TYGERBERG POLICE CLUSTER: OFFICERS RECOGNISED FOR SERVICE
Parade honours police CARINA ROUX
P
olice officers from the Tygerberg police cluster, which includes Goodwood and Bothasig, were recognised for their service at a medal parade held at the Goodwood Civic Centre on Wednesday 11 April. Around 40 police officers received 20- or 30-year long-service medals, recognising their devotion under often challenging circumstances. A number of officers also received the Centenary Medal, which was in-
stituted to celebrate the South African Police Service’s 100 years of existence in 2013. This medal is awarded for “irreproachable character, exemplary conduct or for outstanding service rendered to the police”. The sadness was tangible when the family members of three officers who had passed away in the last year accepted their medals and a bouquet of flowers from cluster commander, Major General Moses Memela. Among them was Lynette Abrahams, wife of the late Captain Anton Abrahams from Goodwood Detectives who died of a heart at-
tack in July last year. Three officers from Goodwood police, Captain Trevor Dickenson (20 and 30 years), Warrant Officer Johannes Smit (30 years) and Warrant Officer Jakobus Swart (20 years), were honoured. The three officers say they are proud of this achievement and to be part of the medal parade. Dickenson says his family and neighbours are so proud of him, his phone has not stopped ringing. Smith says this is one of the highlights of his long career and he will cherish it for life. Colonel Sibusisu Mntambo, Goodwood
station commander, commended the officers on their long careers and thanked them for their loyalty and hard work. In his message at the parade, Reverend Captain Norman Mdau thanked the police officers for their dedication and service. He said that where many others have resigned, these officers have persevered. “Well done, good and faithful servants.” Brigadier Anand Pillay, deputy cluster commander, said 20 or 30 years of service is indeed a milestone.
