BONTEHEUWEL: NEW HOUSING PROJECT TO ACCOMMODATE 360 FAMILIES
Making Bonteheuwel better TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07
P
lanning for a new housing project in Bonteheuwel is currently underway. The project is set to accommodate 360 families. Areas to be receiving the new houses include Jakkalsvlei Laan, Ivory Street and Rambo Way. Ward 50 councillor Angus McKenzie has
described this as an exciting time because the last housing development in the area happened 20 years ago. He conducted a site inspection in these areas on Tuesday 13 March, accompanied by consultants, project managers and City officials. “I felt an immense sense of pride visiting these sites knowing that soon many families will be swopping a backyard dwelling for house they can call home. The sites will see 360 homes built for people of Bonteheuwel
who appear on the waiting list.” He tells TygerBurger it is important to also bear in mind that Bonteheuwel has a housing waiting list of 3500 people. He further states that it is important for residents to know that he, as ward councillor, does not allocate the houses to the residents. “Houses are allocated according to the housing policy. I have no involvement in the selection process. Residents who are on the waiting list must please make sure that their details
are updated.” Public participation and public meeting processes, which will inform the community of the plans and way forward, are set to commence towards the end of April, but an exact date is yet to be determined. “Once this process is complete, a skills audit will be conducted in the area to ensure that as far as possible locally skilled individuals are involved in the project.” V To page 2.
