GUY FAWKES: MUCH QUIETER THAN PREVIOUS YEARS

No ‘big bang’ this year RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj This year’s Guy Fawkes Day went by much more peacefully than usual.

The somewhat unusual quietness was ascribed to two things – the bad weather and the day of the week.

Guy Fawkes, which is celebrated on 5 November annually, fell on a Monday this year.

“The event was so quiet this year. I do not have the numbers, but it was significantly

less than previous years.

“I am speculating but it may have something to do with the fact that the last three years Guy Fawkes fell on a weekend and this year it was a Monday,” Nicky Rheeder, ward councillor, told TygerBurger last week.

She said thankfully this year there were no real serious incidents reported to the authorities. “One child who got a big fright being close to a loud firework was checked out by medics, but barring a small mark on her ear she was just fine.”

Laura Outhet, spokesperson for the Table View Neighbourhood Watch who helped with patrols, told TygerBurger that they are happy to report that there were “no incidents of value”.

“There was a small crowd. Most left when the weather turned bad,” Outhet said.

Last year the festivities were also dampened by strong gusts (“Gusts hamper Guy Fawkes”, 8/11/17). The event had to be cut short at around 20:15 due to the strong southeasterly wind with about 1000 people on the

beachfront.

Gary le Roux, chairperson of the Parklands Neighbourhood Watch (PNW) who patrolled the Parklands area during this year’s celebrations, said no incidents were reported in their neck of the woods either.

“PNW patrolled our area of Parklands and Sunningdale while the fireworks were happening on the beachfront. In our area, everything was quiet and no complaints were logged with PNW. V To page 3.

Plato announces Mayco DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

hree local ward councillors in the northern suburbs of Cape Town will serve on re-elected mayor Dan Plato’s Mayoral Committee (Mayco), as announced on Sunday.

They are Brackenfell and Kuils River ward councillor Marian Nieuwoudt, Kraaifontein and Brackenfell ward councillor Grant Twigg, and Kuils River councillor Malusi Booi. Twigg and Booi are also the subcouncil chairpersons for subcouncils 2 and 21.

Nieuwoudt, who also served on Plato’s former Mayco, was appointed as the new Mayco member for finance.

She will stay on as ward councillor in Brackenfell, but will be assisted in the ward by proportional councillor Annelise van Zyl. “I believe the new committee to be an effective and experienced team, with young blood bringing new ideas and initiatives.

The mayor is clearly taking the lead with goal-oriented expectations being spelled out. We are united in our pursuit to better service delivery,” Nieuwoudt says.

Twigg is the new Mayco member for Area North and Booi the new Mayco member for Area Central.

“Going ahead it will be our focus to see

how we can improve on service delivery in our various communities, even if this means thinking out of the box,” says Twigg.

James Vos, a previous ward councillor in Edgemead and Bothasig, previous Mayco member for Helen Zille and most recently the DA shadow minister for tourism in the Western Cape, was appointed the new Mayco member for assets and facilities.

Vos says this appointment comes at a time of increasing public awareness of the political affairs of the City of Cape Town.

“It is therefore an opportunity to build the City’s reputation as a well-managed city where residents should feel that the DA is making a difference,” he said in a communiqué to TygerBurger.

“My portfolio focuses on tourism, events and economic development. It has the potential to ensure that Cape Town remains a destination of choice in Africa and worldwide, as far as tourism and trade is concerned.

“We have a diverse economy that keeps unemployment rates low, and I will continue to build on this success by working with industry and communities to invest in projects and programmes that will drive this

issue,” Vos said.

Plato says this new united, diverse and energised Mayoral Committee will take the city and its residents forward.

“The members I have chosen to serve on this committee have demonstrated their ability to carry out their duties with excellence, their commitment to work together as a united council, and their passion to serve the people of this city,” he said in a statement.

Plato stated that residents deserve a well-run and corruption-free administration geared towards efficient service delivery. He also added that the organisational development and transformation plan (ODT) would be reviewed, resulting in a different structure.

D

espite being diagnosed with cancer, a local radio host and community worker says he refuses to allow the disease to get him down.

The exceptionally busy Ian Ward, founder, managing director and breakfast host of One FM 94.0, who also serves as an auxiliary Law Enforcement officer and neighbourhood watch member, was diagnosed with stage 3B lung cancer recently.

To help him and his family cover the exorbitant costs, funds are currently being raised with the help of the donationsbased crowdfunding platform, BackaBuddy. The money, largely donated by members of the public, will cover his treatment only, Ward says, and not his living expenses.

The estimated cost of the therapy he will require will run into the thousands, he told TygerBurger during a one-on-one interview on Saturday morning.

Ward (42) was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2013, but managed to win this battle having undergone chemotherapy.

He lived a perfectly normal life with his family in Table View up until a month ago when he had to go for his five-year routine check-up.

Table View police are investigating a business robbery following an attack at a convenience store in the area over the weekend.

According to Captain Adriana Chandler, police spokesperson, four men entered the store in Merlot Road, Table View shortly after 20:00 on Sunday, pretending to be customers.

“One of the men presented a firearm, and the others started to order the employees around. Within a few minutes the four fled with an undisclosed amount of cash in a vehicle with no registration number,” Chandler says. No-one was injured during the robbery.

Stunning ceramics on display T

he full collection of traditional and modern ceramics in the Corobrik National Ceramics Biennale is now available for public viewing.

The exhibition was opened at the Rust-enVrede Gallery and Clay Museum in Durbanville this past Sunday.

This year, the selected pieces were judged by the British celebrity ceramicist, Kate Malone, recognisable from her role as an expert judge on the BBC series The Great Pottery Throw Down, according to a media release.

Malone chose the winner for the Corobrik Award, a highly sought-after prize given to the creator of the exhibition’s best piece.

This Premier Award was presented to Paul de Jongh for his large platter titled “Koi Playing” along with a prize of R15 000.

“South Africa has a long tradition of preserving historical narrative, and reflecting cultural heritage, through the beautiful medium of ceramic arts,” says Musa Shangase,

The Corobrik Collection was established in 1977 and five years later Corobrik assumed sponsorship of Ceramics Southern Africa. The partnership worked well and, in 1996, a decision was made to form a trust between the two organisations, with Corobrik providing funds that allowed for the acquisition of new ceramic pieces every two years.

A decade later, Corobrik, Ceramics Southern Africa (SA) and the Pretoria Art Museum signed a memorandum of understanding that strengthened the existing partnership, allowing for the housing of the Corobrik Collection at the prestigious museum.

The Corobrik Collection has since grown to almost 300 exquisite clay pieces, with between 100 and 200 displayed at any one time in special glass casings at the museum, according to the media release.

The Corobrik National Ceramics Biennale – which alternates between the Western Cape and Gauteng – gives the public a rare glimpse of the entire collection, including any new pieces that have been acquired.

To ensure the artwork displayed is always a true reflection of the ever-changing society, the trustees visit various rural areas countrywide where they uncover work by highly talented traditional potters.

“Many of South Africa’s leading ceramic artists have had their first exposure to the public through the Ceramics SA national exhibitions and the Corobrik Collection,” says Dr Ralph Johnson of Ceramics SA. “This is a historic collection, the only one of its kind in South Africa, and features the best ceramics from all parts of the country, including the very significant contribution made by the rural potters over the past 48 years. The Corobrik National Ceramics Biennale exhibition, organised by Ceramics SA Western Cape, forms part of Ceramics Month in Cape Town, which includes several events and activities celebrating the artistic medium. This event welcomes ceramic artists from across South Africa to enter their work for possible selection into the exhibition.

Alongside the Corobrik National Ceramics Biennale will be the fun Curious Creatures ceramic sculpture garden, as well as a brick art installation which will be erected by the acclaimed land artist and sculptor, Strijdom van der Merwe. Visitors to Rust-enVrede on Saturday 1 December will also enjoy the Spot Market, a curated pottery market with live music, food trucks, and clay play for the children. The exhibition runs from 11 November to 4 December.

South Africans get into Black Friday Research shows that the Black Friday phenomenon has grown faster in South Africa than any other country in the world.

Black Friday, a retail promotion that takes place on the last Friday of November after the American Thanksgiving holiday, originated in America in the 1950s.

Last year, PriceCheck saw three times the number of daily visits to its online shopping comparison website on Black Friday, and twice the number on Cyber Monday, compared to its 2017 average. In addition, these visits were on average 30% longer than the 2017 average duration.

This year is likely to surpass that, with PayPal predicting that South Africans’ online shopping spend will top R53bn by the end of 2018, up from R37.1bn in 2017.

But as the South African online shopping market grows, providing more to choose from, shoppers should put a game plan in place to ensure they get the best deals from the most reliable and secure retailers.

Take note of the delivery and return details. Will you get the purchase when you need it, and if you need to return it, will you end up paying more on delivery costs? . Look out for hidden costs or additional purchases you might need to make. . Compare deals: similar deals might be packaged slightly differently, so make sure you are comparing apples with apples. . Only buy from reputable retailers so you can be sure you will receive authentic products.

everal young people who aspire to join the South African Air Force (SAAF) one day received medals recently for completing a two-year Youth Development Programme.

The programme is run by the SAAF and consists of two legs, namely the Young Falcons and the Aero Tech Cadets. The areas focus on aviation and military activities.

Children can join the programme as from Grade 10 onwards and must have Mathematics, Science and English as subjects.

SAAF spokesperson, Major Patrick Paulse, told TygerBurger that the majority of the children who take part in the programme come from previously disadvantaged areas. He says on completion of their schooling and with the help of the programme, the youngsters can decide on which specific field within the Air Force they want to join, should they choose to join the SAAF. Paulse also says the programme has so far been a huge success as it teaches discipline and respect to young people who aspire to be pilots, air traffic controllers, navigators or engineers.

At last week’s Wings Parade held at the Ysterplaat Air Force Base (AFB) the youth received their medals for completing the programme. A total of 27 Young Falcons and 13 Aero Tech Cadets from the seniors, or advanced groups, received wings.

In his speech, Colonel Carl Moatshe, officer commanding Ysterplaat AFB, said the youth of South Africa today find themselves in an ever-changing environment and that this environment has many challenges, including the constant change in technology, social challenges and a high rate of unemployment, to mention a few.

“AFB Ysterplaat creates confidence to face these challenges through this Youth Development Programme.

“In the SAAF our base prides itself on being the only one that has a unique programme regarding youth development,” he said.

He said the programme aims to help the cadets become mindful students with a keen interest in making a wonderful career within the Air Force. “It grows an individual into a responsible person, and it exposes them to the aviation fraternity,” Moatshe said.

Help give kids a merry Xmas There is still time to donate much-needed items for Amatum’s annual Christmas party.

On Saturday 1 December, the children from Klipheuwel will be receiving gift boxes from Amatum, a charity organisation in Durbanville.

Amatum is part of Lewende Woord Durbanville and its mission is to “provide as many children and adults [as possible] with tools that will help them to make good choices and which will assist children to grow into responsible adults by empowering and developing them, one by one”.

According to Amatum’s founder, Amor Adendorff, they would like to spoil the children this Christmas by putting together gift bags for them, containing under-

wear, lunchboxes, water bottles, T-shirts, etc.

They are looking for donations of the following items: backpacks, toothbrushes and toothpaste, facecloths, body soap, children’s Bibles, underwear for girls and boys, cooldrink and ingredients for boerewors rolls.

All the items or donations should be handed over by 16 November to be packed into shoeboxes. One of the drop-off points is the Wellness Centre, situated at units 9 and 10, Milano complex, 16 Hyacinth Road, Durbanville.

Woodbridge visits ostrich ranch L

earners at Woodbridge Primary School in Milnerton recently had the opportunity to get up close and personal with some ostriches.

The Grade R class at the school visited the Cape Town Ostrich Ranch where they got to learn all about the birds with the tallest necks and longest legs.

Cheryl Swart says on behalf of the school that a trip to the farm is well worth it for families or schools.

Neluka Jayakody, Celia Smith and René Bruwer, the three Grade R teachers who accompanied the kids, all agree that the children loved the outing, says Swart.

“They were able to feed the giant birds, sit

on them and stand on their eggs, as well as learn a number of facts about these unique African creatures.

“There are other animals and birds to be seen as well. The cheetahs were firm favourites, as it was very exciting to see the two cheetah brothers, Meru and Mara, being fed.

The emus also attracted admiration, but our patriotic kids were quick to point out that they are not nearly as big as the ostriches,” says Swart.

The venue also has a lovely area for visitors to enjoy their picnic lunches and a large playground for the kids, she adds.

mother and her baby are said to be recovering well after the mother gave birth in a holding cell at the Table View Police Station.

“We received a call from the police informing us about a woman in the cells who was in active labour.

“We responded to the call to attend to the mother who was in custody going through an uncomplicated delivery.

“Thankfully we were backed up by our colleagues at the province’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) ambulance service,” explains Kevin Jones, Community Medics chief executive. Jones was assisted

by Fabio Moreira, advanced life support paramedic volunteer for Community Medics who was on duty for the EMS ambulance service at the time.

The mother, a 23-year-old who was in custody for shoplifting earlier that morning, was in severe pain at the time of their arrival, Jones says. “Upon our arrival we saw uniformed police members assisting the mother.”

Captain Adriana Chandler, police spokesperson, told the media that their members assisted the woman when she went into labour in one of the holding cells, and calmed her until the medics arrived.

The mother did not appear to be pregnant at the time of the arrest and she also did not inform the police that she was carrying a child, Chandler said.

After giving birth, the Dunoon mother and baby, both in a healthy condition, were transported to the New Somerset Hospital in Cape Town, Jones told TygerBurger.

“For us it is nice to be able to support the community while we await other ambulance services.

“We often see the worst state of people, being the first on scene. This time however it was rewarding to have received such a call, one that is gratifying,” says Jones, who has been with Community Medics since 2015, but in the medical environment for nearly 20 years.

He says having to deal with childbirth in an environment other than a hospital is something that is not so bad. “I am comfortable delivering babies anywhere,” Jones says.

One gesture he felt was heart-warming during Thursday morning’s events was when police members offered to buy the baby and mother some infant blankets, clothes and nappies.

“We applaud them for that. They really treated the mother like a patient, and not a person who was in prison,” Jones says.

Chandler says the mother was given a care pack from the Victim Support Room, kindly provided by Woman Against Rape.

Lieutenant-Colonel Hendrik Nel, acting station commander, thanked Jones and Moreira for delivering the baby safely. The mother was also very grateful to everyone who helped her, Chandler says. . The mother’s name cannot be published as she is yet to appear in court.

he folks at Change4theBetter pro-life animal rescue foundation stand to lose the shelter, unless they raise the R4.8m needed to purchase the farmland they are currently leasing.

Their lease on the farm situated on the outskirts of Brackenfell and Kraaifontein expires at the end of December 2018. “Sadly, the landlord has put the farm up for sale and received an offer to purchase for R4.8m.

This has placed us on terms that not only put the shelter and the work that we do in jeopardy but also the lives of the 250 animals in our care,” says a spokesperson for the foundation.

Having first option to purchase the property, the foundation has until the end of December 2018 to raise the R4.8m.

If they fail to do so, they will need to vacate the property with all the animals.

“In the past two and a half years, we have made the farm our home. This is a home to 250 animals who have been rescued from severe conditions. “We have given them a chance by treating them, rehabilitating them and hopefully one day finding their happily ever after. Our animals live here, our adoption facility is here, our community shop that raises funds is here, our sterilisation clinic is here and our hearts are here.

“Without this farm, we have nothing and nowhere to go. Our 250 animals will once again be homeless. The impoverished surrounding community can no longer come to us and ask us for help with their animals,” she says.

The foundation takes care of thousands of animals in the surrounding communities of Wallacedene and Bloekombos.

“With many sleepless nights, and a lot of thinking, we have decided to start the Buy a Brick campaign.

“We need to sell one brick to 100 000 people in order to raise enough funds to buy our farm and collect enough bricks to build a wall around our farm, for security reasons.” Individuals, schools or businesses can get involved by buying a brick for R50.

“You will have the option to have your brick personalised with your name engraved on it. You also have the option to dedicate your brick to a late/special family member or your very own pet. There is no limit to the amount of bricks that you would like to purchase.” All schools may take part in a competition to see who sells the most bricks to win R20 000. “Businesses can buy a wall for R5000, with the option to brand it for visible advertising on our busy roads (Botfontein/Bottelary).”

n Friday 9 November, the Western Cape Department of Health presented its 2017/18 annual report to the Standing Committee. According to a media statement, the department serviced more than 6.5 million people in the province (75.3% uninsured), with a budget of R22bn.

During the 2017/18 financial year, the department continued its unparalleled 14year track record of unqualified audits, and three years of clean financial audits.

The department delivered the following during the 2017/18 reporting period: •14.1 million primary care contacts •92 819 baby deliveries •85 822 (81.2%) children under one year fully immunised •492 303 patients transported by ambulance services, of which 29.5% were priority 1 •285 936 patients admitted to acute district hospitals •7443 cataract operations performed •256 821 patients on ART; •57 per 100 000 live births maternal mortality ratio, which is the lowest in the country •9.3 per 1000 live births in-facility neonatal mortality rate, the lowest in the country •80.2% TB treatment success rate •0.2% mother-to-child HIV transmission rate at 10 weeks There was extensive maintenance carried out on facilities and equipment throughout the province. Some of the most significant capital projects completed in 2017/18 include the new District Six CDC in Cape Town, new bulk store at Karl Bremer Hospital, new emergency centre at Stellenbosch Hospital, CT scan and ward completion project at Khayelitsha Hospital and the upgrading of the emergency centre at Tygerberg Hospital.

In a media statement, Minister Nomafrench Mbombo said the department has performed exceptionally well despite the fiscal constraints. The delivery of several new and upgraded health facilities was a major highlight.

“This will go a long way to assist with the growing number of patients relying on the public health system and the quadruple burden of disease. These achievements would not have been possible without the dedicated health professionals who work tirelessly to deliver this essential service to the people of the Western Cape,” said Mbombo.

The event, From Bach with Love, is a Christmas celebration in the reconciliatory spirit of Tata Madiba.

The performance will feature excerpts from the Bach Cello Suites on cello and viola, as well as Bach Partitas on violin, while traditional Christmas carols will also be played. The performance will include poetry, narrative and puppetry.

The aim of the concert is to celebrate the spirit of reconciliation and peace whilst raising awareness about the scourge of violence against women and children.

Bella Poetica Musica is a classical string music trio composed of two cellists and a viola player. The previous fundraising performance for the Tygerbear Clinic raised just over R2700 and the ensemble hopes to double this for the Christmas fundraiser.

As part of our weekly movie competition, in celebration of the soon-to-be released movie Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, set in JK Rowling’s Wizarding World, we asked readers to tell us what their favourite Harry Potter book is and why.

V My all-time favourite Harry Potter has to be the first book, The Philosopher’s Stone, as it opened a whole new world of wonder, magic and excitement for me lasting up to this day. I remember my aunt’s first visit from her new home in New Zealand. She brought me this unknown title as a gift.

By then I was still in my early teens and I began reading the first chapter whilst visiting family for a braai. Soon I was hooked on the storyline. I loved it and couldn’t put it down. I finished it the very next day! I loved sharing the excitement of the books and movies with my aunt.

We’re really Potty about Potter and what’s great is that even now she’s continuing the tradition by reading the novels with her own son. Such a timeless classic for old and young, bringing a little magic in an all too complicated and miserable world. - Ianthe Walters V There are a lot of favourites but if I must pick one, I would have to go with Half Blood Prince. There are many reasons why but mainly I just love the scene where they get the fake locket from the sea cave – that scene in both the book and movie is so great. Also I find the backstory of Lord Voldemort very interesting. His story is so great and it shows the progression from being Tom Riddle to the infamous Lord Voldemort. Then I also love when everyone realises that Harry has been right all along about the return of Voldemort.

Then it goes without saying that all of the scenes with Harry and Dumbledore are such a treat. I think this book is the most amusing and it has some serious jawdropping moments and I just love all of the crazy relationships going on in it. Really entertaining. - Crystal Fourie V My favourite Harry Potter book/movie is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It’s the coming-of-age story of Harry, Hermione and Ron. It has a beautiful Yule Ball where Hermione stuns in a beautiful evening dress. There is a Quidditch World Cup and the action of the Goblet of Fire where there are fantastic beasts like Dragons and Mer people of the Lake and added to it all the heartbreak of Cedrick Diggory being murdered during the Tri Wizard Competition. - Brent Gladwin V I enjoyed reading all the Harry Potter novels; however, my favourite one has to be the very first, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It transported me to a different magical world. It was amazing, there were elements of action, some parts were scary reading about “he who must not be named”. I especially enjoyed the part where they played wizards’ chess because I enjoy playing chess myself and I felt really cool knowing Ronald could play chess too. It was one of those books you cannot put down. I loved the movie too but I feel that the book was just better in that it grabbed my attention and actually made me somewhat of a bookworm. Laaiqah Khan V When it comes to Harry Potter, it doesn’t get better than The Prisoner of Azkaban. Rowling’s third foray into the world of magic and mischief is the most endearing and enduring, painting a stunning portrait of Harry’s past and the family he never knew. We see Harry truly begin to grow into his own, facing his fears as he defeats dementors and conquers the demons his father left behind. Prisoner of Azkaban gives us the pleasure of learning about the Marauders and brings to life some of the series’ best and most beloved characters in Remus Lupin and Sirius Black. I fall in love every time with the two misunderstood outcasts who have been rejected by society, and enjoy watching as our young trio overcome every prejudice to help Remus and Sirius. Harry, Ron, and Hermione grow in empathy, wit, altruism, and general magical skill to save both the “criminal” and the hippogriff, and we see that James’s and Sirius’s dedication to helping a friend at all costs did not die with the previous generation. - Nicolene Janse van Rensburg

Vrydagoggend het ek die Dierebeskermingsvereniging se kantore in Grassy Park geskakel. Die vrou het gesê hulle is oorlaai met werk, maar sy sal kyk wat sy kan doen.

Omstreeks 13:00 het iemand geskakel, die besonderhede gevra, en toe later die middag hier aangekom – al die pad van Grassy Park af. Hoewel hulle probeer het, het die voël hom toe nie laat vang nie, maar hulle het ons verseker die voël sal aanpas by sy omstandighede en nie vrek nie.

Minibus taxis get away with murder It’s incredible that minibus taxis have carte blanche in what could in actual fact be termed “attempted manslaughter” or at least negligent and reckless driving all over Cape Town and South Africa on every single road, intersection and bridge every single minute of the day.

These irresponsible drivers risk the lives of their passengers and other commuters

blatantly without fear, pushing in and ahead even through red robots against other traffic. The authorities seem to be unaware of or ignoring this, or their controls are clearly ineffective and out of control.

Surely users of professional driving permits should act with more responsibility including facing the wrath of the law, having their taxis impounded and driver’s licence suspended, along with special training classes in morality and safety regarding the rules of the road.

Give pro-fireworks argument a rest Every year you post the same pro-fireworks letter from Agi Orfanos (“Fireworks boost income, tourism,” 7/10).

As always, his facts are incorrect – the same beachfront (and not only its residents but its animals, including the wildlife in the nature area of the adjacent vlei, are subject to fireworks not only once a year as he states but three times a year – Guy Fawkes, Diwali (two nights later) and 31 December.

Orfanos also always goes on about how this “attracts tourism”. Well it seems, based on the litter the next day, that only KFC directly benefits from the “tourism”.

Give it a rest, Agi – let’s have it on your verge year after year and see what you say then!

Decriminalising dagga a good thing The decriminalising of cannabis (dagga) is definitely something to be welcomed

and not scorned.

There is no question that addiction is a problem in our society, but the only way to address this challenge effectively is with factual information and logical thinking. For one, criminality related to cannabis has been chiefly centred on possession; that is, it is not a cause of crime in the same way that physically addictive substances are.

Alcohol is legally obtainable even though it has more adverse effects than cannabis, but up to now people have been declared to be criminals for the act of just smoking a joint, just as they might otherwise have a beer.

The decision to decriminalise the possession of cannabis was a ground-breaking event in the history of decolonising South Africa. This decision was not an arbitrary policy decision by vote-seeking politicians, but the considered opinion of a full bench of South Africa’s most senior judges. It relates to our human rights that are protected by our Constitution and consequently is important to every one of us in preserving these rights.

Combating addition of any kind requires reason, scientifically researched facts and protection of human rights as the basis on which to go forward.

Harsh reality of a child’s addiction I wish to share this sad story to highlight the plight of parents who struggle with their children’s addiction.

On my way to the store this week, a client caught my attention when he called out to me from a distance. I was glad to see him but my happiness ended abruptly when he informed me that he

had buried his adult son the night before. His son overcame a 10-year battle with drugs after being in a rehab for five months.

He started working to get back his life. On his way home with his dad, he apparently slumped in the seat in the bakkie and passed away.

He apparently had a heart attack.

I froze, not knowing what to say. How does a parent come to terms with such a loss after trying so hard to save their child from drugs?

I empathise with parents who have to cope with the harsh realities of addiction in their lives whilst trying to meet life’s many challenges and curve balls.

I salute those parents who never give up but live in hope.

Miserable Metrorail experience During a recent trip, I realised again how the journey on Metrorail’s southern line is beautiful, especially along the coast.

Unfortunately carriages are invariably covered in graffiti and there is vandalism of slashed seats and dirty windows.

Train stations are poorly signed and carriage windows are often opaque so that working out which station a train has stopped at requires extensive commuting experience.

When Metrorail makes an announcement, it is through such a bad PA system that the message is inaudible.

Sometimes it is to announce that a train is cancelled or late, but the announcement is often so late itself, that it is pointless.

A message in his ‘mess’ of a life CARINA ROUX

battle against addiction. He shares his story at schools and churches and registered a non-profit organisation called Healing Waters a few months ago.

There is a lot of denial around the issue of drug addiction in some of the more affluent areas, says Allan. Here parents often think money can solve all their problems.

Allan believes in tough love and follows a three-phase approach when a parent contacts him about their child who is an addict.

First, he will sit down with the parents alone, then with the child and lastly all together.

What is needed is an intervention. He says sometimes it can take a week or two or a few months until they get to the point where someone says, “You know what, I do have a problem”. Then they are in a good place, says Allan, “now we can move forward and do a placement”. Allan says he looks at the situation in the home – sometimes there are parents who are alcoholics or on drugs and when the situation is not stable you have to get the addict out. If he sees that the situation at home is stable he can offer an outpatient programme, says Allan. “Especially if they work then you don’t want to cause disruption.” He will then offer sessions in the evening over a six-week period – three hours a week. The programme he offers is based on his own journey and deals with feelings of rejection, low self-esteem and self-image. Drugs are not the problem, says Allan. “You have to find out what inner pain they are suppressing and deal with it.”

Allan says he cannot change people, but he can have an impact on their life. “What looks impossible to you is possible for God.” Before he starts a programme with someone he wants to see their commitment. “If there is a support group meeting tonight I can come pick you up at your house, but I will ask you to meet me at the corner or to take a taxi to show you are committed,” says Allan.

The Leonsdale Library makes an office available to Allan. He also uses a coffee shop in Bellville. Allan is also involved with Reconciliation Ministries in Parkwood and he does some court interventions.

Allan would like to do a fundraising walk from Cape Town to Pretoria where he would do talks at schools and prisons along the way. He says the idea is to raise funds for those families who struggle to put bread on the table and can’t afford the cost of rehabilitation for a loved one. Allan is looking for an events company or someone who might be able to assist with the organisational side of making the walk a reality. e’s got nothing to hide, for in his ‘‘mess of a life’’ there is a message, says Allan Rehbock (51) from Ruyterwacht. And if you listen to his journey to the present one can’t help thinking he’s got more lives than a cat. Often people with children involved in drugs and gangsterism think there is no way out, he says. ‘‘Families are so at wits’ end, they don’t know what to do.” But there is hope, and Allan says he is living proof that it is possible.

Allan, born to a mixed-race couple in the ’60s, grew up in Simon’s Town. He says he first got involved with drugs at age nine.

“By age 11 I was certified a juvenile delinquent for selling drugs at school.” He was sent to a place of safety in Wynberg and transferred to Die Bult Industrial School in George. Here things just escalated, he says.

With his dad being a “coloured” man, Allan says he was not fearful to enter the so-called coloured areas to obtain dagga and other drugs. This, he says, elevated him to have that power of authority over others – “not because they were scared of me, but because I could get the product [drugs] they wanted.” He says he used to get some of the boys to break into shops in town – “especially the suit shops because in the ‘African’ areas where I got the drugs from they wanted suits. They paid me ‘richly’ for the suits.”

Eventually Die Bult could no longer deal with him and he was sent to Tokai Reformatory. From here he would repeatedly run away and often found himself in the gangand drug-infested areas. Things progressed, and Allan became a driver for a gang figure, picking up and dropping off drugs or money.

With anything in life, whether good or bad, there are consequences, says Allan. He was in and out of prison and spent a total of 21 and a half years behind bars. He had a son born while he was in prison who he met for the first time at age six in 1991 when he came out of prison again. Allan picked his son up from the boy’s mother one day and says they drove around between areas like Lavender Hill, Mitchell’s Plain and Grassy Park.

“As I was a driver/bodyguard I became a bit of a wanted figure and they used to open up fire on my car quite regularly,” he says. On that fateful day Allan’s son got shot while he was in the car with him. His anger at his son’s death manifested in Allan becoming more violent himself and having many a close encounter at death’s door. In a long list he mentions his hip being blown off by a shotgun, a shot in the knee, metal plates in his face after losing part of his cheekbone, his car being driven off Ou Kaapse Weg, 89 days in a coma, months in hospital...

He lifts his shirt to reveal a scar on his stomach and shows the elevation on his hand where a bullet still rests. In 2000 he was in a head-on collision on his motorbike and was told he would never be able to become a father again. “Me and my wife had two children since – they can’t explain it.”

Allan says he has never been religious – “Yes, okay, God is there”. But all these things drew him closer to God and he came “to a point of full surrender”. There are many factors to this, he says, but the main thing is to be obedient to what the Word of God says. He is far from perfect, says Allan, but he’s got a vision of striving to be better than he was yesterday.

What he picked up from the gang and drug world is the arrogance, he says – “Jy kan my niks maak nie”. When he looks back he says this was also evident in all his downfalls, “because I thought I was untouchable”. Today Allan says he can implement the lessons he learned to help others fight the Allan Rehbock

Festival in support of furry friends

he summer sun coupled with a slight breeze made for a fun family day out at Sunday’s Rescue Rehab Summerfest “Crankit for Critters” music festival.

The event, which was held at Hillcrest Estate in Durbanville, was in aid of charity. Money that was raised went towards animal welfare.

The bands that took to the stage included Slow Brew’d, Joe Public, Gareth James, The

Sweet Resistance and The Rudimentals.

Festival goers could cool down in the man-made dam while enjoying the music. Food stalls and a bar were also available while the young ones could enjoy themselves on a jumping castle.

Hilarious twosome on tour “They’re in it together. Not together-together, but together ...”

Comedy’s modern traditionalist and bad momma, Ndumiso Lindi and Tumi Morake, have announced Cape Town as part of their hilarious new stand-up show, Married...But Not To Each Other.

Following successful shows in Pretoria, Johannesburg. Botswana, Nelspruit, Secunda, Krugersdorp, Port Elizabeth and Mafikeng, Lindi and Morake will be returning to Cape Town for one night only on Friday 16 November at the Baxter Theatre.

Morake travelling together on a comedy adventure and being asked by a customs official: “Are you married?” Lindi quickly replied: “Yes”, realised what he was saying and added: “But not to each other.” Thus began the comical journey for this husband and wife of other people.

The show is a hilarious take on the roles and regulations of marriage and the potholelaced roads the sexes have to navigate. It’s not only about marriage but about the world that these marriages have to survive in.

Lindi, the gentleman of South African comedy, otherwise known as Roosta, effortlessly blends new-age style with old-school traditions. His deep voice, soul-warming smile, booming laughter, original content and seamless delivery make for a comedic act which is soulfully South African.

With a comedic career spanning over 11 years, Morake continues to be a formidable force in the comedy industry. Her edgy and unpredictable brand of comedy has wowed audiences around the globe.

When not gracing the stage Morake can be seen on TV hosting WTFTumi and Point of Order as well as channelling her talents into writing, acting and producing.

Catch ‘Mash’ on stage in Cape Town D

urban-based pianist and composer Sibusiso “Mash” Mashiloane will be in Cape Town for various concerts from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 November, as part of his Closer to Home tour.

Mashiloane’s third album, Closer to Home, comes at a time in his career where he wants to focus on his social and musical identity.

Born in Mpumalanga, surrounded by Ndebele, Pedi and Swazi people, and later moving to KwaZulu-Natal, Mashiloane observed that each society breathes its own character. “If that character is not embraced, the significance of being part of it is lost,” he says.

Closer to Home serves as the culmination of the various musical dialects and characteristics of the communities in which Mashiloane has lived.

He doe not, however, see it as a complete reflection but a serious starting point, from which he hopes to attain a better understanding through his studies and musical encounters.

The album features contributions by a list of established artists such as Kunle Ayo on guitar, Tlale Makhene on percussion, Paki Peloeole on drums and Qhubekani Mthetwa on bass guitar.

“These musicians all take pride in their identity and are not only driven by their music’s skill impressions but also by relevancy and accuracy,” says Mashiloane.

hree victories in Durbanville over the weekend secured South Africa a 5-2 series win over France.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the series the games moved from Boksburg Cardinals in Gauteng to Hoy Park in KwaZulu-Natal.

South Africa came unstuck in both games for France to level the series.

In game three France ran out 11-9 winners, with SA leaving 13 runners stranded on bases. Dean Jacobs started and came a cropper in the third inning, conceding five runs, and in the fourth inning conceding a further three runs. He was relieved by Brad Erasmus, Kieran Cree, Brad Erasmus and Timothy Lee. The top batters for SA were Kyle Botha 3/6, Dayle Feldtman 1/2 and Rowan Ebersohn hitting a solo home run in the fifth inning.

In game four, even captain Jonathan Phillips hitting 4/4 couldn’t stop the team from suffering back-to-back losses (5-4) for France to level the series at 2-all.

Kevin Townsend had the start and went five innings and conceded three runs before he was relieved by Cameron Fortuin for two where he conceded one

run. Jared Elario came on in the eighth with the score tied. He conceded the winning run to France in the bottom of the ninth.

The games moved to Cape Town with three games to decide the winner.

Robert Lewis Walker pitched six scoreless innings to set up South Africa’s 7-1 victory.

He was relieved by Cameron Fortuin who also threw two scoreless innings before being replaced by Damon King who conceded the only run in the ninth inning.

Kyron Bibis and Jonathan Phillips both hit two-run home runs. This allowed South Africa to take a 3-2 series lead.

In game six France got off to a terrible start, conceding nine runs in the first inning from seven hits, including a threerun home run from Kyle Botha, two walks and two errors.

France was unable to recover from this setback, and lost 13-1 in seven innings, even though both teams were held scoreless for the next five innings.

This win clinched the series for South Africa.

In the final game South Africa ran out 11-4 winners with home runs courtesy of Rowan Ebersohn (2), Brandon Bullion and Charl Cordier. South Africa utilised seven pitchers for the day – Dean Jacobs, Damon King, Timothy Lee, Brad Erasmus, Kieran Cree, Kevin Townend and Jayde Thorne.
