FISANTEKRAAL ANIMAL WELFARE: OPENS FIRST CLINIC IN PROPER BUILDING
FAW reaches milestone ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme
E
ighteen years ago a resident of Durbanville started to transport sick animals from Fisantekraal in her own car to vets for medical treatment. This seed of goodwill grew over the years and reached a milestone on Saturday 27 October when Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) officially opened its very first clinic in a proper building – complete with two con-
sulting rooms, a surgery, a waiting room and a kitchenette. FAW, which has been helping the animals of the impoverished areas of Fisantekraal and surrounds since 2005, was founded after Rosa Pheiffer, who took her houseworker home one afternoon, was shocked to see many animals wandering the streets in an awful state – neglect, starvation and illness were rife. She passed a dog convulsing in the dirt. She contacted the Animal Welfare Society in Philippi. The dog had end-stage canine
distemper and, although he had to be put to sleep, he was the catalyst for major change in Fisantekraal, according to the FAW website. A week later Rosa returned to the township, where she saw a badly mange-infested dog. She took to spending every weekend in the township, helping the thousands of suffering animals. Initially, there were no real premises, until a shipping container was donated in May 2006, the same year FAW became an official non-profit organisation. Dogs were bathed
and dipped under a beach umbrella in a plastic tub; a mobile clinic from AACL or PDSA helped with vaccinations and sterilisations. Two more containers arrived, as well as two vans. Later, a dedicated bathing container with running water, a solar water heater and two baths allowed for many dogs to be treated for fleas, ticks and mange. A treatment room provided basic medical care. A food container was also opened to provide food and animal accessories. V To page 3.
