Is it a bird, is it a plane? An Edge 540 model aeroplane flies side by side with a sparrowhawk during an event held this past weekend by the Cape Radio Flyers’ Club, originally hailing from Rietvlei, Milnerton. The club is now housed near Melkbos on a private farm. PHOTO: COLIN BROWN
DIS-CHEM: WORKERS PROTEST
Unrest at Canal Walk RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj
V
isitors to the Canal Walk Shopping Centre were met with more than just the friendly smiles of sales assistants recently, but also the angry shouts and disgruntled faces of a small group of protestors inside the building. The protestors, who according to media reports are employed by Dis-Chem, clashed with members of the Public Order Police on
Wednesday last week when they gathered in front of the pharmacy, demanding higher salaries. A video posted on Facebook on Wednesday afternoon shows members of the police trying to disperse the crowd by means of batons and shields. The video also shows objects being thrown at police while they are trying to disperse the crowd. Captain Frederick van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, saying four men had been taken into

custody as a result of the clash. He said the group, aged 31, 34, 36 and 41 respectively, are being charged with contravening the regulation of a court interdict, public violence, malicious damage to property and assault. Vanessa Herbst, spokesperson for Canal Walk, also confirmed what they call an illegal protest, outside Dis-Chem. “This was not a sanctioned protest. “Centre management can also confirm that Law Enforcement officers were on site
and requested the protesters to leave. “While most left peacefully, there were a number of protesters that resisted moving, but were escorted from the premises and the remaining crowd was dispersed. “This was done in line with the police’s appropriate safety and security protocols. “We can assure our customers and tenants that their safety and security is of utmost importance to us,” Herbst said. TygerBurger is still awaiting a response from Dis-Chem.
