Kuilies get a smash of
colour
More than 3000 people gathered on the De Kuilen Primary School sports fields recently to throw paint up in the air and shower themselves with colour. The Harcourts Prosperity Colour Run event took place at the school on Saturday 17 March. It was such fun to see how even adults “became like children again” when they did the countdown to throw the paint up in the air at 09:00. This was followed by a 5km fun run and lucky draws, with lucky winners going home with bicycles, a big-screen television, headphones, cricket sets, netball and rugby balls, a portable braai and cash prizes. TAXI ROUTE WARS: DRIVERS SEEK BLACKHEATH/MALIBU PERMITS
‘Invaders’ cause violence JAY-DEE CYSTER @jaydeecyster

isputes over taxi routes have gripped Blackheath, Eerste River and Melton Rose in recent months, with about 40 members of the Congress of Democratic Taxi Associations (Codeta) seeking permits to become members of the Blackheath/Malibu Taxi Association. Recent acts of intimidation of drivers and owners who are members of the Blackheath/ Malibu Taxi Association have been rife, with one driver slipping into a coma after being assaulted another almost losing an eye
and another being dragged from his taxi and assaulted while transporting children, says a member of the association, who has requested to remain anonymous. The member says the issue has been coming on for years, escalating in recent months. “Despite not being members of the Blackheath/Malibu association these ‘pirates’ (drivers from Codeta) have been driving the routes that have been set out for our association,” says the source, who relays that the main problems have been occurring on the Malibu to Bellville route. It is alleged that the problems started when two registered members of the Black-
heath/Malibu Taxi Association began recruiting drivers to join the association. According to Codeta chairperson, Vufumzi Miselo, there is a split within the Blackheath/Malibu Taxi Association as some members are recruiting drivers from outside the association to join. “Some members are recruiting while others are saying that outside members cannot join,” says Miselo. According to the anonymous source four groups, namely the Blackheath/Malibu Taxi Association, Bellville operators, the Melton Rose Taxi Association and the Eerste River Taxi Association, handed over a man-

date on Wednesday 14 March to the City of Cape Town asking that the route invasion situation be dealt with. Vernon Billet, secretary general of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), says he is of the opinion Law Enforcement agencies are not doing enough to prevent the violence which has resulted from the so-called route invasions. According to the source, the Blackheath/ Malibu Taxi Association cannot issue permits to another 40 drivers as too many members on the routes will affect the income of the current members.
