WYNNE ROAD: NOT YET REINSTATED AFTER PIPE BURST
City ‘sorry’ about road @demi_lisa
T
he City of Cape Town has apologised to local residents because a section of Wynne Road has not yet been reinstated after a pipe burst. In September, a Parow Valley resident said serious interventions were needed after he reported burst pipes and potholes in the area. According to the resident, the issue had been reported about four months previously, but nothing had been done (“Parow roads a problem”, 26/9).
Another resident complained a month later and said the City of Cape Town does nothing for the street. The resident mentioned the street not being repaired, the horrible paint job, filthy oil splatters on pavements and papers in the road causing a health risk, potholes being temporarily repaired and then reopening, and the stop-street markings and name of the street not being visible. According to City of Cape Town spokesperson, Luthando Tyhalibongo, the delay was caused by capacity constraints. Tyhalibongo says in order to address this, the City is planning on appointing a contractor to deal with the backlog of road reinstate-

ments. “It is expected that this appointment process will take approximately three weeks,” says Tyhalibongo. Tyhalibongo says the road markings and road names along Wynne Street in Parow are still clearly visible and in good condition. “The street is cleaned on a regular basis by the Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID).” The western section of Wynne Street between Robertson Street and Tierberg Road is also still in a fairly good condition, while the eastern section between Tierberg Road and Toner South Street needs a bit of attention, he says.
“Our depot will be able to attend to the work, which includes patching new potholes, patching older pothole repairs which are starting to strip, and selective surface patches.” Derek Bock, COO of the VRCID, says they clean Wynne Road among others on a regular basis, but the upkeep in terms of maintenance is the City’s responsibility. “If the City is serious about urban renewal, they should allocate more resources to the VRCID area as the VRCID is taking strain with its limited resources,” he says.
