WP Media staff spread festive cheer Staffers of WP Media, publisher of TygerBurger, People’s Post and City Vision, spread some love and festive cheer by gifting a present to each of the children housed at Leliebloem House. The children’s home was founded as House of Mercy by Bishop Gray in 1868. Archdeacon Lightfoot gave a sum of money for the purpose of establishing a refuge for fallen women in Plein Street, Cape Town. In 1886, House of Mercy was resettled on a site on the Leliebloem House Estate, made possible through the generosity of the Society of St John the Evangelist. WP Media staff and their families visited the home on Wednesday last week to hand over the gifts to the children and spend a few moments with them.
This is the last TygerBurger of 2018. The first edition in the New Year will hit the streets on 16 January. TygerBurger wishes all our readers a safe and joyous festive season.
SUBCOUNCIL 2: BRENDA HANSEN IS NEW CHAIRPERSON
Hansen takes the reins DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
T
aking over the reins from Grant Twigg, Brenda Hansen was elected as the new chairperson of subcouncil 2 at a special council meeting on Friday afternoon. Subcouncil 2 consists of six wards and covers the area that includes the northern neighbourhoods of Kuils River, being Soneike, Amandelsig and Mobile Park, Kraaifontein, and Brackenfell. Entering politics, Hansen joined the sub-
council in May 2011 as ward councillor for ward 111 in Kraaifontein and has during this time become the type of local politician “that cares about her community and often goes the extra mile”, as described by Brackenfell ward councillor and newly appointed Mayco member for spatial planning and environment, Marian Nieuwoudt. Hansen vowed to keep up the high standard of service delivery the subcouncil has become known for in City circles. Outgoing chairperson Grant Twigg, now the Mayco member for urban management
in the City, ascribed this solid performance to the fact that councillors in subcouncil 2, despite their political affiliations, have always prioritised service delivery to their communities. “Thank you that we never had to play politics here but could concentrate on services. We had our challenges and debates but we continued to do what was best for our communities,” Twigg said in his last speech as chairperson. He will remain ward councillor for ward 7. Hansen thanked Twigg for his strong lead-
ership. “I have learned from the best and will continue to give my best,” she said. Following Hansen’s election it was announced that current acting municipal manager Amelia van Rhyn was appointed new municipal manager for the subcouncil, a decision that prompted a jubilant response among councillors. ANC ward councillor Simpiwe Nonkeyizana expressed his satisfaction by saying: “It would have been a setback if anyone else was appointed in this position. Van Rhyn understands the dynamics of the area.”
