G
oodwood is home to Mrs Deaf SA 2018. Tracy Duncan (33) not only walked away as top Mrs (there is a Miss and Mr too) at the gala event held in Pretoria on Saturday 13 October, she was also announced Mrs Deaf Personality and Mrs Deaf Charity. Tracy says it was an unbelievable feeling being announced the winner. ‘‘I was very emotional, but I composed myself to receive my sash and crown.” She dedicated her crown to her late father, Andrew Engel, who had always wanted her to enter the Miss SA pageant. “I know he is rooting for me in heaven,” she said. She thanked her husband, Warren, and the rest of her family for being so supportive during her journey as a finalist.
As “all the finalists were amazing in their own unique way”, Tracy said she felt honoured to be chosen as the winner. She was also chosen as one of the top two finalists to perform her talent – a fitness workout with drumsticks – at the gala event. In August when TygerBurger introduced Tracy as a finalist (“Deafness no obstacle”, 08/08), she said she decided to enter the pageant because she would like to make a positive impact on the deaf and hard-of-hearing community through fitness. This keen participant in obstacle races, who lives the example of conquering all kinds of obstacles, said: “A healthy mind and a healthy body together are so important for our wellbeing. It can boost a deaf or hard-of-hearing individual’s confidence and self-esteem.” Tracy wants to use the title as a platform to build a national fitness campaign for the youth in

deaf schools and disadvantaged communities. She wants these learners to believe in themselves and know that despite their deafness they can live fulfilled lives. Asked about the highlights of the journey, Tracy explained that leading up to the gala event, they had a publicity week together with the other finalists, the MDSA team (Miss, Mr and Mrs Deaf SA organisers) and the Tourism Friendly sponsors, which was very special. “It was my very first time in Pretoria so I was having the time of my life at the Harties Cableway, Harties Boat Company and Airboat and many more.” She said she even learned to play drums at a bush lodge. “That experience alone proves that the deaf can do anything but hear.” Other highlights included learning about the wildlife at the Ann van Dyke Cheetah Centre and a night game drive at a lion park.

Janice Jonker, CEO of MDSA, said she believes Tracy will be a very good ambassador for South Africa and she deserves the title. “She will not be doing the journey on her own – we, the MDSA, will support her all the way.” Tracy won a long list of prizes from clothing vouchers to hair and beauty products. But it is the title that she hopes will help her realise her dreams. Her title as Mrs Deaf SA is a promise to the deaf community to help fill the gaps between the deaf and hearing communities, said Tracy. “I will be working hard on my platform which is a national fitness campaign across South Africa, motivating and inspiring our deaf youth to always go the extra mile in life, to be proudly deaf, to keep a healthy, active lifestyle and to always find their ability in their disability.”
