KUILS RIVER: RESIDENTS GET TOGETHER TO RUN

he creation of a space and time in which Kuils River residents of all ages, fitness levels and backgrounds can come together to enjoy a Saturday morning walk or run is in the works as local resident Hennie Alberts works on establishing a parkrun in Kuils River. For the past three weeks residents have been meeting at the park opposite Mikro Primary School on Saturday mornings to complete a 5km walk or run. The event, which has been dubbed De Kuilen Runs, sees runners and walkers taking a figure eight shaped route around Mikro Primary School and De Kuilen High School. According to Alberts this is the initial route and will not be the route should Kuils River be granted a parkrun. The proposed area for the parkrun is the area situated alongside the river in Sandalwood Road in the direction of Saxdowns Road. “We want it situated here so we can have residents from both Bellville and Kraaifontein join us on Saturdays,” he says. Sections of the proposed area are still very sandy and need to be hardened and the team also wants to erect park benches. Alberts says the necessary improvements can only be brought about with the assistance of donations from local businesses.
“Everyone is welcome to join us at the De Kuilen Runs because the bigger and more visible the group, the quicker we will be able to garner our parkrun status,” says Alberts. Parkruns are free weekly 5km timed runs which take place around the world. The runs are free and open to everyone and are safe and easy to participate in. Participants are simply required to bring along their barcodes, which are issued when signing up online. Thus far Alberts has been in contact with the Western Cape director of Parkrun SA. “We still have some work to do before we can become official, as it is a requirement that no roads be crossed and that the route be as safe as possible,” explains Alberts. De Kuilen Runs has been doing well on Facebook, having almost 100 likes on the Kuils River Community page. “We want to give the community a facility where they can exercise in a safe environment whether they be moms with a pram, young and fit, or 80, 70 or 60 years old,” says Alberts. VThe group for De Kuilen Runs meet at 07:45 on the field opposite Mikro Primary School every Saturday morning. Residents wanting to stay informed about the developments regarding Kuils River’s parkrun status can send Alberts a message on WhatsApp on 082 550 0283, asking him to add them to the group dealing with all the details.
