onte Vista and Edgemead residents would have noticed work being done alongside Montague Road and Edgemead Drive recently. This is part of a TDA (Transport and Urban Development Authority) project of approximately R52 m that will be done over a two-year period. A sign on the corner of Monte Vista Boulevard and Montague Road alerts motorists to “The Construction of Non-Motorised Transport

Facilities in the Edgemead Area”.

One very alert resident, Kelvin Irvine, who is also chairperson of the Monte Vista Ratepayers’ Association (MVRA) Parks Committee, noticed poles going up next to Monte Vista Boulevard a few weeks ago. He made some enquiries and posted the news about the planned Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) developments on the MVRA Facebook page. Irvine mentioned the project would include new dual-purpose pavements for walking and cycling, replacing damaged

sidewalks, with some new ones where there are none, new stormwater pipes in certain areas and MyCiTi feeder bus lanes. He also heard that the project has been in planning for six years. Irvine said he and Cheryl Visser, ward 1 councillor, were well received and briefed by the engineers and consulting firm. He said an open house will be held at some point where all will be presented to the community and people will be able to ask questions.

but he said he would prefer not to comment or give any details as he is not a City official.

Irvine will work closely with the developers going forward.

Annamarie Vercueil, a Monte Vista resident, has been appointed to act as a community liaison officer (CLO). She will keep the community informed and updated on progress made by the construction company, Shar Civils CC, and will be the spokesperson for the community.

TygerBurger was informed that a formal media release from the TDA is in progress, which should provide more details of the planned developments.

In light of this, most of the role-players were hesitant to speak to the media. TygerBurger was told that the role-players get along well and there is a willingness to take note of inputs and make adjustments as required.

Plans are apparently not set in stone and the input of the community is valued and taken into consideration.

Judging from feedback on the MVRA Facebook page, the community in general seems to be appreciative of and positive about the project.

Riana de Wet, secretary of the MVRA, said they heard the development of NonMotorised Transport facilities for the area have been in the making for several years, but as it was never discussed with any of the residents, it came as a complete surprise to them.

“After careful investigation of the project we are happy with the proposals.

“Without knowing this was in the pipeline, our parks subcommittee had a similar idea on their wish-list, so we are open to the project, to the benefit of our residents.”

The development forms part of the TDA’s Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan of 2018-2023, which is available online.

NMT (Non-Motorised Transport) includes walking and cycling as this is regarded by the City as an important mode of transport within the transport network.

On 7 June Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport and urban development, announced that the City will invest R481m over the next three years to assist with traffic congestion. He said they want to improve mobility in Cape Town, “be it by cycling, car, minibus taxi, bus or train”.

According to Herron over 500 000 Capetonians cannot afford motorised transport, and either walk or cycle to their destinations.

“Thus, we will keep on expanding the network of safe sidewalks and cycle lanes with the non-motorised transport funding we receive from the national government.”

pine pitch canker is a virulent and incurable fungal disease of pine trees caused by the fungus Fusarium circinatum, which is transmitted by the deodar weevil (beetle), Pissodes nemorensis. It is reported that this disease has affected pine trees in America and is now affecting trees all over the Western Cape.

Many of the pines at Tygerberg Nature Reserve have died or been felled as they are deemed unsafe. Infected trees exhibit numerous symptoms including the appearance of canker – small areas of dead tissue that grow slowly, often over a period of years.

Additional symptoms include discolouration on the branches, trunk and exposed roots. The fungus most noticeably affects branches from the tips down, turning needles brown, and creates a flow of amber pitch that runs down the trunk. According to the pamphlet it is reported that pine pitch canker cannot be eradicated.

Herron says given the effect of the fungus on the trees, they pose a safety risk to visitors as branches are prone to breaking, and they are also a fire risk. “Pinus radiata, which was planted in the Tygerberg Nature

resident of Plattekloof recently contacted TygerBurger after she noticed a copse of trees on the rim of Tygerberg Hill being cut down.

Wiebke Lusted, who has been living in the area for 20 years, says it was the last copse of trees nearest to the N1 highway. She called Tygerberg Nature Reserve and was told all the trees will be removed as they are not indigenous. “The trees have been there for as long as I can remember and add to the attraction of the reserve. I can see them from my garden and love them. It is hard to understand why we have to destroy something, just because it does not ‘fit in’ ... surely, one can and should compromise.” she said.

Lusted also sent an email to Tshepo Mamabolo, biodiversity area manager of the City of Cape Town, who she was told is in charge. When TygerBurger phoned Lusted, she said Mamabolo had already responded and explained “the trees are not indigenous, a fire hazard and have a fungus which means that strong winds break branches off which then fall onto the picnic area.” Jokingly Lusted said she even asked whether chaining herself to a tree would deter them, but apparently it is a “done deal”.

TygerBurger made an enquiry to the City about the removal of the trees. Brett Herron, the City’s Mayco member for transport and urban development, confirmed the pine trees are being removed as part of a gradual process that started in 2009.

Herron says up to 20 trees remain in the picnic area of Tygerberg Reserve which will be removed over time.

“The reserve has sections that are infested by alien pine and eucalyptus trees that will require a large budget to remove. We are still in the process of obtaining funding for this exercise.”

According to a pamphlet from the City,

Reserve, is highly invasive, with its seeds being dispersed by wind, especially after fires. Unless the areas where they grow have been demarcated and a permit obtained for cultivating them, their presence can be interpreted as illegal.” The Radiata pine is just one of a few pine species listed under CARA (Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act, 1983) as “invader” alien species. Herron says pine species that are grown commercially have been given a “category 2” status under CARA. This means they may only be cultivated in a demarcated area that has been issued with a permit.

Herron says it is inappropriate to grow invasive alien species within a nature reserve, “especially where the natural vegetation being conserved is critically endangered, as is the case with Tygerberg’s Swartland Shale Renosterveld.” Ideally these trees should be cleared and the areas rehabilitated to natural vegetation, he says. “‘If any of the trees merit heritage status, then retaining them would require demarcation and a permit to retain them.” Pines have a limited lifespan and when they become moribund or a danger to the public, they need to be cleared, he says.

TygerBurger asked whether other (indigenous) trees will be planted in the reserve.

Herron says as part of the restoration of the nature reserve they are embarking on passive and active restoration. “By passive we mean we allow time for natural vegetation to grow back naturally.”

Active restoration is implemented in areas that are heavily infested with alien trees and where indigenous vegetation is threatened and in need of restoration because it will be lost if no intervention is taken, he says. “We actively conserve critically endangered Swartland Shale Renosterveld – with less than 3% conserved, we cannot afford to lose this to alien vegetation,” says Herron.

The police have been able to arrest a suspect in connection with an alleged theft in the Welgemoed area, thanks to an extensive security camera network that covers a large part of the northern suburbs.

This is the latest in a series of arrests that have been made possible as a result of these cameras.

It is alleged that an unidentified suspect entered a property in Poussion Street in early September, and stole a gas tank out of a garage.

“One of our operators who was monitoring the Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras in the area noticed what was happening and also saw that the vehicle in question had number plates that did not match,” says Verena Hulme, district manager (Cape Town North) at Fidelity ADT. At the end of September, two police of-

ficers approached the team for assistance with a suspicious-looking vehicle they were investigating. The vehicle in question was reported driving around the Welgemoed area.

LPR cameras in this area were installed by Welgemoed Safe and are monitored by Fidelity ADT. “Our operator was able to locate the footage of the earlier gas tank incident, and it was soon established that this was the same vehicle which the police had been asking about,” says Hulme.

This vehicle was tracked down a few days later and the driver arrested after allegedly admitting to the theft of the gas tank. “This story shows how modern technology is making a massive difference in the fight against crime. If you see anything suspicious in your suburb, please raise the alarm immediately,” Hulme says.

Police, residents work together A

possible crime was averted last weekend due to the great relationship enjoyed by Bothasig police and the residents of Richwood. Jacques Mostert, spokesperson for Bothasig police, says according to Glenn Marais, Richwood Neighbourhood Watch (RNW) chairperson, members of the RNW were informed on Saturday 27 October that a resident had been alerted to someone fiddling with their garage door, and another reported someone looking over their boundary wall.

This information was immediately relayed to the neighbourhood watch patrollers and the local police patrolling vehicle.

According to Warrant Officer Dean Newman, he and his colleague Constable Bulelwa Luthuli received information about suspicious behaviour in Richwood.

As garage burglaries have recently shown an increase the officers immediately responded to patrol the area.

At about 02:00, while on patrol assisted by RNW patrollers, the two officers noticed a man walking who immediately changed direction when he saw the police vehicle.

The officers approached the man and searched him. He was found to be in possession of housebreaking implements and arrested.

The 21-year-old man from Dunoon appeared in the Goodwood Court on Monday 29 October.

Mostert says residents in the Bothasig precinct should be aware of an increase in garage break-ins. Areas standing out are Richwood and Edgemead. If possible, lock garage doors from the inside using a deadbolt or ensure that the garage is covered by the alarm system.

Be aware of people lurking around and immediately inform the local police. Better still, also become a member of your local neighbourhood watch, says Mostert.

Cops guilty of corruption Two former police officers who were stationed at Bothasig police were sentenced for corruption, theft and defeating the administration of justice, last week.

Captain FC Van Wyk, provincial police spokesperson, said in a statement corruption has no place in the police and they will ensure that perpetrators within their own ranks are prosecuted. Sergeant Zandisile Ruka (38) and Constable Thulile Ruka (35) were arrested by members of the Western Cape Anti-Corruption Unit while attending an on-duty parade on 12 April last year. The

two detectives were responsible for investigating a theft case. They managed to trace the suspect and recovered R45 000 in cash but failed to arrest the suspect and kept the money for themselves. They recorded in the docket that the suspect could not be traced and the docket was closed accordingly.

They have to repay the complainant in the theft case the amount of R45 000. Both officers were dismissed from the police service during a disciplinary hearing. They were sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, suspended for five years.

Bicycles of R40 000 stolen LISA LOTTERING @demi_lisa A resident of Ostersee had a rough start to his morning when his usual cycling routine took a turn for the worse on Saturday 20 October According to Basheer Omardien, both his and his brother’s bicycles were stolen less than 100m from De Tyger Primary School at about 05:45. The two bicycles are valued at R40 000.

The 31-year-old says he noticed a white Volkswagen Golf with four men in the car when they started their usual route.

“I saw the car in the neighbourhood and while I was riding my bike, I felt something against my leg,” he says.

He says the car brushed against his leg and

knocked him off his bike. “Two of the suspects were pacing up and down and they said they had too much to drink. The one pulled a knife out and I pushed the bike towards him.”

“The suspects drove off with our bicycles and we immediately went home and got into our vehicles.”

Omardien says they immediately called the police and reported the matter and the police told them to follow the car.

“We followed them and they headed in the direction of Ravensmead/Cravenby, but eventually they managed to get away and we were also a bit frightened because we are not police officers, we are just civilians,” he says.

“I am really disappointed that this happened because this is one of the safer areas,” he says.

Mazda CX-3 gets a boost WILMER MÜLLER

S

outh Africa’s most stylish compact SUV has recently been injected with some Botox! A few months ago Mazda gave its popular CX-3 crossover, which TygerBurger just tested, a midlife facelift – not that it needed one, as it is one of the best looking cars in its segment.

However, Mazda didn’t mess too much with the CX-3’s winning design, but the subtle changes give it a more premium appearance. The CX-3’s main rivals include the Renault Captur, Nissan Juke and Opel Crossland.

Styling improvements include the front fog lamp bezel colour change to black, snazzy 18inch alloy wheels and the Mazda grill refined to consist of fewer, more pronounced lines.

Our test car, the Individual Plus derivative, was powered by Mazda’s fuel-efficient 2.0-litre petrol engine with 115kW of power and 206Nm of torque, and it was paired with an automatic transmission. Though not quite as refined as turbocharged engines, it does a good job in the CX-3 and it is quite willing too.

Overall the CX-3 comes with plenty of standard features such as leather seats, cruise control, a multimedia system with Bluetooth connectivity and a multifunction steering wheel with audio controls and smart keyless entry. There are also niceties such as rearview cameras and daytime running lights.

On the safety front there are six airbags ABS brakes, and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with an integrated Traction Control System (TCS). Prices for the CX-3 start at R299 400.

Tygerberg Hospital honours nursing staff LISA LOTTERING

Keith Cloete, COO of Tygerberg Hospital, said it’s a humbling experience to be in the presence of those who treat people. Cloete acknowledged the tremendous impact the nursing staff has on the heath of the Western Cape. Currently, Tygerberg Hospital has about 2000 nurses, the most in the Western Cape. “The impact you [nurses] have is innumerable,” he said.

“Many cases go unnoticed and the multiple acts of kindness and influence on people’s lives mostly go unnoticed and even though we don’t shine a spotlight on that, it’s the difference we make that matters most,” he said. Cloete said he believes the hospital has individuals who care and want to make a difference and need to work in teams that need to be part of a system.

“We should recognise individuals, but let’s also remember the system behind the individuals.”

Cloete said the highlight of the year is to award excellence, promote nursing, and recognise hard work and dedication towards quality health care.

ygerberg Hospital hosted its 29th Hartman Memorial Lecture awards ceremony on Wednesday 24 October. The hospital awarded 72 nursing staff for their clinical excellence throughout the year.

The candidates were selected according to strict clinical criteria and three winners were announced from each nursing module (Professional Nurse, Enrolled Nurse, and Enrolled Nurse Auxiliary).

Health minister, Nomafrench Mbombo, said nurses are the backbone of the health system.

Mbombo said being a nurse is not just a job, but a vocation. “It requires the most meticulous and unflinching commitment to excellence and service. It requires people who are passionate about the patients that we serve. These people are the nurses we are recognising for their excellence.”

Mbombo commended all the nursing staff for their dedication this past year and congratulated the nominees in this year’s Hart-

roject Seeds4Life, driven by 2Feet4TB and in partnership with Spin 4 Charity, worked with the “Natuurtiere” from Tygerberg High School.

The Landsdiens garden group assisted with sponsors, new planting styles and even how to be more water wise.

Anthony van Rhyn assisted learners and showed them how to maintain a garden’s moisture.

The garden group planted beetroot, onions, cabbage and lettuce and when ready to harvest, the produce will be given to disadvantaged families at the school.

The Landsdiens garden group would like to thank Neal Stacey, founder and TB survivor of 2Feet4TB, Anthony van Rhyn, Trident Jute Products, Atlantic Fertilisers and Shadowlands Nursery for their support in growing the seedlings.

Rassie moet kundiges begin inspan Met die oog op volgende jaar se Wêreldbekerrugbytoernooi in Japan, wil ek ’n paar voorstelle aan Rassie Erasmus, Springbok-afrigter, maak.

En nee, ek wil my nie oor sy spankeuses uitlaat nie. Ek kry in elk geval die indruk dat hy op sy gelukkigste sal wees as die Bokspan uit nét huidige of gewese WP-spelers bestaan. Maar dit daar gelaat.

Rassie het die Bokke immers uit die modder laat opstaan – en dit sonder die flitsende ligte op die stadion se dak waarmee hy die Cheetahs destyds die Curriebeker laat wen het.

Waar Rassie egter met heelwat groter kundigheid kan doen, is in sy bestuursen afrigtingspan.

Suid-Afrika is geseën met van die mees skeppende breine op hierdie aardbol, wat Rassie met groot vrug kan inspan.

Dit is bekend dat ons losvoorspelers nie die vermoë het om balle in die losgemale te steel nie. Hulle het ook nie die kuns bemeester om (sonder dat die ref dit sien) die bal onwederregtelik te steel nie – soos die All Blacks dit al jare lank doen en daarmee wegkom.

Daarom stel ek voor Rassie betrek kundiges soos Ace (Pierneef) Magashula en Floyd (VBS) Shivanga om die spelers in dié verband op te lei.

Hulle weet na bewering hoe om goed wat nie aan hulle behoort nie, vir hulself toe te eien – en dit sonder dat die gereg ’n vinger op hulle lê.

Hoewel Jacob (Brandpoel) Zuma ook as balsteeladviseur sou kon optree, kan hy op ’n ander gebied groter waarde toevoeg.

Want as die uitgeslape Juju die teenstanders kan indoktrineer met die beginsel van balonteiening sonder vergoeding, draf die Bokke al die ander spanne met rekordtellings kaf.

Time for City to come clean It is time for the City to come clean and tell us exactly what is happening with the electric buses it has on order and other problems relating to the purchase of new bus chassis.

We know that these deals have been investigated by the Hawks and Council’s own forensic experts. We also know that there are supposed to be disciplinary proceedings against the council commissioner of the Transport and Urban Development Authority, Melissa Whitehead, but we have no idea of the outcomes.

All these investigations and legal fees must be costing a small fortune.

There are also further questions that require answers. We know that the City accepted a tender for ten 12m electric buses made by the Chinese firm BYD. The buses, according to the City Council media release, were supposed to be in operation by June last year.

So where are we? When will the buses be on the streets and how much will they finally cost? And for how much longer will the City continue paying someone R3m a year to sit at home? It is a mess and at the very least we need an update and evidence of a sense of urgency in dealing with this.

Response by the City of Cape Town We can only take delivery of the buses on conclusion of the current ongoing investigation, and pending the outcome thereof. The investi-

gation is expected to be finalised before the end of the year. The Council-approved disciplinary process of Melissa Whitehead is ongoing.

As with all Council-approved investigations, this process is independent and must be permitted to run its course.

The City will communicate the outcome once the proceedings have been concluded.

Dan moet duisende skole se slaag- of druipsyfer binne enkele dae ná die voltooiing van puntelyste, skedules en tracking records, voltooi word.

Dit sluit in alle bewyse van wat daar gedoen is om leerders te help in hoofstroom- en hulpklasse. Die administrasie rondom hierdie dokumente is uiters belangrik en moet noukeurig voltooi word.

Ek sal graag die leser se kommentaar wil hoor wanneer die “graad vyfie” in die hoërskool is en tydig en ontydig by die skool moet wees vir vraestelle. Dit is ’n nagmerrie om self skool te hou (ek het intussen afgetree) en nog drie kinders se vervoerreëlings tussen twee verskillende skole tydens

First, thanks for a great informative issue.

I was delighted to see the speeding issues being highlighted, which are taking place on Giel Basson Drive and Plattekloof Road. Giel Basson, being a fairly new road, is a nightmare on Friday and Saturday nights.

These maniacs have no respect for sleeping residents.

I have often wondered what to do and who to call.

May I suggest speed bumps between Rothchild Boulevard and Bosmansdam Road on Giel Basson Drive? It is the only way to stop these speed junkies killing innocents.

They have no regard for others, red robots or stop signs! The Ghost Squad can’t be present all the time. Speed bumps can.

Car guards are people, just like us I have observed that there is a lot of fuss about car guards who “expect to receive money for doing nothing” (“Verdien karwagte regtig ’n fooi?”

24/10.) And to be honest, it

does sometimes seem that they are just standing there being nothing but “glorified” beggars. Yet, there is another way to look at their situation.

Theirs is actually a noble job. They scratch out a living from watching other people’s cars. They stand and watch our cars in wind and weather whilst we shop blissfully in an area that has climate control. And no, they are not policemen, traffic cops, or people from insurance companies that watch every car and take notes about the whereabouts of other people using the parking area. We can’t hold these men responsible for other inconsiderate people scratching our cars. It would be the same as blaming a baker for a mistake made by a butcher.

Many of them come from the central regions of Africa to look for a better living in a better country than their own. They have little or almost no money to feed themselves, let alone their wives and children or families back home. They could turn to robbery, but they don’t. They could become gangsters, but they don’t.

They could earn lots of money by exploiting many different vices, but they don’t.

Instead, they choose an honest living, although it isn’t a pleasant one, so that they do the right thing.

What if I were this person, struggling to provide for my family in an economically shattered environment, wouldn’t I be thankful if someone who just went and spent their money on food that I wish I could buy, gave me R5 for ensuring that someone didn’t break into their car and steal it? What if that person was your son, or husband, trying to provide for you?

Remember car guards are people, just like us.

ast Wednesday (24 October) Brohnsonn and Christine Winslow flew from Johannesburg to Cape Town for the day with their son, Jason (12), for a very special handover in Goodwood.

Jason has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and is wheelchair-bound since he lost the ability to walk a year and a half ago.

Brohnsonn explains DMD is a genetic disorder for which there is no cure yet. “The protein we have in our body to build and repair muscle, dystrophin, they don’t have that. It is a muscle-wasting disease.”

He says it starts with the skeletal muscles losing the ability to function properly. The heart (a muscle) also gets affected and Jason is on heart medication. Problems with the heart and lungs end up being fatal, says Brohnsonn. Some DMD sufferers make it to their 20s but they rarely live to 30. “It is 100% fatal. We choose to look at the positives all the time,” he says. “But it is hard … and hard work.”

TygerBurger met the Winslows at Solutions Medical and Rehabilitation Suppliers in Goodwood where we were welcomed by owner Marius van Rensburg and representatives of the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation (MDSA) Cape branch – Win van Berg (chairperson) and Vanessa Jordaan (general manager). The Winslows came to Cape Town so that Jason could hand over a wheelchair to another boy affected by DMD. Christine explains Jason has his own Facebook page, “Jason’s Journey with Duchenne”, through which they raise awareness about DMD. Leading up to World Duchenne Awareness Day on 7 September, Jason made a request for people to post photos with red balloons. Marius was so impressed by this awareness campaign that he posted a pledge to donate a wheelchair.

Christine says Solutions offered to courier the chair to Johannesburg, but they decided to “keep it local” and contacted MDSA Cape to help find a candidate for the chair in Cape Town. Through the recommendation of a social worker at Paarl School in Brackenfell, the decision was made to donate the chair to one of the school’s learners, Abubakar Jawa (13) from Durbanville.

PHOTO: CARINA ROUX Aisha Jawa says when Abu was about 18 months old she knew something was not quite right, but the doctors did not know what it was. At age five Abu was diagnosed as autistic. At age eight Abu showed muscle weakness and was diagnosed with DMD after Aisha took him to Professor Johannes Schoeman, paediatric neurologist at Tygerberg Hospital.

After the diagnosis they were referred to the Muscle Disorder Clinic at Red Cross Children’s Hospital, says Aisha. Abu likes to play, enjoys nature, has an interest in geography and is curious, says his mother. ‘‘His teacher always says, ‘he’s her news presenter’.” Aisha says there is a need to raise awareness about Duchenne – also in her country of birth. She says the new chair is much easier to handle as it is lighter and better suited to Abu’s body. Marius ensured all necessary measurements were taken beforehand to make sure it’s a good fit.

Aisha admits things are not always easy. Courage is required, but “God would not have given her something that she is not able to handle,’’ she says.

Jason was only diagnosed when he was six years old. Brohnsonn says they were living in the Seychelles at the time where they still have a business.

“The doctors saw all the key identifiers, but failed to diagnose it.” They made a decision to move back to SA in 2013 as it was difficult for Jason to get around.

Christine says many times there will be delays in early developmental milestones such as sitting, walking and talking.

Speech delay and/or the inability to keep up with peers will often be the first signs of DMD. Symptoms to look for include: . Gower’s Manoeuvre: needs help getting up from the floor, or walks hands up legs in order to stand; . Has a hard time lifting the head or has a weak neck; . Is not walking by 15 months; . Has a hard time walking, running or climbing stairs; . Not speaking as well as other children their age; . Walks with legs apart.

Unit deployed to help protect rail commuters The 100 officers that form part of the much-anticipated Rail Enforcement Unit were officially deployed on the morning of Monday 29 October.

This dedicated enforcement unit is to focus on the safety and security of Metrorail commuters and infrastructure.

The Rail Enforcement Unit will assist the existing security services with the challenges the Metrorail service is currently facing, including sustained attacks on the rail infrastructure and assets, the sabotage of the urban rail network, and the safety of commuters and rail employees. The formation of the dedicated unit follows on from a memorandum of agreement between the City of Cape Town, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) and the Western Cape Government in May 2018, whereby each of the three stakeholders committed to jointly fund the R47.9m needed to establish and operate the unit for a period of 12 months.

“Passenger rail is the most efficient and affordable form of public transport. Here in Cape Town, hundreds of thousands of low-income residents rely on the trains to get to work and school. It is our duty and responsibility to ensure commuters’ safety; and secondly, we must do all we can to protect and stabilise the service.

“Public transport must enable commuters to get to work on time, and to do so without being concerned about their safety,” says Mayco member for transport and urban development, Brett Herron.

The officers were recruited by the City, and have undergone extensive training over the past few months.

“This initiative is indicative of how serious we are about commuter safety, as well as our commitment to returning stability to the rail network. However, no initiative is complete without the buy-in and assistance of the public. We therefore call on rail commuters and the public at large to do their bit by reporting criminal acts and sharing intelligence to help bring those responsible for the ongoing acts of destruction and sabotage to book,” adds Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith.

“The future economic success of this region depends heavily on a stable and sustainable rail network. Having visited the officers while they were on training last month, I believe that the work we have put into this pilot project to increase Metrorail’s security contingent is a necessary step towards improving passenger rail functionality and effectiveness,” says Western Cape MEC for transport and public works, Donald Grant.

Renew licences before holiday season The City of Cape Town encourages residents who are due to renew their vehicle licences in November and December to do so sooner rather than later as higher volumes are normally experienced the closer it gets to the December holidays.

Residents can also apply for a renewal online.

According to a media statement the City implemented the first queuing system (ticketing system) in the motor vehicle renewal and licensing section in the Civic Centre in February this year.

The City is in the process of rolling this system out to other contact centres and it is hoped that this will reduce customer discomfort over the busy period ahead.

Johan van der Merwe, Mayco member for finance, says they will have measures in place to deal with the high volumes but resi-

dents should still expect longer waiting periods during this time.

“Residents are reminded that they can also renew their licence discs online.”

As online licence application can take around 14 days from the date of application to receiving it in the post, residents must act in a timely fashion.

Residents must take along their proof of address when renewing their motor vehicle licences annually as it is a national government requirement.

It is very important for customers to have all of the required documentation with them when they apply for licence disc renewals to prevent any additional delays.

Card payment facilities are available for vehicle licence disc renewals at all the motor vehicle licensing offices.

Terwyl ek lees, het ek besef die storie is authentic en kom uit ’n plek van waarheid. Ek het besef ek moet deel hiervan wees,” sê Van Rooy.

Van Rooy sê in haar ervaring word ’n goeie storie geskryf en dit sal vir ewig tersaaklik bly. “Kinnes is een van daardie werke wat nog vir baie jare by gehore aanklank gaan vind.

“Hier dink ek aan stories soos Fiela se kind. Rhys is ’n belangrike nuwe stem in die teater en hy sal nog baie goeie werk lewer.

“By die Universiteit van Kaapstad, waar ek klas gee, het van die studente Kinnes vir hul eksamen gekies,” sê Van Rooy.

ne of the deciding factors that determine whether your child will gain admission to a school is your residential address. So it’s not difficult to understand why good parents factor the needs of their children into their purchasing decisions.

But exactly how much influence are children having on their parents’ purchasing decisions?

“There is no doubt that children play a vital role in the home-buying decision, and rightly so. At the very least, buyers usually consider areas which are close to good schools.

Beyond this, buyers with children also place less value on certain features they once thought important before they had children. For example, whether a home has scenic views becomes less important provided the home is in the correct suburb,” says Adrian Goslett, regional director and CEO of RE/MAX Southern Africa, Global studies have shown that millennial parents are placing increased value on their children when it comes to making purchases. A recent poll conducted in the US revealed that 55% of homeowners with a child under 18 said the opinion of their child played a factor in their home-buying decision.

For millennial parents, the influence grows to nearly 75%. A Nigerian study conducted by Research Leap in 2015 revealed that most parents make purchasing decisions with their children at the centre of their choices.

“The only word of caution I would issue to millennial parents is not to allow themselves to be too heavily influenced by their children’s wants when considering which property to purchase.

“While it is important to consider your child’s needs, their preferences can change weekly and you’re going to be paying off your home loan for the next 20 to 30 years,” Goslett advises.

As a result of parents factoring their purchasing decisions around their children, when searching for homes, buyers with children often tend to factor their wish-list around the number of rooms as opposed to the finishes and features of a home.

According to a study conducted in Potchefstroom in 2016, the features of a home

which buyers rated most important varied vastly depending on whether buyers had children or not. The results revealed that families with children shared an emphasis on the number of bedrooms, quality of the kitchen, and the number of bathrooms a home had. For couples without children and single buyers, the focus was on security systems, the appearance of the house, quality of built-in cupboards, and the size of the garage and parking space.

“Unsurprisingly, the needs of a buyer with children will differ from the needs of a buyer without. However it is interesting to see which features become less important to buyers when they have children. My advice to parents is to consider both the immediate and long-term needs of their family when purchasing property. For example, while parking space might not be an issue when your children are young, it can become an issue when your children turn 18 and purchase cars of their own,” Goslett concludes.

There are two momentous occasions that Courteney remembers fondly and both happened fairly recently. “In 2017, after seven years of competing against Stellenberg High at the championship play-offs, our u.19A team finally managed to beat Stellenberg in a nail-biting final with a score of 27-25 under the leadership of our coaches, Dalene Louw and Janine From left are George McNulty (Bosman, McNulty and Du Toit Bresler. hard work and dedication truly paid off in those two moments and that is why these two achievements are so memorable to me,” says Courteney.

Courteney knows where she is going in life and has set plans for the future. When it comes to her studies she is going to study either a BA in Humanities or a BCom in Financial Accounting. It is also her dream to represent South Africa on the international stage and to play for a club in the Australian Suncorp Super Netball League.

Courteney is an avid follower of international players and a few names come to mind, including a former teammate. “Even though she is a shooter, I look up to the New Zealand goal attack, Maria Tutaia, as well as the Australian defender, Courtney Bruce, and my former teammate Amber Petoors.

Their resilience and work ethic is truly phenomenal and it inspires me to do my best and most of all enjoy the game.

“I would like to thank TygerBurger for affording me this opportunity to share my story and love of this wonderful game. I would like to thank all my coaches over the years, my teammates and friends, and lastly my parents for their constant motivation and support,” says Courteney.
