A

church youth leader in Rondebosch facing numerous charges relating to sexual grooming of teenage boys appeared in court last week after he was rearrested at his new dwelling in Durbanville.

The man (26) was first arrested in September last year after he allegedly sexually

groomed scores of teenage boys and congregants at Common Ground Church.

He cannot be identified because he has not yet pleaded. The suspect, who also worked as a school sports photographer, allegedly posed as sexy teenage girls – a process referred to as “catfishing” – on Instagram and WhatsApp and lured teenage boys into sending him naked photographs of themselves.

If they refused he would threaten to expose

them on social media.

He was arrested when a congregant’s parents realised their son was an alleged victim.

After the suspect’s first court appearances at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court and subsequent release on bail, he moved to an address in Durbanville.

Here the suspect, a UCT master’s graduate, lived for a few months before being rearrested two weeks ago in connection with

charges relating to the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act. It is uncertain whether any victims are from the northern suburbs.

He was set to apply for bail in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, but his case was postponed to May. He is being held at Goodwood Prison.

Jelly tots collect bottle tops: The kids at the Jolly Tots Playschool in Durbanville have been collecting plastic bottle tops for Operation Smile South Africa. At the school the kids were taught about children born with what is called a cleft palate/lip. When they heard that they could help these children by collecting bottle tops, the kids were eager to make a difference. All bottle tops are handed in at the Durbanville Community Church. Schools compete in athletics The annual interschools athletics day between the independent schools of CBC St John’s Parklands, Melkbosstrand Private School, Blouberg International School, Riverside College and El Shaddai Christian School took place during the first term at the Tygerberg Athletics Club in Parow.

El Shaddai Christian School won the overall athletics trophy, with Blouberg International winning the spirit trophy.

The day was thoroughly enjoyable, with much camaraderie and competition between the schools, and many new friendships were formed among the learners.

r Miyagee is no ordinary little dog.

This five-month-old longcoat Chihuahua has a big task at hand, travelling the country to spread the message of responsible pet care.

As the new ambassador of the Dare 2 Care Campaign launched

by Pet Mall SA, Mr Miyagee, along with his human mom Lindi Pie­terse from Bellville, visits schools to teach children how to care for their pets.

He made a guest appearance at the annual Cutie Pie community dog show held at Brackenfell Pri- In honour mary School on Human Rights Day. “We want to inspire the youth with a story of courage, respect and unconditional love in honour of a special needs Pekingese dog named Princess Lee-Lu,” says Pieterse.

Princess Lee-Lu was Mr Miyakee’s predecessor in the campaign, but unexpectedly died of a stroke on Christmas Day last year at the age of 10 years. Princess Lee-Lu had a rough start in life. She made history when she was born as part of a unique set of fraternal twins. She had a femur resection at six months of age and turned blind due to an inherited disease called progressive retinal atrophy. She was diagnosed as hyper allergic to her environment and food sensitive, and to add to the list she had unilateral deafness.

Mr Miyagee joined the household as a little pup a week before Christmas last year, and was accepted as her own by Princess Lee-Lu. “It was heart-warming to see how maternal she was in fussing over the pup, despite her own disabilities and illnesses. Her death left us totally heartbroken as her legacy touched so many pet lovers’ hearts. She was the heart and soul not only of our campaign but of our family too”.

After excelling at puppy school, Mr Miyagee stepped up to the challenge to be the new campaign ambassador.

“He might be small in size but his story will be mighty,” says his very proud mom.

“We are working on creating awareness among pet lovers and the youth through our outreach programme.

Pets are our close companions because they provide love, comfort, safety, happiness, laughter and friendship. Pets teach us to have more patience with life and to enjoy the simple things.”

Pieterse aims to educate the youth and teach them more about pet health care, safety around pets, nutrition, how to care for special needs pets and the various roles pets can play in the community.

“Because animals do not have the power of speech and can’t complain when they are mistreated, we must treat them with even more consideration than people.

“Our goal is to help cultivate a new generation of pet owners and responsible pet guardians.”

Heftige besware oor nuwe ontwikkeling DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

O

ntwikkelaars beoog om die digtheid in die area te vervierdubbel met ’n behuisingsontwikkeling op die hoek van Belami-laan en Brackenfell-boulevard in Sonstraalhoogte.

Indien dit goedgekeur word, sal die woonstelblok vier verdiepings hoog wees met 139 woonstelle op ’n rapsie meer as een hektaar grond.

Inwoners het verlede Maandagaand saam met hul wykraadslid Gerhard Fourie ontmoet om hul besware te bespreek.

Dit was die tweede openbare vergadering in dié verband.

Volgens die aansoek wat in Februarie gebring is, het ontwikkelaars versoek om die beplanningsvoorwaardes op die erf wat tans vir sakedoeleindes gesoneer is, te wysig.

Die huidige voorwaardes op die grond bepaal dat ’n digtheid van meer as 0,5 op die skaal nie toegelaat mag word nie, en dat die hoogte van enige ontwikkeling nie hoër as enkelvlak mag wees nie.

Die aansoek is gebring om digtheid te verhoog na 2 op die skaal, met ’n vierverdiepinggebou.

Inwoners sê dis juis om dié rede dat hulle in die woonbuurt belê het.

“Voor ons besluit het om hier te koop, het ons navrae gedoen oor die oop erf en is daar vir ons gesê dat die digtheid op die grond beperk is,” sê een inwoner wat nie sy naam genoem wil hê nie.

Inwoners betwyfel ook of die Stad hul amptelik kennis gegee het oor die beplande ontwikkeling soos wetlik voorgeskryf.

Volgens die Stad is briewe per geregistreerde pos na die 50 nabye huise gestuur, en is bewys daarvan by die vergadering gelewer.

“Baie van ons het nie eers posbusse nie, so hoe sou die poskantoor die registrasiekennisgewings afgelewer het?” sê ’n ander inwoner.

Inwoners sê hulle het eers sowat twee weke terug uitgevind dat die sluitingsdatum vir besware op 5 April is en moes blitsig bymekaarkom om besware op te stel.

Tydens die vergadering het Fourie sy bekommernisse uitgespreek oor die aansoek.

“Die verkeer in die area is reeds onder hewige druk wat net vererger gaan word met nog bykomende verkeer,” sê Fourie.

Motoriste wat van die gedeelte in Brackenfell-boulevard gebruik maak tydens spitsure, spandeer daagliks sowat ’n halfuur om minder as ’n kilometer te reis.

“Dis ’n nagmerrie,” sê Fourie.

Volgens hom is die kruising by De Bronlaan en Brackenfell-boulevard ook onder hewige druk as gevolg van die feit dat Sanral nog geen planne gemaak het om die enkelbaanbrug oor die N1 te verbreed nie.

“Twee ander beplande ontwikkelings in De Bronlaan en die nuwe Laerskool Vredeskool sal ook meer verkeer toevoeg,” sê hy.

City to spend R2.1bn on new housing transport interchanges in the inner City, Bellville, Retreat and Somerset West, and for new minibus taxi facilities in Dunoon, Masiphumelele and Makhaza from 2018/19 until 2020/21.

The TDA will spend a proposed R232 million over the next three financial years to rehabilitate and reconstruct roads across the City. A further R327 million will be spent on facilities for cyclists and pedestrians, such as universally accessible sidewalks, pedestrian crossings and walkways in Eerste River, Elsies River, Mitchell’s Plain, Blaauberg and the northern suburbs from 2018/19 until 2020/21.

As far as congestion relief is concerned, the TDA has allocated R481 million over the next three financial years for the construction of new road infrastructure to address traffic congestion. Some of the projects that are already underway are Belhar Main Road and Erica Drive in Belhar, and Langverwacht Road in Kuils River.

“Spatial transformation must bring jobs closer to people and people closer to jobs.

Lower income households living on the periphery of the City spend on average almost half their monthly income on transport.

These residents, situated in dense, predominantly informal areas, travel at great cost to less densely populated areas of Cape Town where jobs and services are located.

“The high costs of transport and long travel distances for low-income communities to their places of employment within the urban core are an apartheid legacy which we must reverse. We also need to densify because the demand for housing is increasing rapidly. Although our population increased by 7% between 2011 and 2016, the number of households increased by 18% because households are getting smaller,” says Herron.

The draft budget is now available for public comment on the City’s website.

he City proposes to spend R2.1 billion on the development of new housing opportunities over the next three financial years, with R585 million being budgeted for 2018/19 alone.

This was revealed by Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport and urban development (TDA), in the City’s draft budget for the 2018/19 financial year, which was tabled on 28 March. The bulk of these housing opportunities will be developed on well-located land close to public transport services and job opportunities. As such, the TDA proposes to spend R105 million on the acquisition of land in the next financial year.

The draft capital budget provides a list of 36 housing developments which are either in the planning phase, already underway, or in the process of being finalised. These projects are situated in Atlantis, Heideveld, Fisantekraal, Grassy Park, Scottsdene, Durbanville, Bardale, Belhar, Delft and Blue Downs, among others.

“Most of the housing developments will be located within the City’s urban inner core, including areas adjacent to the N1, N2, N7 and M5 highways, along the R27 to the north and major arterials linking the Metro South-east with Bellville and Kuils River and the Cape Town International Airport,” said Herron in a statement to the media.

This is in line with the City’s Built Environment Performance Plan, which states that the City will prioritise public investment and incentivise private investment at public transport nodes and corridors within the City’s urban inner core.

“As such, the City will implement dense and transit-oriented development by promoting higher residential densities and mixed land use patterns, as well as regulatory reform, in support of spatial transformation,” he said.

Sassa social grant beneficiaries using their Sassa card to draw their money will have to pay an additional R10 in bank charges as of 1 April.

Appearing in Parliament, Sassa last week indicated that these banking charges are necessary because of the continued use of Grindrod Bank without a contract in place, pending the official takeover by the post office.

While Sassa, the National Department of Social Development and the Treasury conduct negotiations around how to subsidise this bank charge, the poor are expected to foot this bill.

Social development MEC for the Western Cape, Albert Fritz, condemned this move, saying that the poor should not pay for Sassa’s mistakes.

“This is an unjustified abuse of the poor, considering the charge is effectively the consequence of the mishandling by Sassa of its self-created grant crisis,” he said.

“In the context of the other rising costs of living, such as the higher fuel levy and increased VAT, this tardy administration by Sassa is unacceptable.

“Sassa is a national entity, run by the national government. The provincial department has no operational control over it. Despite this, we will continue to play our oversight role to protect the 1.5 million social grant recipients in the province.”

The disbursement of grants in cash will continue to be done by Cash Paymaster Services for another six months, as granted by the Constitutional Court, but according to Sassa, the awarding of a new contract for cash payments is already in jeopardy.

De Villiers het gesê die universiteit beleef relatiewe stabiliteit ondanks die onstuimigheid in die hoër on-

derwys die afgelope paar jaar.

“Ons staar ons egter nie blind teen ons foute nie. In die konteks van ons land se verdeelde geskiedenis, erken die US sy aandeel in die onregte van die verlede.

Daaroor het ons diepe berou. Ons vra diegene wat te na gekom is, opreg om verskoning. En ons gee erkenning aan die kritiese stemme in eie geledere wat beginselvas standpunt ingeneem het, hoe moeilik ook al.”

Hy het bygevoeg dat die US na groter diversiteit in terme van beide personeel en studentesamestelling streef.

De Villiers het hom duidelik uitgespreek oor Afrikaans. “Daar bestaan ’n wanopvatting dat die US die ondergang van Afrikaans bewerkstellig. Die teendeel is waar. Afrikaans is een van ons onderrigtale – maar om grondige pedagogiese redes, nie aangevuur deur ideologie of etniese identiteit nie.

“Party mense is bang dat ons gebruik van Afrikaans diegene kan uitsluit wat verkies om in Engels te studeer; ander vrees weer dat ons gebruik van Engels Afrikaans benadeel. Ek wil u graag verseker dat die universiteit verbind bly tot meertaligheid sonder uitsluiting. Taal behoort nooit vir enige student ’n hindernis te wees nie. Deur ook Engels as onderrigtaal te gebruik, sorg ons dat ons toeganklik is vir meer mense, en dit maak deure oop – plaaslik en internasionaal. Tog is daar steeds ’n groot behoefte aan en vraag na onderrig in Afrikaans; daarom sit ons ons aanbod daarin voort.”

Zille het gesê die US is vir haar soos Suid-Afrika se eie Stanford.

“Dit skep ’n ekosisteem waarin denkleiers en dinamiese entrepreneurs kan floreer as gevolg van die oorwig van intellektuele krag en idees.”

afety upgrades to the lookout area on Uys Krige Road between Loevenstein and Plattekloof, also known as Lovers’ Lane, were recently completed.

Cheryl Visser, councillor for ward 1, proposed the changes in a motion to the subcouncil on 18 May last year. In her motivation she mentioned that people from all walks of life visit the area at all hours of the day to enjoy the spectacular view and take photographs.

She proposed certain upgrades and changes “as loud music, illegal dumping and unacceptable behaviour by a small percentage of visitors have become unbearable at times”.

Visser says at the time she brought the motion, there was pressure to have the lookout closed to the public because of bad behaviour by visitors. She says she could not support the closure as it is a tourist attraction that needs to be preserved.

“We cannot allow a few culprits to take this away from all the law-abiding citizens,” she says. Changes were however necessary to improve the situation for the neighbouring property owners.

The following changes were made with the help of allocated funding from the ward 1 budget: . Road markings and parking allocations have changed and visitors are now allowed

to park, on the viewing side, for 60 minutes; . Sufficient signboards have been erected, clearly explaining that untoward behaviour will be prosecuted in terms of the bylaw relating to streets and public places; . Street lighting has been improved; . A tarred pavement has been built alongside the parking area; . Extra refuse bins have been put up; . A state-of-the art CCTV camera has been erected with a view of all parked vehicles.

This camera is linked to the City’s control room and will be monitored. Footage will be kept for prosecution purposes.

Visser says she trusts these measures will promote responsible behaviour.

“People disobeying the bylaws and causing a nuisance to residents of the area will be prosecuted,” she says.

She says she wishes to thank the following City departments for bringing the motion to fruition: Infrastructure Operations, Asset Management and Maintenance, District Roads and Stormwater, Metro Police, City Parks, Solid Waste and the Integrated Transport Portfolio.

Visser also thanked Gert Knoetze, chairperson of the Loevenstein Neighbourhood Watch, for his assistance and support in making the changes a reality.

it was net liniale, haarsproei en pienk klere waar jy kyk toe vier skoolkinders verlede week hul lang hare in ’n salon in Durbanville laat afsny het.

Die groep vriendinne (en party van hul ma’s en dié se vriendinne) het vir maande hul hare laat groei om dit vir die Kankervereniging van Suid-Afrika (Kansa) te skenk.

Whanita Ströhfeldt, wat die groep help organiseer het, sê sy en haar dogter, Iggi (14), het die idee verlede jaar bespreek. “Ons wou iets doen wat uit ons gemaksone is.”

Hulle het met hul onderskeie vriendinne gepraat en die idee het soos ’n veldbrand versprei. ’n Hele lys mense wou later ook hul hare laat groei om te skenk.

Party het al lank die idee gehad en het net

bietjie oortuiging nodig gehad.

Later het ses skoolkinders en drie volwassenes almal hare geskenk.

Die Mumtazz-salon het ingestem om lede van die groep verlede Donderdag gratis te help en personeel het spesiaal pienk gedra om hul ondersteuning te wys.

Haarkappers het reggestaan met liniale om seker te maak die skenkers se lokke is lank genoeg om vir Kansa te gee.

Jasché van Zyl (14), Mia Nell (14) en Iggi is almal leerders aan Hoërskool D.F. Malan en het op die dag hul hare geknip.

Tiani Launspach en Cari Geyer het op ’n ander datum hul hare laat knip.

Die jongste van die groep, Mia Nel (12), is ’n leerder by Laerskool Totius. Haar ouer sussie, Abbey (14), en ma, Ilze, se hare is op die dag met sproeiverf gekleur.

“Dit voel vreemd,” sê sy oor haar nuwe haarstyl.

Die ouer Mia (14) sê haar eerste gedagte was hoe lig haar kop nou voel.

“Dit voel vreemd,” sê sy.

Die volwassenes Mariette Lange, Laetitia Sieberhagen en Whanita het ook hul hare laat afsny.

“Ek het maar gedink dit is die minste wat ek kan doen,” vertel Lange.

What it means to be on the so-called blacklist There is no such thing as a blacklist. So says Jurgens Tubb of MHI Law. It simply means that there is negative data on your credit report which is recorded at a credit bureau.

This negative data can be anything from a plain collection on one of your loans, right through to judgment taken against you or a debt review.

A credit bureau is an organisation that keeps a record of your credit information.

Your credit record shows how you manage your debts and is used by credit providers and moneylenders to determine if you can afford to borrow money or pay back a new loan.

The National Credit Act says each credit bureau must be registered with the National Credit Regulator – who decides how your credit information can be used and who can see your credit record.

Negative data will have an impact on your ability to obtain loans or open retail accounts.

A credit provider will see this negative behaviour reflected on your credit record as a possible indicator of the manner in which you may behave if they were to grant you credit.

What is the role of a credit bureau?

When you take out your first loan with a credit provider, you have to complete a form which asks for consumer credit information – including your credit history, financial history, education, employment and identity details.

This information, as well as the details of the loan, is then furnished to a credit bureau which puts together a credit report.

What are your rights in relation to a credit bureau? . To be informed that a credit provider intends to report negative information on you to a credit bureau 20 working days before they do so; . To get a copy of your credit record from a credit bureau when you ask for it – you can get one free record per year, but may be charged a small fee for further records; . To challenge information kept by a credit bureau if you are unhappy with it; . For your information to be kept confidential, and for it to be used only for the purposes allowed.

ue to light pollution, entire generations of children growing up in big cities can no longer admire the splendour of our Milky Way. A major side effect of urbanisation, light pollution refers to the inappropriate or excessive use of artificial light and is often blamed for compromising health, disrupting ecosystems and spoiling aesthetic environments.

Research done by Canadian physicist Dr Christopher Kyba at the German Research Centre for Geoscience found that on average, artificial outdoor lighting is growing brighter at a rate of 2.2% annually. In developing countries this rate is higher.

The study was conducted between 2012 and 2016, whereby artificial light on earth or skyglow was measured using satellite imaging.

Kyba recently visited Cape Town where he presented a talk on the topic at the Astronomical Society of Southern Africa.

TygerBurger caught up with him at Night Sky Park just outside Bonnie­vale a fortnight ago, where he joined StarPeople, a local astronomy outreach programme, for a weekend of stargazing.

It is here in the velvety dark, starlit skies of the Breede River Valley where the absence of bright city lights is most noticeable.

But it is not only the visual blocking of the stars that worries scientists. The impact that light pollution has on human, animal and plant life is highly concerning.

“As the world evolved, animals and humans evolved with certain biologi-

For humans, not enough sunlight during the day and too much artificial light at night disrupts the human body clock, which has profound negative effects on our health,” says Kyba. Research suggests that artificial light at night can increase the risk for conditions such as depression and sleep disorders.

“Much research remains to be done but we know that in the animal kingdom, birds are mostly affected as they use the moon and stars for migration and have never evolved to deal with the brightness of artificial light. When they fly through a brightly lit area, it is not uncommon for birds to crash into buildings and towers,” he says.

In England it was also found that several types of trees hold onto their leaves for longer when bright light is shone onto them.

During his visit to Cape Town, Kyba noticed more upward lighting in our urban areas, compared to cities in Europe. “Upward lighting occurs when artificial light is emitted upwards into the sky, resulting in increased skyglow,” he explains.

“Due to this misdirected light upwards, the actual surface space is not lit, causing reduced visibility.”

Skyba says excessive lighting can in fact create more danger, and more light does not necessarily equal better vision.

“Bad (upward) lighting at night is a security risk and even beneficial to criminals, as it creates deep shadows that offer concealment,” he says.

“In addition, being temporarily blinded by a glaring light makes you an easier target for criminals who hide in dark places.”

Skyba says upward lighting can be avoided by using specific light covers or fittings on street and security lamps.

“The correct light fitting will direct the light to the surface area where it is needed, reducing glare. It will provide better vision for enhanced security.”

He also advises the use of amber LED lamps rather than bright blue-white ones.

“Lighting isn’t sustainable unless it is also beautiful. Carefully designed lighting will not only be more aesthetic but energy saving too.”

Hoe gaan dié pasiënt ooit kan oorleef?

Pas terug van die KKNK op Oudtshoorn is ’n mens se Afrikaanse battery weer opnuut herlaai.

Om musiek, toneelopvoerings en boekgesprekke in jou moedertaal te beleef, bly ’n groot voorreg.

Hoe lank dít nog die geval gaan wees, is natuurlik debatteerbaar.

Aan die een kant is daar diegene wat redeneer dat solank Afrikaans gepraat word, die taal nie sal uitsterf nie. Dit is nou ongeag of die taal landwyd by universiteite heeltemal uitgefaseer word of nie. Diegene glo vas dat ons nog in die verre toekoms net sulke lekker Afrikaanse feeste soos nou sal kan hou, want niemand gaan ophou sing of skryf in Afrikaans net omdat die taal se kraantjie op tersiêre vlak toegedraai word nie.

Die ander groep reken dat dit net op kort termyn ’n gegewe is dat Afrikaans sal oorleef. Soos Afrikaans toenemend as taal by universiteite en ander tersiêre instellings onder druk kom, gaan hierdie selfde druk begin oorspoel na skole.

Want waarom sal ouers dan in die toekoms hulle spruite in Afrikaanse skole hou as hulle nie naskools in Afrikaans onderrig kan word nie?

Ongelukkig moet ek met laasgenoemde pessimistiese groep saamstem.

Ontneem jy ’n taal van sy hoër funksies, is dit so goed jy koppel hom aan ’n hartlongmasjien. Eerstens stagneer die taal se ontwikkeling. Tweedens word dit as wetenskapstaal vernietig. En derdens raak dit as skryftaal betekenisloos en ontoepaslik.

Wanneer hierdie verengelsing eendag ook volledig na skole deurgetrek is, kan die Afrikaanse pasiënt se hartlongmasjien maar ontkoppel word. Want sterf sal hy sterf.

En oor twee of drie geslagte van nou af sal daar beswaarlik nog enige sprake wees van Afrikaanse musiek, toneelopvoerings, letterkunde of nuusdekking – ongeag of daardie jonger geslag nog in hul huis Afrikaans praat of nie. Want geen liedjieskrywer, dramaturg, romanskrywer of joernalis gaan onderleg genoeg wees in ’n taal waarin hulle nie eens op skoolvlak aan blootstelling gekry het nie. Hulle sal net in Engels kan dink en skryf. Die aanbod en aanvraag vir Afrikaans sal finaal opdroog.

Laat dit nie vergeet word dat ons eie krieketspan se kaptein betreklik onlangs aan dieselfde oortreding skuldig bevind is en dan is daar nog Hansie en ander spelers wat ook nie juis witter as sneeu was nie.

Tot ons skande staan ons dus nie met skoon hande nie en pas dit ons nie om so verontwaardig te wees nie.

Verder is die verwysing na die oorspronklike Australiese setlaars as tronkvoëls en diewe ongeregverdig – ’n bietjie navorsing sal toon dat baie van hulle weens uiters nietige oortredings, onder meer prostitusie, daarheen verban is, en om van ‘n kriminele geen te praat grens aan laster.

Indien ’n soortgelyke skrywe na die Hansie-episode in ’n buitelandse koerant verskyn het, sou ons nie juis geamuseerd gewees het nie.

‘Greeders’ versus proper breeders Erica Wessels (“‘Greeders’ the cause of dogs’ suffering”, 21/3) seems unaware that there are only two types of dog breeders: Firstly registered breeders of pure-bred dogs, where the breeder and their dogs are registered with the Kennel Union of South Africa (KUSA), and secondly all

other unregistered breeders.

The latter, whether they have one breeding pair or hundreds, are all backyard breeders and they all breed mongrels.

There is no such thing as a dog that is “pure-bred but not registered”.

Pure-bred, registered dogs are expensive – for a small type of dog up to R12 000. A puppy you buy from a registered breeder as a pet comes with a pedigree from several generations back, but will not be registered for breeding if not up to standard, specifically to avoid indiscriminate breeding.

Registered breeders are responsible people who have to adhere to strict standards, and lumping them together with the plethora of backyard breeders out there is ridiculous.

Cats falling prey to ‘serial killer’ dogs I stay in Sonkring, Brackenfell where three dogs have been killing cats since 2016.

These are three dogs roaming the streets. The owner stays in Protea Heights and allows his dogs to walk freely. Since 2016 these dogs have killed between 10 and 15 cats in their owners’ yards.

We have reached out to the SPCA but they cannot assist,

and Law Enforcement only issued the owner of the dogs with a contravention notice.

Our hero from Harley Davidson Recently, the clutch cable of our car broke unexpectedly and we found ourselves stranded at the side of a busy road in the Okavango industrial area. With our “selfhelp” mindset, we contemplated our options of how best to get the car to our mechanic’s workshop. One of us would need to get home to fetch the second car in order to tow the broken-down vehicle to the garage. How exactly to get home remained the contentious issue!

In a depraved “me-myselfand-I” world, when turning a blind eye and being seemingly oblivious to the plight of others has become the norm, it’s fascinating how the heartening action of just one person can restore hope in mankind.

We were still deliberating, when the Harley Davidson – Tyger Valley Service Assist vehicle (with a gleaming Harley-on-trailer in tow!) pulled up ahead of us, and the driver, Grant Minnies, came to our aid. Grant happened to be returning to the HD Tyger Valley dealership, located literally around the corner from the family home in Tijger Villas. Grant very kindly offered a ride, providing the first leg of our proposed action plan.

Grant, we salute you!

Sy is van die Suidooster-akteurs wat op Saterdag 5 Mei by TygerBurger en Suidooster se Grand Jol in die Grand Arena by GrandWest gaan wees.

Sy is ’n boorling van die Vrystaat en het haar dramagraad aan Tukkies voltooi.

“Ek het lank die rol van Daleen in Binnelanders vertolk en my huidige rol verskil baie, want Carmen is nie op haar bek geval nie. Sy hou daarvan om ’n ding te sê en soms sit sy haar voet in haar mond. Die twee karakters se klerestyl en smaak verskil ook baie, maar die een eienskap wat hulle deel, is dat wanneer hulle verlief raak, raak hulle baie verlief,” het sy gesê.

Sy het lidmaatskap van Golden Key ontvang en dit was ’n groot eer. Boonop het sy by die filmskool Starstruck School of Acting, nou Pali, baie geleer oor die skone kunste onder leiding van Shareen Swart.

“Dit was vir my man baie nice dat ek sy van wou vat en na al die ID-boeke en dinge verander is, raak mens tog gewoond daaraan. Ons het ’n vyfjarige seun, James Christopher, en ’n twintigmaande oue dogter, Robin Grace.

“Hulle het my lewe verander, maar ten goede. Dis soms moeilik om te werk en ma te wees, maar mens vind maniere om dinge te doen. Ons is ook gelukkig om ’n engel as ’n au pair te hê en James se skool- en Robin se dagmoeder het al soos familie geraak,” het Desiré gesê.

“As akteur moes ek leer om gefokus te bly al moet ek tussen tonele gou plan met die kinders maak of hulle soms op die stel hê.

Mens kan enige ding doen met die regte on-

dersteuningsnetwerk. Soms is Robin by Issy en Bolla, ons grimeerkunstenaars, of Andrea, produksie-koördineerder, en James by Gideon, Dean en Gantane, en ek moet uit my ma-skoene in my Carmen-hakke spring. Dit leer mens baie van multitasking,” het sy gesê.

Haar acting crush was Tobie Cronje en Leonardo de Caprio, maar op skool het sy net een crush gehad en dit was die Sharks- en Springbokkaptein Gary Teichman. “Ek het selfs een van ons eende na hom vernoem! Om te ontspan, hardloop, lees, skryf en lag is vir my lekker. As jy nie kan lag nie, gaan jy heeltyd huil. Die lewe is moeilik genoeg,” het sy gesê.

Sy is lief vir baldans en in haar kop is sy uitstekend, maar of sy werklik kan dans, weet sy nie.

“Ruiterbosch herinner my aan my grootwordjare in Bloemfontein, waar almal mekaar geken en geheg aan mekaar geraak het.

My ouers is my rots, maar my hele familie ondersteun my in wat ek doen. My man en kinders deel my daaglikse lewe en ons pak saam dinge aan.

“My nalatenskap moet wees dat ek mense liefgehad het, alle mense aanvaar het vir wie hulle is en dat ek my kinders geleer het om te lag en te glo.

Hannes van Wyk, Nadia Valvekens, Juanita de Villiers, André Velts en Jacques Bessenger het my baie van die kunste geleer,” het sy gesê.

Haar raad aan jong sterre is dat sommige goed tyd neem en baie van die grootste sterre, hetsy op televisie of in flieks, het baie jare ongesiens hul werk gedoen, gesukkel om erkenning te kry en “toe eendag het die meetsnoere mooi in plek geval”, het Desiré gesê.

Wat die publiek nie van haar weet nie, is dat sy nie daarvan hou om inkopies te doen nie.

“Ek sal graag eendag saam met Meryl Streep in ’n komedie wil speel, want sy is net amazing.

“My dag begin met ’n draffie om die wingerde met my Duitse herdershond en eindig met ’n glas rooiwyn as dit ’n goeie dag was,” het sy gesê.

Sy sal nie al haar rolle (ma, vrou, akteur) kan doen as dit nie vir die ondersteuning van die personeel van Suidooster is nie.

“Dis moeilik om een uit te sonder – hulle vriendelikheid, ondersteuning, liefde en humorsin maak dit lekker om by die werk te wees. Hulle laat my glimlag en dra my,” het Desiré gesê.

Ashley wys hakskene vir kampioen AVRIL FILLIES

D

ie feit dat Ashley Smith, 1 500 m-atleet van die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland, met die SA kampioen, Rantso Mokopane van die Noordwes-Universiteit, tydens die Varsity-atletiekbyeenkoms by Tukkies in Pretoria in die senior afdeling afgereken het, het hom moed gegee vir die SA Universiteite se veld- en baankampioenskap wat van 25 tot 29 April in Sasolburg plaasvind. Sy wentyd was 3:50,97.

“Ek was baie bly oor die prestasie, want dié seisoen het nie so goed gegaan nie. Albei kampioene, Rantso en Thembo Monoreng (vroue-atleet), was die gunstelinge om die wedlope te wen, maar moes tevrede wees met tweede plekke.

Hy is gebore en getoë in Mitchells Plain en het in ’n woonbuurt grootgeword waar sokker die botoon voer, en het besluit om middelafstande te doen.

“Ek wou aan my gemeenskap wys dat daar ander sport behalwe sokker, rugby en krieket is. Ek het besef ek het die uithouvermoë en kan oor lang afstande hardloop, en dit was maklik vir my om elke dag my oefenprogram te verbeter,” het hy gesê.

Sy pa, Fergus, is sy grootste held en hoewel hy nie ’n atleet is nie, maak sy pa alles vir hom moontlik om atletiek sy loopbaan te maak.

“My afrigter, Duane Fortuin, self ’n atleet, is ook my held, veral oor die manier waarop hy daagliks lewe en hoe hy jongmense hanteer. Op die Varsity-toernooi was ek my eie grootste teenstander, want ek het aan baie moeilike wedlope voor die byeenkoms in

Pretoria deelgeneem. Ek moes myself motiveer om goed te hardloop en het in die wedloop nie op enige ander atleet gefokus nie.

My sege was dus vir my ’n bonus,” het Ashley gesê.

Sy verhouding met sy afrigter is die sleutel tot sy sukses. “Jong atlete moet vertroue in hul afrigters hê om te glo dat wat die afrigter sê en doen, tot jou voordeel is. As dinge nie in jou guns swaai nie, moet jy nog steeds eer aan God bring, want dit is wat my tot op hede deurdra,” het Ashley gesê.

Hy is bly dat hy nie aan die SA junior byeenkomste deelgeneem het nie, want ander junior atlete het langs die pad uitgeval. Hy hoop maar sy tyd sal op senior vlak aanbreek om die SA span te haal en om op Sasolburg goed te doen. “Ek is baie trots op my kultuur en is deel van die Klopse, maar weens atletiek kan ek nie altyd deelneem nie. My ander stokperdjies is slaap en rus, want dit help my om te herstel en as atleet te groei. Dis seker hoekom ek langer as baie van my teenstanders is,” skerts hy.

Die beste raad wat hy gekry het, was van Fortuin wat gesê het dat Rome nie in een dag gebou is nie. “Geduld is die sleutel, ook in elke wedloop en ek pas dit getrou toe,” het Ashley gesê.

Hy was verbonde aan die Laerskool Imperial in Mitchells Plain en die Wes-Kaapse Sportskool in Kuilsrivier. Hy studeer tans vir ’n hoër sertifikaat in ekonomiese ontwikkeling aan die regeringskool by UWK. Sy boodskap aan jong atlete is dat jy nie moet kul nie, maar getrou aan jouself moet bly. “Moenie kyk na ander wat presteer nie, wag jou kans af en wees geduldig.”

Spanne slyp aan spel voor amptelike afskop SAREL BURGER Die meeste van die voorste rugbyskole se o.19A-spanne in die Tygerbergstreek was die afgelope tyd druk besig met hul finale voorbereiding vir die komende winterseisoen se eerste amptelike wedstryde aanstaande Saterdag.

Brackenfell, HS Tygerberg en BellvilleSuid was die spanne van die Tygerbergstreek wat ná twee reekse wedstryde tydens die Tony Stoops-toernooi in Brackenfell die beste gevaar het. Die Brakke het 27-

14 afgereken met New Orleans van die Paarl en Klein Nederburg 38-3 afgeransel.

Parow se Tiere het klaargespeel met Oudtshoorn se HS Bridgton (34-7) en Malmesbury se HS Schoonspruit (40-21) terwyl Bellville-Suid te sterk was vir HS Paulus Joubert van die Paarl (26-5) en HS Vredenburg (29-0).

De Kuilen het ná ’n onverwagte nederlaag van 0-10 teen Piketberg sake reggeruk teen HS Weston en die Vredenburgers 19-17 geklop. Monumentpark het eweneens gemengde welslae behaal met ’n oorwinning

van 24-10 oor Alexander Road (PE) en ’n nederlaag van 33-49 teen Groenberg (Grabouw). HTS Bellville het weggespring met ’n sege van 27-0 oor HS Sutherland (Pretoria) maar het toe 10-43 vasgeval teen New Orleans. Jan Kriel-skool was met 35-18 maklik bobaas teen Brackenfell se B-span, maar het met 17-24 die spit afgebyt teen Piketberg.

Ná die laaste reeks wedstryde eergister (2 April) sou ’n span gekies word wat (onder die benaming Renostertjies) later vanjaar ’n toer na Frankryk sal onderneem.

HS Bellville het met sy besoek aan die Landbouskool Oakdale se toernooi op Riversdal onverwags 15-24 pak gekry teen Rustenburg, maar het daarna vlam gevat teen HS Jeugland deur die span van Kemptonpark 45-0 te looi.

Stellenberg en Durbanville het swaar geleef in die taai Noord-Suid-toernooi in Pretoria. Die Stellies is met 42-10 opgekeil deur Menlopark en 41-19 deur Monument (Krugersdorp) terwyl Durbanville die kous oor die kop gekry het van Waterkloof (17-22) en Boksburg se HS E.G.Jansen (28-43).

Golf club hosts champs

The Bellville Golf Club recently played their club championships over four rounds. This tournament is the premier event on the club’s annual calendar. Sam Simpson holds the trophy after rounds of 69, 74, 63 and 66. With him are Andre Uys (club captain) and Quan Juries (golf operations manager).

ape Town Falcons Futsal Club based in Goodwood may only be eight months old but they are already making waves and considered to be one of the very best teams in the Cape Town Metropolitan Futsal League (CTMFL).

The commitment from management and the impeccable and positive attitude of the players is the key to their success.

The league games are played in Goodwood, Milnerton and Atlantis with the players of the club hailing from Belhar, Bellville, Kuils River, Goodwood, Bonteheuwel and Montana.

Until the club gets a venue of their own, preferably at a school in the northern suburbs, they are using facilities in Pinelands.

It is ironic that the drought in Cape Town is responsible for the growth in futsal, seeing as soccer players in general were looking for an alternative. Futsal is played indoors on a hard surface with a smaller, denser ball (less bounce). Teams are made up of five players, with one being the goalkeeper. Substitutions are rolling and games are 40 minutes in length.

rica, the reason being mainly the water crisis at the moment. Clubs and schools are looking for other sporting activities for their players to maintain their fitness. Also I’d say South Africa is finally realising there is a much greater need for the development of

football compared to global leading football nations like Brazil, Colombia, Spain and Portugal. Futsal at a young age improves all aspect of the athlete’s development needed at a national and international level,” says Benjamin.

The club currently has one senior squad of fifteen players and they are working towards their goal of an additional senior team and five junior teams. Falcons recently competed in a tournament and narrowly lost 7-5 in the final against Back2Basics.

“Although we didn’t win the tournament, the day was successful for us as two of our junior players, Jayden Schoor and Wesley Bosch, were selected for the provincial u.20 trials to compete for their spot in the South African national team, and Wesley Bosch was awarded as top goal scorer (10 goals) of the tournament,” says Benjamin.

This bodes well for a club that is still growing, and the fact that they are already producing young stars is testament to a bright future.
