GREGORY CARELSE: FAMILY, FRIENDS REMEMBER SLAIN ACTIVIST
Paying tribute to Kallie TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07
T
he 51-year-old wife of slain Gregory “Kallie” Carelse says not only was he a crime-fighting hero in Bishop Lavis, but he was also an “amazing, caring, dedicated, loving and respectful husband and father” to their six children. TygerBurger met the family last week Friday for an interview to pay tribute to a man many had grown to love and respect. Due to his intense involvement in crime fighting, his wife requested that the publication protect the identities of the family members. The couple celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary this year. “I’ve known
HALAAL
Gregory since I was 15 years old, then we got married when I turned 18.” She describes her husband as one who was always passionate about the safety of the community and who was not scared of confronting anyone. “He was really serious about fighting crime. Gregory was the type of person who was very straightforward and said a thing like it is, no matter who you are. “He never used to discuss things that he was investigating, such as crime and who was involved in it. Gregory always said he did not want us to have to get involved and always aimed to protect our family.” His wife says he had been a reservist for the Bishop Lavis police for about 30 years. “He first started as a reservist at Bellville Po-

lice Station for two years then moved to Bishop Lavis. He was also employed as a chief security officer for the Western Cape Department of Community Safety.” She said their children had always expressed concern at the fact that Carelse was involved in crime fighting, but she would then remind them that it was his passion and part of his job. “People in the community were very fond of my husband and always came to inform him of things happening in the area. His death is also a loss for our community.” One of his children shared with TygerBurger that their dad was very strict, but also very caring and loving. “When we had problems, then we would speak to our dad. He
fought very hard for the community and to make it safe, but that also took our father away from us.” The provincial department of community safety hosted a memorial service for Carelse last week, honouring his contribution to the department and the “fighter” he was. Minister Dan Plato, told TygerBurger he had a lot of respect for Carelse. “This is a very difficult time for us as a department to realise that we won’t see ‘Kallie’ again.” One of his colleagues, Daniel Viljoen, who is a security officer at the department, said he had worked with Carelse for 32 years. “He was one of my closest friends and a father to many. I will miss him so much.”
