DETERMINATION: WOMAN REACHING HER MARATHON GOALS
Woman ‘runs for her life’ CARINA ROUX
promised myself I would start looking after myself so that my children can grow up with a mother,” she says. In January last year the staff at Bothasig police started a weight loss challenge. At the start of the 12-week “biggest loser” challenge Cheryl weighed in at 107kg. With a lot of motivation from her colleagues, she soon forced herself to join a gym. “Never had I even seen the inside of a gym before.” She lost 8kg during the challenge and for the first time started thinking it would be possible to do a 5km fun run. She entered the Spar Ladies’ 5km in April last year. “I completed it in over an hour and held my medal with pride as if I had just won the lottery,” she recalls. She posted her journey on Facebook and in a tweet asked: “What if it is possible to run the 21km Two Oceans for once in my life?” In response the management of Run/Walk for Life contacted her and offered a year’s membership to assist in this goal. “I was over the moon, but also sceptical as I knew my condition wouldn’t always allow me to run,” she says. In June she attended her first practice session with coach Paul Kelly at the Run/Walk for Life Table View branch. She started setting herself new goals and by August lined up for her first 10km race in Pinelands. “I cried my way through the race, as I never thought this would be possible. I completed my first 10km in just over an hour.” This was followed by a 15km race and her first half marathon in October.” Every time she reached one goal she would set another and recently, on 4 March, she completed her first 30km race. he is determined to run her first marathon before the age of 40 – brittle bones or not – says Cheryl Green (39), who recently became a brand ambassador for Run/ Walk for Life and Asics. Cheryl, who is a clerk at Bothasig Police Station and lives with her family in Table View, is by no means a seasoned runner, but she does have a story to tell. She says she used to suffer from depression and was diagnosed with an inherited disorder, osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as brittle bone disease, about six years ago. At first she did not tell anyone, not even her family, as she did not want people to feel sorry for her, she says. She had to undergo a few surgical procedures due to this condition. In 2013 her family was faced by the suicide of her father-in-law, which led her deeper into depression. Then one day in 2016 as she was looking to get to McDonald’s to feed an emotional hunger, she “by fate” found herself at one of the larger running events in Cape Town, the Gun Run. “It looked like fun,” she says. Surrounded by runners she pondered whether she would ever be able to complete such a run. Within that next week, in October 2016, she decided to go for a run around the block. She managed about 400m before her body could no longer take the strain. She ended up on crutches due to a jumper’s knee and because of her weight, she says. Reality struck when the doctor told her she would be facing a depression clinic soon and a wheelchair by the age of 40. “That day I
