UWC: STUDENTS LAUNCH ‘EACH ONE FEED ONE’
Hungerbusting project NIELEN DE KLERK AND RAYLENE VAN WYK @nielendk

ive students are tackling their fellow classmates’ hunger problems one sandwich at a time. The group, all students at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), call their project “Each One Feed One”. The five students, Tiwonge Kondowe (from Belhar), Thokozani Matroos (Goodwood), Thaakirah Groenewald (Delft), Tamlyn Fortuin (Belhar) and Evans Sakyi Boadu (Belhar), started preparing and handing out meals to students in 2017. Kondowe says they started the project in an effort to help tackle the “hidden hunger” that students on campus are facing. Many live on what is known as a “water diet”, drinking water because they can’t afford a proper meal. “The aim of the initiative is to make life more comfortable and motivating for UWC students who cannot afford a decent meal,” she says. “It will also reduce the student tendency of dropping out of school due to hunger.” They were helping other students in some way or another before this, Matroos says, when they happened upon a study that changed everything. The study on food insecurity, by a student in the Economic Management Science Faculty, revealed how hungry their classmates really were. They were
so touched by this they decided to form an official group to tackle the issue. They set to work and raised funds from faculty members and fellow students. This helped them to feed 120 students at their first event. Each student received a sandwich, apple, juice, slices of watermelon and small chocolates. While many other students may be spending time socialising and engaging in various hobbies, this project sees the members of Each One Feed One buying ingredients and preparing food for their fellow students. But the looks on the recipients’ faces make everything worth it. “Our hearts beam at how grateful they are,” Groenewald says. Their biggest challenge remains getting the funding to feed all the students in need, the group says. “We have hopes to feed as many students as we can but funding is our biggest setback, but we remain faithful that our surrounding community will assist us,” Fortuin says. “Besides, how can one pursue the highest intellectual excellence in a state of hunger?” They hope to expand the initiative, hosting it more often and possibly establishing satellite branches at other universities.
