SILVERSANDS: WOMAN (22) ALLEGEDLY KILLED BY BOYFRIEND

esidents of Silversands have been left in shock after a 22-year-old woman was found dead in a home in Speyer Street on Tuesday 4 December. What makes the incident even more concerning is that it took place during 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, with local police having pledged their support towards eradicating the scourge of abuse within the community. According to Sergeant Liesel Beukes of Kuils River police, the woman was found deceased in a pool of blood. It is alleged that the woman, whose identi-
ty is as yet not known to TygerBurger, was house-sitting for her brother when the incident took place. “The woman obtained multiple stab wounds to her upper body,” says Beukes. “A 20-year-old man has been arrested for the murder.” It is alleged that the arrested man was the deceased’s boyfriend. According to outgoing chairperson of the Silversands Neighbourhood Watch, Hilton Kock, this marks the first incidence of such a violent crime within the area since the inception of the watch. “This is definitely not a normal occurrence and is a big shock to everybody,” he says. Kock shares that the woman’s body was
found at about midday. “According to reports of those on the scene, her boyfriend got there and found that the security gate was locked. He pushed the door open and could see her legs from the doorway. He then went to call the neighbour for assistance. They broke the gate’s lock and entered. He went in and came back out,” explains Kock. Kock says that when he arrived on the scene, the victim’s boyfriend was still there. The boyfriend would later be arrested as a suspect. Kock further shares that a fellow neighbourhood watch member later revealed that the victim had confided in him on Sunday 2 December, saying that she felt unsafe be-
cause her boyfriend had allegedly choked her on Saturday and he might return to harm her again. “He (the neighbourhood watch member) told her to lay charge against her boyfriend but she was hesitant to do so,” says Kock. In support of the family, the neighbourhood watch and local residents gathered in Speyer Street on Friday 7 December for a night vigil. “We wanted to show our support to the family, and show them that they most certainly are in our prayers. It is the right thing to do,” says Kock. He and fellow members of the neighbourhood watch hope this incident will spur local residents on in joining the watch, to combat other forms of crime within the area.
