28-year-old Elsies River resident tells TygerBurger his goal for the next two years is to influence children of the community through his knowledge of music and by allowing them to experience what an orchestra is. Marvin Weavers, who is a youth development and education coordinator at the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, has described growing up in a gang-ridden area as “difficult”. He says high school was the
most challenging for him, as the temptation of drugs and following the wrong path was at its peak. He fought against the temptation, however, as he says he wanted a different outcome. “It was really hard growing up in Elsies, especially at high school. The influence of fellow learners wanting you to stay out of school and try and use drugs was there. I never gave in to any of that and I have my mother and high school teachers to thank for the guidance. My mother always told me to get friends who are better than me, or in a better living condition.” Marvin says he then joined the Cape Town
Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and the members ended up being his friends. “My living condition was much different to theirs, so I would always want to stay over at a friend’s house for the weekend. It was a different world. I didn’t have to worry about gunshots, didn’t have to worry about someone asking me to go buy weed or do things that weren’t right. “The one challenge I had was that my mother is a single mother so I had to work weekends in order to pay for my music lessons. I couldn’t expect my mom to still have that extra pressure on her. She’s been my
biggest support and role model,” he says. Now that he has the knowledge of the orchestra, Weavers says he wants to bring that to the community. He therefore approached Matroosfontein Primary School and Elsbury Primary School to have the learners of the school exposed to an orchestra. As such, learners were able to escape the norm when the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra gave the learners a free show on Wednesday 18 April at the Matroosfontein Civic Centre.
