if you subscribe to the theory that “two is one and one is none,” you can pick up a Streamlight 18650 lithium ion battery to provide the necessary redundancy. The one caveat here is that the 18650 will not recharge in the light, you need to use its own charger. The ProTac HL USB Headlamp can be charged from any number of USB sources to include wall chargers, desktop computer, laptops or vehicle USB ports.
The light’s medium setting offers 400 lumens with usable illumination to 147-meters and a Copyright 2017, Twobirds Flying Publication, All Rights Reserved

The headlamp weighs in at a very comfortable 8.1 ounces with its included battery and head strap. Streamlight used a T-shaped housing machined from 6000 series aircraft grade aluminum. The battery housing is 4 inches wide and the head extends to just a hair over 2.5 inches or about 3 inches if the mount is included in that measurement. The head also articulates a full 90° allowing you to position the light as needed; not your head. Now to the niceties! Streamlight does not castigate their customer by making him or her pay for colored lens filters. They ship the headlamp with a diffuser (produces a very nice flood effect), green and red filters. Here they left me wanting for a blue lens filter – the ideal color for medical work and / or tracking blood, and while I’m at it, I might as well ask for an IR filter. Last but not least in the niceties category is the rubber strap, which does a great job of securing the headlamp over a hardhat. I would like to see an optional “a la Wilcox” polymer mount so you can use the headlamp with your favorite bump helmet.
