DELFT: EINDHOVEN TO BOAST 1100 NEW HOMES

New housing development in The Hague Phase 1 of a new housing development in The Hague is currently underway.

The event took place on the corner of Electra Street (previously known as Airbus Street) and Gotha Street.

It was attended by the City’s Mayco member for transport and urban development, Brett Herron, and the City’s Mayco member for Area Central, Siyabulela Mamkeli.

Approximately R148 million has been set aside for this project, which will be built over 18 months. Thousands of families will be housed.

onstruction on a new housing development in The Hague, Delft is currently underway.

The City of Cape Town held a sod-turning ceremony on Thursday 22 March, which marked the start of construction on The Hague Phase 2 and the Eindhoven housing project in Delft.

This project, which is located between Delft Main Road and Stellenbosch Arterial, forms part of the greater Delft Integrated Housing Project and includes The Hague Phase 1 and the Roosendal housing project.

The construction of Phase 1 is underway and will run concurrently with Phase 2.

There will be 1012 BNG houses, at an estimated cost of R126 million.

To date, 266 houses have already been handed over to beneficiaries.

The Roosendal housing project in Delft

has already been completed and has provided 288 beneficiaries with homes.

Herron says the City is very excited to be witnessing all the plans and hard work officials are transitioning into reality.

“A sod-turning is always a joyful occasion because it symbolises the first steps towards a new beginning for our beneficiaries.

“Our team is making every effort to ensure this project stays on track so we can bring our beneficiaries home.”

TB patients must stay the course With World Tuberculosis Day having taken place on Saturday 24 March, the City of Cape Town is encouraging TB patients to stay the course.

In a statement issued by the City’s Mayoral Committee member for safety and security and social services, JP Smith, he expresses his hope that advances in the treatment of TB will help more patients to stay the course and convince others to seek appropriate care.

According to the World Health Organisation, TB is the ninth leading cause of death worldwide despite the fact that it is both preventable and curable.

“In Cape Town there has been a decrease of nearly 24% in the number of reported TB cases in the last eight years, from 29 726 in 2010 to 22 681 in 2018. While this is good news, this incidence is still at an alarmingly high level,” says Smith.

In 2015, a new drug was introduced for the treatment of drug-resistant TB and in October last year a shorter treatment regimen of

nine to 12 months was introduced. “It is encouraging to note that patients receiving the new medication are responding to treatment better, and have improved their treatment outcomes. It is hoped that the shorter treatment duration means more patients on drug-resistant TB treatment will complete their treatment,” says Smith.

The diagnosing of TB depends on persons with symptoms presenting themselves at healthcare facilities; however, many people with active TB are asymptomatic in the early stages, resulting in them not seeking the appropriate healthcare. “People with undiagnosed, untreated and potentially infectious TB are frequently seen in health facilities. One person with infectious TB can infect another 10 to 15 people,” says Smith.

Symptoms indicating the presence of TB include a persistent cough for more than two weeks, unintended weight loss of more than 1.5kg per month, an ongoing fever and drenching night sweats. Furthermore, Smith encourages persons who have been in

“This project is located along a public transport corridor, which will make the area accessible to the residents. This factor is in keeping with some of the key priorities pursued by the Transport and Urban Development Authority, which aims to locate new developments around existing and planned public transport corridors and to partner with the private sector and other government departments in addressing the housing need in Cape Town,” says Herron.

Another challenge regarding TB is that one out of every 10 clients who start on treatment do not complete the full six months (for drug-sensitive TB). “Even more are not completing their full course of drug-resistant TB treatment, which is longer and needs different drugs to those used for drug-sensitive TB,” says Smith. He says treatment adherence is difficult for patients due to the long duration of treatment, but recently there has been progress made in addressing these challenges. Caregivers are encouraged to bring all children younger than five years of age to their nearest clinic to be screened if they are in close contact with an adult with TB. Healthy children will receive preventative medication (prophylaxis), while children who are unwell will be started on TB treatment if necessary.

A junior bellydancing troupe from the Dance Descendants studio in Bothasig competed in the regional qualifiers for the Western Cape round of World of Dance South Africa held at Durbanville High School on Saturday 10 March.

The dancers, coached by Mandy Lapperts, placed in the top two in their category and will compete in the finals taking place at the Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg in May. They also won an additional award for best costume overall.

The finalists competing in Johannesburg will stand a chance to represent South Africa at the World of Dance world finals in Los Angeles, USA later this year.

Kids’ holiday programme

Mayco members Brett Herron and Siyabulela Mamkeli say they are looking forward to this new development which is expected to take 18 months to complete.

The Eerste River Library will be hosting a school holiday programme alongside the Recreation and Parks Department at the Eerste River Multipurpose Centre from Tuesday 3 to Friday 6 April: Tuesday 3 April – Easter storytime (10:00 to 11:00); Wednesday 4 April – Integrated storytelling (at Hillcrest Civic Centre, 10:00 to 11:00); Thursday 5 April – Board games (10:00 to 11:00); Friday 6 April – Movie morning (10:00 to 12:00).

resident of Ravensmead is striving to make a difference in the community by creating music for aspiring artists.

Monray Lopes (31), a former learner at Ravensmead High School, tells TygerBurger that while he was at school he was on a path where he could either destruct or achieve.

“I chose to achieve and then became head boy of the school. I noticed that I was in a more favourable position.”

After working in the retail sector for just under five years, he went on to obtain his BSc in Environmental and Water Science at the University of the Western Cape.

However, Lopes says he has struggled to find employment since obtaining this degree.

This led to him getting more involved in the community and aiming to make a difference.

“Our youth are being drawn into gang-related activities and our schools and education system are suffering because of it. Our youth are losing interest in education, and as an entertainment company (7493 Entertainment) we are trying to implement projects to draw the youth back into schools.

We also encourage young entrepreneurs to start their own businesses and create platforms for them to trade from.

“I piloted an arts and culture project last year in which I recorded disadvantaged musicians and youngsters at no cost to them to keep them free from a troubled lifestyle.

I started marketing and built a brand for the community. I also created a platform titled the Ravensmead Hip Hop Indaba for these artists to perform on and I’m branching out to do a talent search in our schools in April,” says Lopes.

Celebrity cook-off winner announced: Parow Centre held its 8th annual Celebrity Cook-Off Challenge on Saturday 24 March at the centre.

Patricia Minnaar from Ravensmead was the winner and received a cheque to the value of R10 000. With her are the celebrity singing sensations Paxton Fielies from Bishop Lavis and Craig Lucas from Elsies River.

ard 50 councillor Franchesca Walker had the children of Leonsdale entertained on Human Rights Day, Wednesday 21 March, with music, games and food at the Leonsdale Community Hall.

With the strong presence of police and Law Enforcement, the children played peacefully and safely.

Speakers at the event included community safety MEC Dan Plato, Gavin Maggot from the Department of Justice, motivational speaker Cole Davids, and Christine Botha from the Centre for Constitutional Rights.

Walker says she was very happy with the outcome of the event and the effort put into the day. She says she feels the day was important to commemorate in the area because of the high rate of gangsterism and people who may be living in fear on a day-today basis.

“The aim of this day was to bring back that pride in our rights. People came out to attend and be part of the day. They could

relate to what the guest speakers spoke about and took it to heart. Our people need motivation and a constant reminder that they are not alone in areas like these that sometimes may seem forgotten.

“We have so much violence and criminal activity in these areas. To see our people celebrate and our children being free to play and their talents showcased was awesome to witness.”

Sentene Cloete, a community worker in the area, describes the day as something the community needed to uplift everyone’s spirits.

“We had so much fun today (Wednesday 21 March). As a community worker in the area, it was so good to see ‘my’ children having so much fun and just being children.

They were free and not up to mischief.”

Resident Carlo Oliver was spotted teaching the children how to play table-top game, kerim. He told TygerBurger it was good to see so many children intrigued by the game.

“It’s important to keep our children busy with things they can enjoy. The majority of them came to me to ask me to teach them to play the game.”

For many boys, soccer is their favourite sport. These boys were spotted playing in the hall’s parking area.

Dié projek ontdek en ontwikkel sangtalent D

ie Tygerfest, Blue Bus Ministries en Hoërskool Hindle is besig om leerders se sangtalent in Delft te help ontdek en te ontwikkel. Daar word beplan om die kompetisie later ook uit te brei na ander gebiede in die Tyger-area.

In die eerste ronde van hierdie groot projek het twee beoordelaars oudisies gehou by elk van die 21 skole wat deelgeneem het.

Hulle het 50 laer- en hoërskoolleerders gekies om deel te neem aan die tweede ronde.

Op 26 tot 28 Maart vind werksessies plaas, waar dié leerders musieklesse en wenke oor optredes sal ontvang, en saam in ’n koor afgerig sal word. Die laaste twaalf finaliste word ook hier aangewys.

Die pryswennerskonsert is op 22 April om 15:00 by die Hugo Lambrechts-musieksentrum in Parow. Saam met die finaliste tree ook bekende gaskunstenaars op, soos Kyle Seconna en twee orkeste van Hugo Lambrechts. Die seremoniemeester is die uitstekende Gillian Arendse.

NPOs to benefit from Act for Change

A

s a means of helping welfare organisations stay afloat in these trying economic times, the Shoprite Group has launched a discount store card that will give qualifying registered non-profit organisations a 5% discount when shopping at participating stores.

As of Sunday 1 April, South Africa’s value-added tax will increase by one percentage point to 15%.

In light of this increase the Shoprite Group has launched the Act for Change card, which will allow for a 5% discount across outlets from the Shoprite Group.

The Act for Change card can be used any Shoprite, Checkers, Checkers Hyper, Usave, House & Home and OK Furniture store.

The NPOs will have 30 days in which to pay with no interest, with additional benefits being no administration, annual or renewal fees.

“Shoprite is already known for its low prices. With the 5% discount, our local Shoprite has become an even more attractive option from which to get supplies for our spaza shop,” says Sinah George, manager of Neighbourhood Old Age Homes (NOAH) in Khayelitsha. The spaza shop, run by elderly residents from Khayelitsha, is one of the social enterprises used by NOAH to assist people dependent on state pensions in the greater Cape Town area.

A further benefit of the Act for Change card is greater peace of mind for donors who, by paying donations directly onto the card, will ensure their money is spent only on items that can be bought from Shoprite and subsidiaries.

The application process for the card is only open to registered NPOs. Hilton Davids from the Vlottenburg Community Organisation (VCO) in Wesbank, which supports, feeds and provides an aftercare programme for six to 18-year-olds, says he would most definitely recommend the card to other organisations.

“It can serve as a savings tool for organisations that put money on the card every month for use when there’s an urgent, unexpected need or special event,” he explains.

Like NOAH, VCO participated in the pilot roll-out of the Act for Change card in the Western Cape.

It’s Safari marathon time The annual Safari half marathon in partnership with Liqui-Fruit will once again take place on Tuesday 1 May in the picturesque town of Wellington.

The road running and walking event, which includes a 5km fun run, a 10km race and a 21.1km half marathon, will start and finish at Huguenot High School.

A substantial amount of prize money will be up for grabs, with the male and female winners of the 21.1km each receiving R7500. All early entrants will receive a goodie bag when collecting their race number at one of the Sportsmans Warehouse collection points or at Huguenot High School in Wellington. The official benefiting charity for 2018 is House Andrew Murray Child and Youth Care Centre, which is celebrating their 120th anniversary. Thousands come out for Tyger Run/Walk

Thousands of people came out to participate in the Tyger Run/Walk 2018 at TygerValley Shopping Centre on Wednesday 21 March. Participants took part in the 21.1km, 10km and 5km races. TygerBurger’s Tarryn-Leigh Solomons went out to snap some pics.

Zara Nicholson (from Goodwood) completed the 10km race. She is pictured with five-year-old Skylah Solomons who participated in her first 5km run.

Felicity Messias (Ravensmead), Trunette Stuurman (all the way from Oudtshoorn) and Erica Roberts (Kuils River) added some colour to the occasion and made it a morning of fun.

Janet Strumpher (from Brackenfell) and Kerry Howard (from Table View) embraced the fresh breeze during the run.

Audrick Brinkhuys (Kuils River), Nicole Lykert (Bellville), Mondray Stanfliet (Kuils River), Lynne Reagon (Wynberg) and Duane Niegaardt (Kuils River) took part in the 10km race. The group said they got their morning off to a good start.

2. Die teikenouderdom van jeug wat na hierdie programme uitgenooi word, is tussen 14 en 20 jaar oud. Jeug uit ander ouderdomsgroepe word nie uitgesluit nie, maar daar word voorkeur gegee aan hierdie betrokke ouderdomskategorie.

3. Die organisasie moet ’n voltooide en getekende vrywaringsvorm vir elke kind/jeugdeelnemer hê by elke dag van die program (gebruik slegs die Departement se vorm) Die Departement kan vra dat deelnemers aan verdere veiligheidsbevorderingsaktiwiteite deelneem. Organisasies wat daarin belangstel om deel te neem aan veiligheidsbevorderingsaktiwiteite tydens die Junie/Julie en Desember skoolvakansie moet ’n aansoek op die voorgeskrewe aansoekvorm voltooi.

Ladies stretch their legs at Spar Women’s Race Sunday 25 March got off to a chilly start for the Spar Women’s Race in Bellville.

Tarryn-Leigh Solomons of TygerBurger caught up with a few ladies before the race.

The race officially kicked off at 07:00 in front of the Bellville Stadium.

Beverley and Natasha Ferrirah from Belhar took advantage of the morning to have some mother-daughter bonding time.

Learners join hands to clean canal TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07

L

earners from Goodwood College, Valhalla Primary and De Waveren Primary joined hands in cleaning the Elsies River canal on Friday 23 March.

This was done in collaboration with GrandWest, representatives of the World Wildlife Fund and City of Cape Town departments responsible for water demand, environmental education and invasive species.

The event was in honour of World Water Day which was celebrated on Thursday 22 March.

The day was aimed at creating greater awareness of the steps cities can take to preserve scarce water resources.

The 2018 theme, Nature for Water, explores ways in which to restore nature’s delicate environmental balance by reducing pollution that clogs waterways and various other initiatives.

Volunteers assisted with clearing litter and invasive species from the section of the river that flows past GrandWest.

General manager of GrandWest, Mervyn Naidoo, says the drought has taught the public to never take water for granted. “We obviously have no control over rainfall, but we can ensure that the natural resources we do have are protected. By removing pollutants and water-guzzling invasive plants, and by planting trees and indigenous vegetation to bring the natural balance back to our rivers, lakes and wetlands, we will be handing back control to nature.

“Nature really does know best so we encourage every Capetonian to do their bit to restore their area to its natural state.”

Her Grade 7 teacher, Denise Wilkinson, said this was an important day to teach the children not to litter and the importance of looking after their environment. “This was a very important lesson for our children. They can now pass the message on to their friends.”

ntries are open for this year’s Sanlam Cape Town Marathon.

Africa’s “iconic city marathon” has made enormous strides since its relaunch in 2014. It was awarded Gold Label status by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in 2017, making it the first IAAF Gold Label status city marathon on the continent, and in that same year it won the coveted Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) Green Award.

Race director Janet Welham notes that the Gold Label status is a drawcard for elite athletes from around the world.

“Going for gold is paramount in keeping

the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon as the ‘must run’ event in Africa,” she says.

The event attracted more than 22 500 runners from 76 countries last year, including 46 elite runners. Organisers are hoping that this year’s event will draw over 28 000 entries across all events. “We strive to not only put together an internationally recognised event, but also protect our environment and have a positive impact on the City of Cape Town,” says race ambassador Elana van ZylMeyer. The Cape Town Marathon achieved zero waste to landfill last year and at the same time was a certified climate-neutral event, and with the help of its organisers, participants and charities it intends to live

up the award again this year. The event takes place over the weekend of 22 to 23 September. Participants are encouraged to take up the challenge and get involved in the Run4Change legacy programme, by taking the pledge to #RunGreen; #Run4Peace and #Run4aCause. Thanks to the massive effort made by runners who took the pledge last year, waste was reduced by over 25% per runner, with “chuckzones” and an onsite waste-sorting facility contributing to this impressive achievement. Almost three tons of recyclable waste (including paper, glass and various forms of plastic) were collected, while 1.4 tons of non-recyclable solids (including organic waste and general waste)

were sent to the New Horizon Energy Plant for conversion into renewable energy sources such as biomethane and gas.

This year Van Zyl-Meyer encourages all participants to keep up the good work and to offset their carbon footprint incurred by transport by air or car by supporting South African charities like Wonderbag, Reliance Compost and the Basa Magogo projects.

The weekend-long running festival begins on 22 September with two Peace Trail Runs (22km and 12km) and a 5km Peace Run/ Walk. There’s a 10km Peace Run on 23 September, followed by the classic 42.2km marathon.

T

he Western Province A baseball team will travel to Durban this week with no fewer than nine national players in their squad as the defending champions of the national interprovincial championships from 4 to 7 April.

The Bellville Tygers, Bothasig and Athlone A’s are the backbone of the team.

The preparation for the tournament has not been ideal due to the drought that halted club matches two months ago.

“The season’s remaining matches were cancelled in January due to the drought, so our players lack some game time but we

make no excuses. Our Western Province A and B teams had a couple of matches against each other.

“Our pitchers need time on the mound and our batters need that pressure situation that we will experience in Durban. Having said that, all things are well on track and we are confident in our ability to successfully defend our title,” says Western Province and Bellville Tygers assistant coach, Kevin Leak.

Leak is working side by side with head coach Alan Phillips, also from the Tygers, to bring out the best in the team.

The experience and talent in the team are second to none and this has always been the

case with Western Province baseball at national level. Having six national pitchers is something that will leave the other provinces restless.

Carl Michaels, Lloyd Stevens, Dean Jacobs, Cameron Fortuin (u.23), Jarred Elario and Darren Smith are the men who will take the mound as national pitchers.

Jonathan Phillips, who is one of the very best on third base, is another national player with plenty of experience playing overseas as well, and his mere presence will bring calmness to the team. Benjamin Smith (centre field) and Kyle Botha (catcher) are the other two national players.

Solomon Ackah from Eerste River placed third in the live men’s bodybuilding under 80kg division on Saturday night at the Physical Culture Association (PCA) Western Province Conrad Nagel Xtreme Classic Bodybuilding and Fitness Show held in Durbanville. Matthew Parker from Simon’s Town was crowned the overall men’s bodybuilding champion.
