ELSIES RIVER HIGH SCHOOL: PRINCIPAL RETIRING

Farewell Mr Brydon TARRYN-LEIGH SOLOMONS @tarryns07

A

fter 44 years of teaching at Elsies River High School, Leslie Brydon, better known as Mr Brydon, is spending his last few days at the school as principal. In an interview with TygerBurger Brydon (65) said the term “retirement” and the feeling thereof has not hit him yet. “I’m still going to be here until the end of the month. I’ve been so busy that the thought of me retiring has not sunk in yet. I have not done any packing yet. It’s the furthest thing from my mind.” Brydon has been at the school for 44 years, starting as a teacher for 34 years. He has spent the last 10 years as principal. Subjects he taught over the years include Accounting, Business Economics, Economics and Typing which he said was done many years ago. When asked about which values he thought were important to implement at the start of his tenure as principal, Brydon explained: “Discipline, honesty, integrity, pride and respect were the primary things I thought to focus on for our learners. It all starts with respect. If you don’t respect yourself, you won’t respect others. When I speak of pride, I mean learners showing that they are proud to wear their uniform and to take pride in their school. “I had a challenge in the beginning where learners had their nicknames written on their bags and writing with Tipp-Ex, but we were able to overcome that and now nicknames and writings on bags are not permitted.” He said the school has always had its own culture. “We basically just reinforced certain things and had to introduce a culture of learning. This school is a beacon of hope in an area which is so plagued with crime. Changes we implemented were an effort to make learners become proud of where they come from.” Forty-four years later and Brydon said he feels like he never worked a day in his life

due to his passion for teaching. “Over the years, I think I taught about 8000 to 9000 learners in total, considering the classes I had. I’ve always been passionate about teaching and helping and listening to people.” He said 2017 was the last year in which he had a class and he spent 2018 in the office. “I’m very proud to say I’m a part of this school and that I spent my career here. My aim has always been to create a family atmosphere. “With our learners coming from gang-in-

fested areas around the school, we’ve always aimed to create a place where learners feel secure at school. My motivation (to the learners) has always been ‘it’s not where you start; it’s all about where you are going’. “What gives me the greatest pleasure is when I bump into past pupils outside of school who have achieved something in life.” Brydon said he intends to spend his free time doing his favourite hobby: “I love gardening so I’m going to spend a lot of time gardening and being with my family. some travelling is for consideration, but despite me being away from the school, I intend to always avail myself if I’m needed to assist with classes. “I’d also like to get involved in the community and help where I can. Life is about giving, that’s how I grew up,” said Brydon. In closing off the interview, he said: “Thank you to my wife and children for supporting me throughout the years. Thank you to the educators and our learners who have made me proud to be part of Elsies River High School.”
