U

nrest was rife among Kalkfontein residents this past weekend when they took to the streets demanding that beneficiaries of the Highbury Phase 3 project be local.

The protest action came after it was announced that 100 of the beneficiaries will come from New Rest, Philippi – a decision

believed to have been made by the provincial Department of Human Settlements.

According to ward 19 councillor, Ricardo Saralina, the houses were originally only allocated to beneficiaries from his ward but after speaking to ward 11 councillor Desiree Visagie of the need for housing in Sarepta, the decision was taken to ensure that residents from Sarepta also become beneficiaries. The project, located on the corner of Nooiensfontein Road and the Stellenbosch

Arterial, is nearing completion of its 264 units. Community liaison officer (CLO) Ryno Olyn says the entire process ran quite smoothly.

“The process ran smoothly and there was community engagement. It should however be noted that even though there are 264 units, not all of these have necessarily been allocated to beneficiaries from wards 11 and 19.”

Despite it being confirmed that beneficia-

ries will also hail from ward 11, Visagie is unable to confirm the number, as she has not yet received confirmation of the number from the Department of Human Settlements.

Local Kalkfontein resident Johannes Pula, who was instrumental in organising the past weekend’s protest action, confirms the action was a result of the 100 beneficiaries coming from New Rest.

hree local ward councillors in the northern suburbs of Cape Town will serve on re-elected mayor Dan Plato’s Mayoral Committee (Mayco), as announced on Sunday.

They are Brackenfell and Kuils River ward councillor Marian Nieuwoudt, Kraaifontein and Brackenfell ward councillor Grant Twigg, and Kuils River councillor Malusi Booi. Twigg and Booi are also the subcouncil chairpersons for subcouncils 2 and 21.

Nieuwoudt, who also served on Plato’s former Mayco, was appointed as the new Mayco member for finance.

She will stay on as ward councillor in Brackenfell, but will be assisted in the ward by proportional councillor Annelise van Zyl. “I believe the new committee to be an effective and experienced team, with young blood bringing new ideas and initiatives. The mayor is clearly taking the lead with goal-oriented expectations being spelled out. We are united in our pursuit to better service delivery,” Nieuwoudt says. Twigg is the new Mayco member for Area North and Booi the new Mayco member for Area Central.

James Vos, a previous ward councillor in Edgemead and Bothasig, previous Mayco member for Helen Zille and most recently the DA shadow minister for tourism in the Western Cape, was appointed the new Mayco member for assets and facilities.

Vos says this appointment comes at a time of increasing public awareness of the political affairs of the City of Cape Town.

Forest Heights Primary honours learners F

orest Heights Primary School celebrated the achievements of its learners at the annual prize-giving ceremony on Wednesday 7 November. The ceremony was hosted at the Forest Village Leadership Academy.

School principal, Anthea Bosman, said the ceremony is a means of acknowledging learners who have displayed excellence throughout the year.

Each learner who excelled in a subject received a medal and a certificate, with the top achiever in every grade receiving a medal, certificate, a trophy and a voucher with which to purchase stationery needed for next year.

Bosman made special mention of Grade 7 learner, Azhlynne Prins, who out of 12 subjects took home trophies for nine of her subjects, and was awarded top achiever in the grade. Prins was also awarded the Principal’s Award for 2018. “This award is given to a learner who has shown tenacity, academic excellence, represented the vision and mission of the school and earned the respect of learners as well as staff,” explained Bosman.

Prins was awarded a gift from Computer Mania, a crystal trophy to take home, an engraved shield which will be on display at the school and a voucher with which to purchase stationery.

Bosman shared that Prins is still unsure of what she would like to become someday but she has indicated that Mathematics is her favourite subject. “A bright future awaits this whiz kid,” said Bosman.

“The school congratulates all parents who attended the event and wishes them well on the achievements of their children.”

“We can’t bring in 100 beneficiaries, which will probably result in over 400 people moving here, if our own people are still living as backyarders,” says Pula. “Crime will increase and our schools will be too small, or overcrowded.”

Residents participating in the protest action on the Saturday demanded a meeting with Saralina. He addressed the crowd on Sunday, where he was given the mandate to organise a meeting with representatives from the Department of Human Settlements. “We are hoping to have the meeting on Thursday (tomorrow) at Kalkfontein Primary School at 19:00,” says Pula.

Despite the unhappiness regarding the beneficiaries from New Rest, Pula says it is important the proper channels and criteria be ascribed to by local beneficiaries. “We want things to be done right. People must fulfil the necessary criteria and they must be on the waiting list,” says Pula.

Saralina reiterates these sentiments. “I do understand my community from Kalkfontein’s desperation for houses and I will always be their voice and fight for their needs. We must however make sure we follow the proper processes and that we do not bypass the waiting list.”

South Africans get into Black Friday Research shows that the Black Friday phenomenon has grown faster in South Africa than any other country in the world.

Black Friday, a retail promotion that takes place on the last Friday of November after the American Thanksgiving holiday, originated in America in the 1950s.

Last year, PriceCheck saw three times the number of daily visits to its online shopping comparison website on Black Friday, and twice the number on Cyber Monday, compared to its 2017 average. In addition, these visits were on average 30% longer than the 2017 average duration.

This year is likely to surpass that, with PayPal predicting that South Africans’ online shopping spend will top R53bn by the end of 2018, up from R37.1bn in 2017.

But as the South African online shopping market grows, providing more to choose from, shoppers should put a game plan in place to ensure they get the best deals from the most reliable and secure retailers.

Lebogang Mokubela, founder of township-based retail marketing company Lemok Group, says: “Black Friday marketing has been exceptional with millions of rand being invested to draw crowds to their offerings.”

Tygerberg nurse up for top award

R

aymond Visagie (58), assistant nursing manager: operating theatres at Tygerberg Hospital, is one of 12 nurses nominated for the prestigious Cecilia Makiwane Recognition Awards for 2018.

According to a media statement, the Kuils River resident, who has more than 38 years of experience in the nursing fraternity, manages 250 staff members, 33 operating theatres and the Central Sterilisation Department at Tygerberg Hospital.

“Nursing is all about caring. Working in the operating theatre you are required to care and tend to the more seriously ill or injured patients who truly need your help to survive. Helping save the lives of these patients is one of the most rewarding aspects of nursing,” says Visagie.

Visagie, who in 2013 was nominated as the Best Operating Theatre Nurse Manager of the Western Cape Academic Hospitals, and as the Best Aspiring Nurse Manager at Tygerberg Hospital in 2014, is always willing to learn new things.

“It is fundamental that as a nurse you stay on par with the latest surgery techniques and develop better ways to serve your patients – this is an essential requirement of nursing,” says Visagie.

Visagie dedicates vocational time and personal resources to assist with theatre projects such as the Flamingo Breast Cancer Project, Nelson Mandela Arthroplasty project and the Smile Project – a special project to correct facial deformities in children.

Visagie arranged staffing for the project and participated in all 43 operations done so far.

He also assisted in planning the opening of the Radiation Intervention Theatre, which reduces patient flow and assists with minimising patient waiting times.

Visagie, who is also the chairperson of the Western Cape Theatre Nurse Committee, was instrumental in coordinating the infrastructure, aesthetics and equipment for a dedicated paediatric operating theatre complex at Tygerberg Hospital, a first of its kind for the facility.

“Operating theatres can be referred to as the engine rooms of any hospital. To manage a theatre efficiently, there must be interaction and close cooperation among all theatre personnel. I take pride in ensuring that this process is done effectively, thus safeguarding the safety and wellbeing of patients,” he says.

Visagie, whose passion is caring for the elderly, also designed a “vroetelvoorskoot”.

“I designed a ‘vroetelvoorskoot’ – an activity apron for the dementia-afflicted and restless aged members, which has a calming effect. The aprons are distributed to old age homes as far as the Northern Cape since May 2017,” he says.

Mfuleni police make two arrests M

fuleni police arrested two men in the early hours of Sunday 4 November for being in possession of illegal ammunition and a firearm.

According to Mfuleni police spokesperson Captain Nomathemba Muavha, the arrests came after police acted on information from local residents, of a vehicle with two males who had a firearm in their possession.

“Police spotted the vehicle while patrolling in Mfuleni and stopped it. When searching the occupants and the vehicle, police found a 9mm Taurus pistol with the serial number filed off and 15 rounds of ammunition,” says Muavha.

The two men, aged 20 and 27 years old respectively, were then arrested and charged with the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

The men appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on Monday 5 November.

On the same day, an 18-year-old man, Kuhle Zakhe, also known as “Chicken”, was sentenced in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court to eight years’ direct imprisonment for attempted murder.

Zakhe was sentenced for an incident which took place on Wednesday 10 May at about 18:30 in Goodeve Street, Wesbank.

According to Muavha, Kuhle shot at men who were standing in the street, injuring a 19-year-old male. “The suspect by the name of ‘Chicken’ was identified as the one who had committed the crime,” says Muavha.

“He was arrested within that week and remanded in custody at one of the awaiting trial juvenile centres within the Western Cape, as he was 17 years old at the time.

He had been in custody since his trial.”

Mfuleni Police Station commander Brigadier Pieter Galant welcomed the sentence and thanked the community of Wesbank for working with the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant van Rooy, in ensuring that Zakhe was arrested and sentenced for the crime he committed.

“To the youth in the community, this serves as a reminder that gangsterism and crime do not pay,” says Muavha.

Man’s family sought Tygerberg Hospital is looking for the family of a male patient, registered as Luvuyo Konki, who was admitted on Wednesday 31 October.

The patient (about 54 years old) was picked up by ambulance in Gugulethu and brought to Tygerberg Hospital.

The patient has bruises on his nose and left elbow. He was wearing blue jeans with a black and white shirt.

elft’s very own Yanga Sobetwa has proven herself week after week and secured a spot in this week’s Idols SA Season 14 competition.

The 17-year-old rising star from Leiden has shown immense growth throughout the season. After debuting her first single “Scars (All Over Me)” in last week’s episode, Yanga received a standing ovation from the audience. Idols judge Unathi Msengana, who was left near tears, called Yanga’s performance “wonderous”, while Randall Abrahams told her: “You have chosen to be a winner.”

The Rhodes High learner, who is the youngest contestant on the show, previously

told TygerBurger her dream has always been to release an album and now she is able to use Idols as a platform to start her lifelong dream.

Yanga spoke to TygerBurger yesterday (Tuesday 13 November) and shared that she is highly blessed to have made it through to the finals of the singing competition. “I’ve made it through by the grace of God. He has given me this life-changing opportunity and I will make the most of it.”

With the release of the new single, she shot her first music video on Monday. She described this is an “awesome” experience and explained that the video was done in one take.

“When I arrived at the location to shoot the video we got briefed, had lunch and did rehearsals for about three hours.”

Now that the road of the Idols journey is nearing an end, Yanga said things have become less tense as last week Sunday’s performance was the last for votes. “For the next show, we’ll basically just be doing our last performance, but I still intend to give it my all.

“I’m grateful that I was able to be a part of this Idols journey.”

Two weeks ago the Top 3 Idols contestants – Yanga, Thato Makape (23) from the Northern Cape and Thando Mngomezulu (19) from Gauteng – jetted off to Dubai to record their singles.

Yanga described this four-day trip as an “amazing experience” and her first time overseas.

She shared that previous Idols winner, Paxton Fielies from Bishop Lavis, serves as

an inspiration to her.

“I’ve met Paxton twice. When we chat on WhatsApp she is often motivating and inspires me to give it my all.”

TygerBurger chatted to Paxton yesterday and she shared that Yanga possesses a very “vibrant soul with positive energy”.

“She is such a good singer. She has so much soul. I think it’s so important to keep an Idols contestant motivated because this competition is so tough and you can literally lose yourself. It’s very important to have that source of motivation in order to keep contestants going whenever they might feel down. I really feel honoured to be that source of motivation for Yanga.

“With both of us being young Idols contestants, I feel Yanga and I can relate on a lot of levels,” said Paxton.

ie Eersterivier-sokkerklub is bekroon as eersteligakampioen van die Noordelike Voorstede-sokkervereniging.

Hul oorwinning het vir hulle bevordering na 2019 se premierliga verseker nadat hulle vir die afgelope paar jaar in die eerste liga gespeel het.

Bradley Williams, voorsitter van die klub, sê dat die span uitsien na die uitdaging wat hul promosie na die premierliga gaan meebring.

“Ons is besig om stadig maar seker die sokkerligaleer te klim,” sê Williams.

“Ons het ’n span jong spelers wat saam met hul afrigters verskriklik hard werk.”

Na dié seisoen kry die spelers ’n welverdiende breek tot volgende jaar, wanneer hulle vroeg in Januarie weer hulle oefensessies gaan voortsit ter voorbereiding vir die seisoen wat in April Perchville de Klerk is gaan begin. aangewys as die senior “Die passie, toeklubspeler van die jaar. wyding en harde

Ons het ons doelwit binne drie jaar bereik en dus ons eie verwagtinge oortref,” sê Williams. ’n Belangrike fokus vir die klub is die ontwikkeling van jong spelers.
