TYGERDAL & GLENWOOD NHW: WINS TOP AWARD FOR INNOVATION

NHW sets the bar high CARINA ROUX

T

he Tygerdal and Glenwood Neighbourhood Watch (TAGNHW) won two awards at the Neighbourhood Watch Awards held on Monday 26 March. The awards, hosted jointly by the City of Cape Town (CCT) and the Western Cape Government’s Department of Community Safety (Docs), honoured outstanding performance by accredited neighbourhood watches (NHWs) and their members.

Table View NHW came out on top as “NHW of the Year”, ahead of Summer Greens NHW and Tygerdal and Glenwood NHW, which took second and third place respectively. The awards saw more than 80 NHW structures and members nominated for one of the 34 available awards split into three broad categories to recognise and celebrate teams of distinction (bronze awards), individual excellence (silver awards), as well as outstanding achievement (gold awards). Tyger-

dal and Glenwood NHW also received the Most Innovative Award (Gold) in recognition of innovative, progressive, smart and integrated use of technology towards community safety. Clinton Roux, chairperson of TAGNHW, says they have a very strong dedicated team that goes the extra mile “all the time and on all levels”. “As our motto states, ‘in unity there is strength’.” Eugene Nourse, TAGNHW deputy chairperson, says the innovation award speaks to how they communicate with the

community. “We use various platforms to educate with regard to safety and the fight against crime. We also use these platforms to give the community a line of communication to us the NHW, should they require assistance or purely see something suspicious – from WhatsApp, Facebook and Zello to pamphlet drops.” JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security, thanked the NHW members for their dedicated community service.
