HEALTH AWARENESS: SPIRITUAL AND WELLNESS EVENT HOSTED AT NORTHLINK
Health goes high profile LISA LOTTERING @demi_lisa
A
combined spiritual and wellness event was hosted at the Parow Northlink campus recently and attended by a number of high-profile politicians. “You are special, worthy young women and men and your life is in your hands,” DA MP Denise Robinson said in her address to the students on Wednesday 11 April. The event was a collaboration between the
Spirituality Media Charity and Parow Day Clinic, and was centred round the talk and a health awareness clinic. Jimi Bertrend, from the Spirituality Media Charity, said the talk was aimed at educating students about modern health challenges while conducting HIV, diabetes, blood pressure and other tests to help improve their health. Robinson urged students to complete their studies, work hard and uplift one another. She also highlighted that Freedom Day (27
April) is around the corner and reminded students that they have privileges, which are inherently coupled with responsibilities. “Freedom leaders like the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela have sacrificed so much for the freedom to vote, which should be practised responsibly,” said Robinson. Robinson also encouraged the students to make the right choices only if and when they are ready. “No means no,” she said. “With freedom comes responsibility and freedom
to take care of your own sexuality,” she added. She encouraged female students to protect themselves by getting the contraceptive injection or going on the pill. Cope leader Mosiwe Lekota, who also attended the talk, said a health awareness clinic is important because young girls and women need to be educated on HIV/Aids. “We are continuing a tradition which is not new, but one that has evolved,” he said.
