The Cutie Pie Dog Show was held in Brackenfell on Wednesday 21 March. Show organiser and owner of the Cutie Pie Doggy Parlor, Melandri Kapp, says she was surprised at the big turnout at the event: “The show was attended by at least 500 people. The success of the show is thanks to the support of those who attended.” Nicole Matheze from Kuils River enjoyed the dog show with her pooch Suzie. More photos on page 6. PHOTO: COLLEN MARTHEZE
uils River Law Enforcement was thrown a curveball last week when they were halted by the City’s Legal Services Department from breaking down the informal settlement in Van Riebeeck Road. “I was stopped by our legal department [and instructed] not to proceed with clearing the land as this is private property. “The legal department informed me that the owner must apply for an eviction order first. Only then can we assist,” said a senior inspector at the Kuils River Law Enforcement offices in response to a query by ward councillor Desirée Visagie. Over recent weeks the City was bombarded with complaints from concerned residents and the pressure was heavy on Law Enforcement to act. The owner of the land was traced and in a meeting that followed he gave Law Enforcement permission to remove the vagrants. Ward councillor Desirée Visagie says she is focusing her attention on this issue. “I follow up on this issue on a daily basis and I often visit the site only to be chased away. It is chaos. The owner was informed

that he needs to obtain an eviction order before we can act legally. We are awaiting his response,” she says. Over the past few months, the settlement started to take place on private land across the street from the police station, as one by one little shacks were erected by the homeless. Currently there are five structures in the camp, which residents say are an eyesore and attract criminal elements. “I fear this community will continue to grow and it will one day be too difficult for Law Enforcement to do anything about it. “With that said, I fear that it could also see a rise in the criminal activity within the area,” says resident Keenan Williams, who also reported the situation to the Kuils River police. Police however say they can intervene only if the rightful owner of the property lays a criminal charge of trespassing against the vagrants. “Police cannot harass citizens as they feel fit and should respect every person’s constitutional rights,” said a police spokesperson in response to the matter.
