AUTISM AWARENESS: HOME PROMOTES ADVANCED TECHNIQUES TO HELP AUTISM SUFFERERS
De Gendel Home a haven CARINA ROUX
A
s April is Autism Awareness Month, TygerBurger visited the De Grendel Home for Autism in Panorama last week. Currently they have four children attending school at the home, but could add four more for a class of eight, says Andelene Thysse of the home. They accept children aged between four and 12. They use a curriculum developed by educational psychologist Dr Lyn Thijsse, known as the Eureka Learning System
(ELS), which is an individual-oriented programme. Thysse says they will vacate the current premises soon and are on the lookout for another home, preferably in the Panorama area. They are also looking at establishing a home in Hopefield to accommodate people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) from age 15 and up. She says they want to incorporate a lifelong support concept whereby parents can buy a room for life so they would not have to suddenly, when their child turns 18, won-
der where to go. She says this would be ideal as many people with ASD will always need some sort of assisted living. Currently the staff at the home (in Panorama) consists of a qualified teacher, an occupational therapist, an event manager/fundraiser and a few carers. Thysse says as it is Autism Awareness Month, she extends an invitation to parents who might be in need of support as they now also have a full-time social worker available. Last year TygerBurger reported on the use of stem cell therapy (SCT) for ASD (“Is there
hope for autism?”, 26/04/2017) in which we referred to Jamaine, a young boy from Botswana based at De Grendel, who underwent SCT for the first time. The SCT is performed at the NeuroGen (Brain and Spine Institute) in Mumbai, India and makes use of autologous stem cells, which come from the patient’s own body, which are then separated in a lab and reinjected. Thysse says Jamaine had his second SCT at the end of February and they have seen more improvement in his behaviour since. V To page 2.
