ard 25 councillor, Beverley van Reenen, has called for an end to gang violence following the death of fouryear-old Thea Lewis, who was killed when she was caught up in an alleged gang-related shooting at Cedar Court in Cedar Close, off Uitsig Avenue in Uitsig, Ravensmead. The incident occurred after 13:00 on Wednesday 18 April. The single bullet hit her in the chest. Councillor van Reenen says she is devastated that Thea’s innocent life has been cut short. “This is a tragedy that could have been prevented as these gang members are actually someone’s child who lives in the area. I will never accept that nobody knows that their child is a gang member or that they were unaware that their son or daughter has an illegal firearm in his or her possession,” she tells TygerBurger. “The shooting of our young children and innocent people in ward 25 and elsewhere in Cape Town, whether by a stray bullet, is unacceptable. It is overall a concern not only for me as a councillor, but also for the City of Cape Town in general. This clearly illustrate the dangers that exist when weapons are in the hands of the wrong and the young and/or in the hands of gangsters.” She believes not enough is being done by
government and police services to ensure that communities live a life that is free from any form of violence. “Furthermore, there exists no trust between residents and the SAPS as they themselves assist and aid gangsters in performing these illegal activities. Recently it was reported that during December 2017, three prominent Ravensmead SAPS members were arrested for alleged armed robbery. These are some of the challenges within the ward.” When asked how to bring an end to the war, Councillor van Reenen says that during her term she has tried several intervention strategies, including marches, community meetings, street meetings, park meetings, vigils and the installation of CCTV monitoring cameras. “However, these intervention strategies remain insufficient if families do not come to the fore, as crime is everybody’s responsibility and our communities must also play a role. They are the eyes of our communities and in certain instances they know who the perpetrators are as mothers, fathers, siblings, family members and neighbours. “I have on numerous occasions encouraged our communities to start and/or join a neighbourhood watch branch in the area or be the neighbourhood watch through their windows and report things that they see which are illegal.
