Artwork proves its point NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

n artwork depicting greed proved its point in an unexpected way when the R200 note adorning it was stolen at an exhibition in Bellville last week. The work by Geert Oliver forms part of the “Unbearable Lightness” group exhibition currently on show at the Art.b Gallery inside the Bellville Library. It depicts a phallic object protruding from the wall in an erect position. A piece of the wall from where it’s protruding is covered in tiles usually seen in showers. A showerhead extends from the tiles right above the phallic object, as if ready to start gushing water over it. A R200 note is wrapped around the phallic object, which is reminiscent of that belonging to a white male. It was the R200 note that was stolen last week, therefore vandalising the artwork. “Power Shower”, is displayed in a section devoted to politically inspired art. “Power Shower” gives an obvious reference to former president Jacob Zuma, Oliver explains, but also focuses on sexism, greed and corruption. “I made the artwork a few years ago when (Zuma) was still president, but it is still very relevant.” Oliver says he was contacted by the gallery a day after the opening of the exhibition, saying the R200 note had been stolen. “They must have used a bit of force because it was pasted on.” He doesn’t believe the intent was to vandalise his artwork but was probably financially motivated. “In a way, it validates the work. It’s really about human greed (and stealing the note) proves the point.” Oliver has since substituted the R200 note with another one, which has a stronger adhesive. V To page 15.
