ONE MAN ARRESTED: HAWKS INVESTIGATE
Two cops killed THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo
N
ational police minister Bheki Cele visited the family of slain Kraaifontein police officer Sgt Mnakwazi Mdoko in Bloekombos on Tuesday 2 March. Mdoko (45) was shot and killed together with his colleague Const Mninawa Breakfast (28) in a suspected ambush while patrolling the area in the early hours of Sunday morning (28 February). The meeting was held behind closed doors, but Cele briefly addressed a large crowd outside the home afterwards. He assured them justice will be served and those involved will be brought to book. “We cannot let these killings take place any longer. Rest assured that we will solve it,” Cele says. Mdoko’s wife, Nozipho, says the minister’s visit was assuring that those responsi-
ble for her husband’s killing will not go free.“It is comforting to hear that he has interest in the case,” she says. The two have been together for nine years and got married in June last year. The widow describes her husband as a caring and humble man. “He was very friendly and full of love to his family and those around him.” His brother, Lamla Vumani says the killing of the two cops is inhumane. “The police should do everything in their power to make sure that justice is served,” he says. Cele also visited Breakfast’s family. Local organisation Kraaifontein Community Development Forum condemns the killing of the two officers. The organisation’s Louise Botha says the news came as a shock and she is disgusted by the crime. “We are calling on the community to provide police with necessary information that
will lead to the arrest of those involved,” Botha says. He says the organisation has the well-being of the families at heart and hopes that arrests are made soon. Kraaifontein police made a breakthrough in the case on Monday 1 March when they arrested a 32-year-old man in Khayelitsha who is suspected to have played a part in the killing of the two officers. Together with the Hawks’ national priority violent crimes team, crime intelligence officers and the K9 unit, the officers went on an intelligence-driven operation and arrested the suspect in Mandela Park. Provincial police spokesperson Col Andrè Traut, says Mdoko and Breakfast were ambushed while on patrol in Bloekombos and the vehicle they were driving in apparently came under fire. They have been with the station since 2018 and 2017 respectively. V To page 2.
