able View police announced this week that Colonel Lindiwe Dyantyi, who had been acting in the post of station commander since November last year, has been permanently appointed.

The news was welcomed by the Table View Neighbourhood Watch.

Laura Outhet, spokesperson, says in her time at the station thus far, Dyantyi has truly revealed her willingness to work with the various organisations, which has benefited the community.

“The colonel has strong beliefs and is a natural born leader. She inspires others within the police ranks to perform at their optimal level at all times and give 110%.

“She holds a high sense of order; she believes in the abilities in her team, armed response companies, neighbourhood watch and various organisations in the area.

“Her positive attitude filters down through all channels, which facilitates a cohesive relationship within all the community structures. This, in turn, aids the community in our collective effort in the fight against crime and lawlessness,” Outhet says.

Dyantyi was appointed to a permanent position on Monday 9 April.

This week she told TygerBurger that she feels great about the appointment because Table View had been her new home since 20 November when she took over from the former station commander, Colonel Dirk Vosloo.

Asked what some of the challenges are that she has identified

and dealt with since her redeployment, Dyantyi mentions illegal shebeens, which according to her are the crime generators of contact crimes.

Another challenge she identified was the low morale among police members, something she says has now been uplifted.

Going forward, she says, she will focus on dealing with crimes such as theft out of motor vehicles, house break-ins, robberies and assaults – crimes often plaguing Table View.

Outhet says the Table View Neighbourhood Watch hopes to carry on working with the police, Law Enforcement and all community-based crime fighters conducting regular and effective joint operations – “ultimately working closer to the end goal of making our streets safer and bringing the community together.”

Dyantyi says these working relationships are vital to the police. “It is of great importance as the police alone cannot win the fight against crime, and their valuable contribution is highly appreciated by Table View police,” she says.

The WearSA Fashion Festival took place recently at the Canal Walk Shopping Centre where South African designers could showcase some of their unique work. The festival ended with a bang as local label lovers came out in their numbers from all over Cape Town to support the event, titled “WearSA - The People’s Runway”. Yolanda Soginga, spokesperson, says the fashion show is an effort to bring SA fashion to the people and showcase how talented South Africans are as a designing nation, sending the message that cool clothes are actually made in South Africa. The event took place on Saturday 7 April. The festival was borne out of SACTWU’s “Save the Jobs” campaign, which was launched in 2002.

Members of the public are being encouraged to sign up as informants.

The Table View police issued a statement last week saying that people register themselves as informers should they have information relating to criminal activities taking place in their respective areas, or if they are aware of a crime that will be committed in an area, not necessarily their own.

The individual will be registered as an informant and will receive an informer reward, which will be paid out to the person when the information received is positive, the police say.

The reward can be between R100 and R12 500 for less serious crimes, and between R200 and R25 000 for more serious crimes.

In some instances, the reward may exceed R25 000.

Individuals with information on a crime that will still take place are also urged to call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 to report the crime anonymously.

“It is important to remember that details of informers are strictly confidential,” says Captain Adriana Chandler, police spokesperson.

Bus strike may leave commuters stranded C

ommuters on the West Coast will, as of today onwards, have to make alternative travel arrangements.

This comes after the City of Cape Town announced earlier this week that its bus drivers will embark on a national strike.

In a statement issued on Monday, the City’s Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport and urban development, says the service will be suspended as from midnight until further notice. No MyCiTi buses will be operating and commuters are requested in advance to make alternative arrangements, he says.

The nationwide strike action affecting the entire country is as a result of deadlocked wage negotiations. The unions which are

party to the South African Road Passengers Bargaining Council have subsequently given notice of their intention to embark on strike action: “We regret the inconvenience caused and the pressure it adds on commuters to make alternative travel arrangements. The strike will have a serious knockon effect on all public transport and roadbased traffic, as more than 72 000 commuters make use of the MyCiTi service on any given weekday. Furthermore, we anticipate that the strike action will have a severe impact on Cape Town’s commuters who are already taking strain due to the challenges that Metrorail is experiencing with the central line,” Herron says.

Service putting seatbelt safety in the spotlight RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

C

ommunity Medics, a volunteer medical emergency response service, recently issued a statement on social media, requesting motorists to always ensure that their passengers, especially young children, are strapped in.

In the post dated Monday 9 April, the service says being in a vehicle is the most dangerous part of anyone’s day.

People are encouraged to always wear their seatbelt and to ensure passengers are strapped in. Children, they insist, should be in restraints suitable to their height and weight.

“Community Medics often attend to more than one vehicle collision in a day in the area. It breaks our hearts to see children injured and in pain. They rely on adults to enforce the safety rules to lessen the chances of severe injury and even death,” says Kim Jurgens, spokesperson for the service.

She says since 2015 it has been the law that children under three years need to be in appropriate car seats for their height and weight. “However, it is a rare sight to see this being applied by parents. Ideally, children should also be in booster seats well beyond the age of three.”

Jurgens says the excuses they hear most commonly are that it is only a short trip, or that the child cries when in the seat, or that the parent will hold them tightly.

“Accidents don’t wait only for long trips – they often happen close to home when your mind is on what to make for supper or whether you will make it to school before

the bell rings.

“Children cry for many reasons, and safety rules should not be negotiable,” Jurgens emphasises.

In November last year, Professor Sebastian van As from the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Rondebosch told TygerBurger that the chance of a child being killed in a car accident is 10 times higher in South Africa than in Europe.

He was speaking during the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims in Milnerton at the time.

Van As also said that children injured in car crashes are more common in Africa and India than anywhere else in the world.

“The majority of the kids we see coming into hospital were not restrained, despite the law making it compulsory. At least 80% of the children were not restrained.

“Some pass away, but those who survive sustain permanent brain damage,” Van As said.

Jurgens says people should be consistent about car seats and seatbelts from the very first trip home from hospital with their newborn.

“Strapping a baby or child into the seatbelt with you does not work either – baby can slip out or be injured further by your weight.

“Children under 12 years should not be in the front seat. They can also be seriously injured by airbags as they deploy at face height of a child and not chest height as they do for an adult.

“There have been accidents that have left children blinded because of airbag injuries.

Children aged about eight to 12 years, de-

pending on their height, are able to sit in the back seat with the adult seatbelt,” says Jurgens.

For those who are not tall enough for the adult belt, clips or straps can be bought to position the belt correctly. These are advisable for petite adults as well.

Children from about 15 to 36kg, depending on their height, should sit on a booster seat, Jurgens adds.

She says when they are taller than the back of the seat, parents can use the booster cushion only.

“Toddlers should be sitting in toddler seats, ideally still rear-facing until around two years.

“Babies under a year old should always be rear-facing. Even if they are too tall and heavy for a baby capsule seat, they should still sit rear-facing as their heads make up such a large proportion of their body weight.”

She says forward-facing seats can increase the probability of neck and head injuries dramatically.

“Adults should of course always wear their seatbelts too.”

Jurgens says grandparents should also not be allowed to transport children without taking their safety into consideration.

“We need a culture change and this won’t happen without us all saying it is our problem, that it does take a village to raise a child, and that we will speak up when we see children being endangered,” says Jurgens. She adds: “An appropriate child safety seat is a priority.”

Driver’s head hits, damages windscreen RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj A motorist was treated by emergency services this past weekend following a motor vehicle accident in which the individual’s head hit the front windscreen.

The accident occurred on Friday evening on the corner of Blaauwberg and Gie roads.

Kim Jurgens, spokesperson for Community Medics, says the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time and hit his head against the windscreen – hard enough to damage the windscreen, she says.

“This is not very good for heads, necks and brains when someone hits their head hard like that – there can be coup and contrecoup injuries, which

means the brain can hit the front of the skull and then the back of the skull too. Additionally there can possibly be injury to the cervical spine, and this is also where some respiratory nerves are found so it can affect the ability to breathe.

“If he had been wearing a seatbelt, he would not have hit his head like this.

“Sure, he may have had some bruising around his clavicle (collarbone), or at worst fractured it, which is a far less serious injury than a head injury,” Jurgens says.

She says the service cannot disclose what type of injuries the patient suffered as medical information is confidential.

Beware of latest scam doing the rounds RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj Police have issued a warning to car owners following a nationwide scam whereby people often have to fork out large sums of money in order to retrieve their lost or stolen vehicles.

Owners of stolen vehicles are often contacted and informed that their vehicles

had been recovered. In order to have the vehicle returned, the owner is asked to pay an amount of R1500. This, according to the police, is not how such cases are dealt with.

Milnerton police spokesperson, Captain Nopaya Madyibi, says under no circumstances should any money be paid or vehicle registration papers be faxed to anyone asking for money.

“People must be aware that it is a scam,” Madyibi says.

Police say a total of seven such incidents have been reported to the Milnerton police, with two victims having paid the scam artists. The scam has been reported nationwide, though it is still unclear when it originally started.

No arrests have been made so far in connection with the scam.

On Wednesday 11 April shortly after noon, three alleged house burglars were caught in the act by local police members.

The three were busy breaking into a house in Kensal Close, Parklands.

They were arrested and appeared in court on Friday. Chandler says the three suspects are all in their twenties.

“They gained access to the house by kicking a door open. The house was not alarmed.

It also appears as if the suspects used a municipal dustbin to climb on, and over the wall of the property,” Chandler says.

Police also responded to a street robbery the day before in which a woman who was walking down Wood Drive was attacked and had her handbag taken from her. The suspect was arrested soon afterwards. The 27 year old appeared in court on Thursday.

According to Captain Marchell Rhode, spokesperson for the Durbanville police, the victim responded to an internet advertisement for a domestic grant by using an app on the internet.

“The victim paid an amount of R20 000 into an account on 7 March for so-called clearance fees to get a R250 000 loan for a business. “However, the complainant became suspicious and opened a fraud case at the Durbanville Police Station,” Rhode says.

He warns people to be aware of such incidents.

Bulrush fluff not harmful to humans T

he Environmental Management Department at the City of Cape Town says residents living in Milnerton and Table View and other areas such as Grassy Park, Lotus River and Pelican Park should not be too concerned about the appearance of white fluff blowing around as these are seeds being released from bulrushes.

The department says these seeds do not pose any serious health threats and adds that the natural event occurs every autumn.

Every year, towards the end of summer and the beginning of autumn, bulrushes, or Typha capensis, release their seeds over the course of a few weeks. These seeds are usually spread by the south-easterly winds and stick to items that are outside such as the washing, houses, cars, fences and even people, the City indicates.

“Residents are reminded that the seeds, resembling white fluff, do not pose any serious health risks. The Environmental Management Department makes every effort to

try to remove some of the ripe seed heads before the release of the seeds in order to minimise the inconvenience to residents.

However, this has a limited effect on the scale of the problem.

“Residents can minimise the impact of bulrush fluff by keeping their washing off lines and their faces covered on windy days, as well as by preventing the pollution of wetlands,” says Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport and urban development.

The bulrush is an indigenous aquatic plant that is found in southern and eastern Africa. Once pollutants and nutrients have entered a wetland, through channels such as stormwater disposed of by humans, the bulrush becomes invasive. It also diminishes water surface areas for recreational activities and impacts on the functioning of the ecosystems they invade.

Rates hikes to increase poverty gap DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

T

he middle class, lower middle class and vulnerable groups such as pensioners and single-parent households in Cape Town face poverty, should the proposed new rates and tariff increases be approved.

The draft budget for 2018/19 was tabled at the end of March and presented to a subcouncil 2 public meeting last Wednesday, to the consternation of many, who would have to pay between R500 and R1000 more on their municipal accounts come 1 July. It is especially the exorbitant increase in water tariffs and a proposed new levy that threaten the economic survival of Cape Town households.

Proposed rates and tariff increases for 2018/19 are: •Rates 7.2% •Electricity, an average increase of 8.14% •Refuse 5.7% •Water and sanitation, both 27% Apart from the 27% increase in water and sanitation respectively, the City also introduced an additional fixed water charge.

This charge will cover the costs of the reticulation and is based on the connection size of the pipe to your system.

A pipe 15mm in diameter will carry a levy of R56, 20mm R100, 40mm R400, 80mm R1600 and so forth. People living in housing complexes with shared water meters and con-

nection pipes will be hardest hit, according to a TygerBurger source.

“These pipes are the largest and an average complex could pay about R10 000 for this levy, leaving individual unit owners with a levy as high as R400 per month in the case of 40 units, excluding the normal usage,” the source says.

Poor households and those with a property valued lower than R400 000 will not be affected by these fixed rates.

“Add to this the normal water and sanitation tariff, rates and electricity increase and you’re looking at a municipal account that could be anything between R400 and R1000 more for middle and lower middle class households,” the source says (see table alongside).

Rebates of between 50 and 100% will apply to indigent households and households where the property is valued below R400 000.

A resident who prefers not to be named says: “We are being taxed out of our properties. It is totally unfair.”

“Many households barely make ends meet each month and will not be able to afford these rates. People will lose their homes.

Others won’t be able to pay school fees or afford their monthly grocery bill any longer.

Pensioners whose homes were paid up years ago of which the values were inflated over recent years won’t be able to pay their municipal accounts at all,” this source says.

Sassa’s spokesperson, Lisa Kindo, says if a beneficiary did not receive their social grant, the matter must be reported to their nearest Sassa local office.

“Where a beneficiary disputes the deductions or loans or if no social grant was received, an affidavit is requested whereby the client will indicate that deductions must be stopped and refunded.”

According to Kindo, Sassa will assist with the affidavit or, in many instances, the client visits the Sassa contact point with an affidavit from the South African

Police Service. “Thereafter the information will be captured on the Customer Care Application System (CCAS) and the incident number (reference number) is provided to the client with a copy of the affidavit stamped with the date as proof of inquiry or complaint,” she says.

Kindo says after investigation, the beneficiary will be contacted directly with an outcome. However, clients are advised by a Sassa official to contact them either via email, telephonically or in person. ews about the death of a beloved father, husband and dog carer has shocked the Table View community.

The deceased, Albert Munthali, died on Tuesday night last week during an apparent armed robbery in Dunoon. He was shot and killed.

One resident, Cheryl Campbell, posted the news of his passing on the Table View Neighbours Facebook page. The resident described Albert as a good friend.

“I have known Albert for all the many years he worked at Vet-Clin in Table View as the kennel assistant. Albert took such good care of all the sick animals in the hospital.

“The most gentle and kind man I have had the honour to know,” Campbell wrote.

According to her, Albert was originally from Malawi.

“He knew I ran a rescue and was always there with a quiet word of comfort and pat on the shoulder when a bad case could not be saved. Equally, he was there with a broad smile to cheer the cases on to their new homes at their last vet check. The world has lost a true animal warrior and his family a father, son, brother and husband,” the bereaved Campbell concluded.

Albert was employed at the Vet-Clin in Blaauwberg Road, Table View, where he had been working for almost five years, says Dr Vic Luus, a veterinary surgeon at the clinic.

He worked as a kennelman, or veterinary assistant.

“He was always friendly with a smile and a good sense of humour. We are shocked by the news and saddened by the waste of a

life,” Luus says.

Albert was married with a daughter who recently turned three.

Luus says the family are arranging to repatriate the body to Malawi for burial. A fund has been started to help arrange his funeral.

Captain Adriana Chandler, Table View police spokesperson, confirms that the Milnerton police have opened a murder docket after the police were called to a scene where the body of a foreign national was discovered on Tuesday 9 April at 09:00.

“The deceased appeared to have been shot in the chest.

“No arrests have yet been made,” Chandler says.

raffic in Table View was once again disrupted on Thursday and Friday morning last week when protest action broke out in Dunoon, causing heavy delays.

Table View police spokesperson, Captain Adriana Chandler, confirms that six people were arrested on Friday by Milnerton police in connection with the unrest.

She says those arrested have been charged with public violence. They appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

She says the protest action is due to the removal of illegal structures in the Dunoon area by the Land Invasion Task Team of the City of Cape Town.

This is confirmed by Richard Bosman, the City’s executive director of safety and security.

Bosman says the protest was in reaction to a land invasion operation in the area on Thursday 12 April.

He also confirms that no injuries were reported to the City and no City property was damaged.

According to the police, the protest started early Thursday. Chandler says members of the Table View police responded to the unrest in Potsdam Road by 14:50, adding that when officers arrived at the scene they found a meat truck in flames.

“Bystanders stated that six men, two of whom were armed with a rifle and a handgun, pointed their guns at the three occupants and forced them out of the truck, before setting it alight. The three occupants of the truck fled unharmed.”

A similar incident unfolded after 19:00 in Potsdam Road when the road was blocked with boulders. The driver of a truck was forced to stop when stones were thrown at the truck. In order to avoid injury, he jumped out of the vehicle and ran away. “The protesters then set the vehicle alight,” Chandler says.

There is a permanent road warning that there are potholes.

Why has this road not been repaired properly, instead of having a pothole sign?

‘Bullying’ attacks on dog breeders Lyndsay Norton’s reaction (“Pets: adopt don’t shop”, 11/4) to my previous letter regarding the constant attacks on dog breeders proves my point. She presumes to hog the moral high ground and attacks anyone who dares disagree with her. She assumes I am a dog breeder. I’m not. But I do take issue with people like her who use emotional blackmail to attack dog breeders to the extent that some of them have given up breeding dogs. That is bullying and it is unacceptable.

In my previous letter I supported registered breeders, because they are the ones who improve and maintain breed standards. I pointed out that unregistered dogs cannot really be called “pure-bred”, but I have owned and loved several such unregistered dogs from home-based breeders. They have all been at least a recognisable breed, lovingly bred by caring people, with all the necessary care and vaccinations. That is what many pet lovers want, and comparing the demand created by these buyers and owners to the demand for drugs and prostitution is simply more bullying.

Most stray rescues come from areas where dogs are not cared for at all and breed indiscriminately among themselves. I strongly support all efforts to round up and at

least sterilise such dogs, but I do not want to own one and I will not be bullied into doing so. Instead, the SPCA is my charity of choice to get part of the value of my shop at a well-known store as a donation.

Everyone can help keep beaches clean With reference to “Volunteers help clean up Sunset Beach” (4/4), I would like to thank the volunteers from the Two Oceans Aquarium for holding the beach clean-up event on 21 March at Sunset Beach.

I have been a resident of Sunset Beach for 15 years and take great pride in our beautiful beach.

I have walked on Sunset Beach every day, early in the morning, since I started living there and I have always picked up the litter along the stretch that I walk, during that time (starting at Hastula Way, walking to the beginning of the golf course and the same distance in the other direction on other days).

At the moment I have been quite impressed with the state of the beach, though I still find some litter to remove.

When the rubbish gets to the stage that it is far too much for me to clear, I contact the City of Cape Town’s Solid Waste Department.

They are usually quite prompt in attending to clearing it.

I always thank them for their response.

Cricket teams hit crime for a six T

he battle lines were drawn early on the morning of Saturday 7 April when the cricket teams from Bothasig police, District Watch, Swart Security, the Bothasig, Edgemead and Richwood neighbourhood watches, Bosmansdam High School and “The Outsiders” (a group of friends) converged on the fields of Edgemead High School for the “Hit crime for a six” project organised by Bothasig police.

After a welcoming word from Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Jacobs, Bothasig station commander, the first ball was “fired”. It was game on as Bothasig police and Swart Security squared up on the pitch with the Bobbies batting first. The police team started with a win. Thereafter various battles ensued between the different teams. During the midday lunch break, the crowd was entertained by a dog show from the City’s K9 Unit before play continued. By late afternoon it was the teams from Bothasig police and The Outsiders left standing to face each other in the final.

After a hard-fought game the police team had to bow to the exuberance of the youth and took up second spot, with the team from

Bosmansdam High School ending third.

Radio station OneFM broadcasted from the venue and kept the spectators entertained. They were well supported by Aristo Steyn, chairperson of Bothasig Neighbourhood Watch (NHW), who kept everyone up to date with commentary and the results of the games. Steyn won the Best Spectator Prize for his effort.

Other category prize winners were Wian Stears (biggest six), Constable Jonathan Kriel (best wicketkeeper), Detective Sergeant Godwin Oppel (most runs scored), Frankie Rodriguez of Bothasig NHW (most entertaining player), Edgemead NHW (highest placed NHW) and Bothasig police (team of the day, as nominated by the other teams).

The winners all received prizes and cricket teams received medals, with a trophy for the winning team. Jacobs and Dave Morley, chairperson of the Bothasig Community Policing Forum, thanked everyone who participated, supported or just visited for the effort they made to ensure the success of the event.

They thanked the partners on the day who supplied the prizes for the different categories, which were all well received.

52 Fisantekraal pets get ‘the big snip’ ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) held its first sterilisation outreach this year in Fisantekraal this past Saturday – sterilising a total of 52 dogs and cats.

Jennifer Davies, spokesperson for FAW, explains that the sterilisation of companion animals is their main focus area.

“Our slogan for this year is ‘Change the future: spay and neuter’, because the number one way to prevent future suffering of animals is to sterilise now.

“We are extremely fortunate to have many veterinary practices in the area which back us in this work.”

A total of six veterinarians, three veterinary nurses and three assistants from Tyg-

erberg Animal Hospital, as well as 13 volunteers from around the northern suburbs, joined forces towards this goal.

Volunteers, who had signed up dozens of animals for sterilisation, started collecting the animals and bringing them to the hall, where they were checked in and prepared for surgery.

Several owners brought their animals in themselves.

“The vets, nurses and orderlies work in a scrupulously clean makeshift operating theatre and ensure that every animal is anaesthetised and doesn’t experience any pain.

Once sterilised, they were made comfortable with donated blankets, and carefully watched to ensure they regained consciousness quickly and were warm and calm.

“The goal was to have at least 70% of the

animals sterilised. We are very grateful to all our loyal supporters who donate muchneeded funds and to people who donate their time and expertise to achieve this goal.

“We want to emphasise that by no means are all township animals in bad shape – many are very healthy, happy and loved, but sadly, thousands are not living good lives due to uncontrolled breeding.”

Davies explains that uncontrolled breeding of animals has a ripple effect – not just for the animals, but for people too.

“Most dog bites are by unneutered male dogs; females in season or with puppies can be territorial and bite. And the main victims of these bites are children.

“Excessive animals in an area with few resources can lead to the spread of diseases and parasites, some of which people can get

too.

“With the success of this sterithon fresh in our minds, we’re already planning the next one. We have a long list of animals waiting to get ‘the big snip’ and have their futures changed for the better.”

FAW is a small, volunteer-run organisation working in Fisantekraal since 2005.

The organisation relies on donations to keep going and welcomes volunteers, both for help within the area and through fundraising.

FAW is only able to assist with the sterilisation of animals in their area of operation.

Namibiër wil storie eg hou AVRIL FILLIES

n die sepie Suidooster op kykNET het Gideon Lombard ’n buite-egtelike kind by Simone Biscombe (Bianca Fourie) en vir hom was hierdie ondervinding ongelooflik.

“Dit is ’n ongelooflike ervaring om ’n klein mens voor jou te sien grootword. Sy bring ook ’n wonderlike onvoorspelbaarheid na die TV-ervaring toe. Sy doen net wat sy wil en ons moet by haar aanpas. Al is dit ’n fiktiewe storie, kan ek nie help om te dink aan die verantwoordelikheid wat ons teenoor kinders het nie,” het hy gesê.

Hy is die tweede Namibiër in die sepie, saam met Gantane Kusch, en hoewel hulle albei saam aan die Universiteit van Kaapstad studeer het, het hulle nog nooit saam gewerk nie.

“Ons is goeie vriende met baie in gemeen en dis altyd wonderlik om iemand beter te leer ken deur Suidooster.

“My rol as Stefan in Suidooster sal ek beskryf as ’n soort Jan Alleman waarby baie jong mans aanklank vind. Hy is ambisieus en al bedoel hy goed, bevind hy homself telkens in die moeilikheid, vanweë sy hardkoppigheid en eiewysheid.

“Die uitdaging vir my is om elke situasie en storielyn eg te hou en met geloofwaardige detail te benader,” het Gideon gesê.

Baie van die sepiekykers beskou hom as iemand wat in die verlede vasgevang is en nie oor sy egskeiding kan kom nie.

Leer uit verhoudings “Om die rol te kon speel, het ek aan al my eie verhoudingervarings gedink en probeer onthou wat ek daaruit geleer het, maar die grootste deel van my voorbereiding het in die tekste gelê. Ek werk hard om elke moontlikheid ten opsigte van die storie en die spel te ontleed, en probeer dus opdaag

met verskillende opsies.

“Tussen die skiet van tonele deur is ek ook kinderoppasser vir Desire Gardner se seun, James.

“Ek en James deel dieselfde droë humorsin en lewensuitgangspunt. Ons is albei baie logies in ons lewensfilosofie en om die wêreld deur die oë van ’n kind te sien, gee ’n mens opnuut waardering vir die eenvoudige dinge om jou,” het hy gesê.

Mis Namibië se woestyn Wat hy die meeste van Namibië mis, is die woestyn, die gevoel van ruimte, die reuk van reën en veral die sonsondergange.

“Die malste ding wat ek nog wil doen, is om met ’n valskerm oor die Namibwoestyn te spring. As ek in vyf woorde kan beskryf om dié gevoel te verwoord, sal dit wees: adrenalien, stilte, hoogte, ruimte en asem.

“Die woestyn lyk dieselfde van ’n sekere hoogte, so dit word moeilik om te bepaal hoe hoog jy werklik van die grond af is. My ander stokperdjies sluit in musiek maak, lees, kook en boks,” het hy gesê.

Van baldans het hy geen benul nie, maar hy is beslis nie bang om te probeer nie.

“Eden doen ongelooflik goed elke Sondagaand in die danskompetisie op televisie, en ek weet nie of ek heeltemal by hom sal kan byhou nie.

As hy wil wegbreek van akteur wees, onderneem hy solo-wegbreke.

“Ek vat een keer per jaar boeke en instru-

mente, klim in my kar, en ry vir tien dae na ’n deel van die land waar ek nog nie was nie. Wat nog op my wenslysie is, is om plekke in die wêreld te besoek waar ek nog nie was nie, soos Japan en Rusland. Ek wil ook graag die Camino en Inca-roete gaan stap. Wat bewonderaars nie van my weet nie, is dat ek vier tale kan praat,” het hy gesê.

Om akteur te wees was nie sy enigste droom nie.

“Aanvanklik het ek musiek studeer, toe filosofie en toe eers drama.

“Ek het nooit wakker geword met die droom om ’n akteur te wees nie. Dit was die samekoms van ’n klomp belangstellings. As kind in Namibië het ek aan baie sport deelgeneem, maar geen provinsiale kleure verwerf nie. Ek het hoofsaaklik tennis en krieket gespeel en ook vir lank gestoei,” het hy gesê.

Wanneer tonele vir die sepie geskiet word, probeer hy en Dean Smith (Wade) gedurig om mekaar te laat lag.

“Ons probeer allerhande klein dingetjies om in die proses te slaag, soos ’n stoute glimlag of ’n vreemde uitdrukking van ’n woord en dit kan ’n hele toneel omvergooi.

En agterna lag ons daaroor,” het Dean gesê.

Gideon is spyt oor een of twee keuses wat hy in sy lewe gemaak het, maar het nie slapelose nagte daaroor nie.

“Indien ek eendag die kans kry om in enige fliek met ’n akteur en regisseur van my keuse te speel, sal dit saam met Marthinus Basson en Jaco Bouwer as regisseur wees en dit moet definitief Hamlet wees. The 22-year-old Céline, a singer and songwriter from Durbanville, will launch her long-awaited debut album on Saturday 21 April at Die Boer Theatre Restaurant in Durbanville.

The show will feature Céline’s dynamic and memorable songs, which she will perform with her backing band – consisting of lead guitarist Bruce Sonnekus, bassist Justen Hosken, and Johann Rossouw on drums.

Céline lives in Durbanville and is a former learner of Stellenberg High School.

She has been performing since she was 11 years old and she likes to create uniquesounding songs that are meaningful, catchy, interesting to listen to and which incorporate elements from different genres.

She has just successfully completed her studies in performing arts at The Stage Performing Arts Studio in Bellville. She passed the Rockschool London Grade 8 examinations in drums, guitar and bass guitar while a student at Jamrock Music Academy in Brackenfell for five years.

She signed a publishing contract with Traxtudio International in 2015. She has also been invited to be an endorsee of the music retail group, Mars Music.

Céline was recently selected as one of the top 10 contestants in the Huawei KDay Dream It Possible competition. All contestants had to sing an extract from the Huawei brand song called “Dream It Possible”.

Céline has spent the past four years working on perfecting the songs for her debut album, Blue. Together with her producer, Riaan Steyn from Traxtudio, she has created songs that have a unique sound that ties together her influences, but still remains true to her style of writing.

Her songs are a delightful blend of genres from pop to rock with a touch of blues and adult contemporary and even some Latin!

This fusion style appeals to a wide audience.

or the past 30 years, Western Province has been dominating the national volleyball scene and this year the trend continues as they won the indoor and beach volleyball titles for both men and women at the inaugural National Volleyball League Championships, which took place in Durban at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Indoor Sports Centre and Durban’s New Beach recently.

The players come from Kuils River, University of the Western Cape (UWC), Western Cape Sports School, Athlone, Khayalitsha, Mitchell’s Plain, Ocean View and Atlantis.

Over the years, no other provincial team has won more national tournaments in the junior, youth and senior categories than the prolific Western Cranes.

In the beach volleyball division for women it was Randy Williams and Christin Delcarme who took top honours, with Grant Goldschmidt and Leo Williams holding the trophy aloft for the men.

Clinton Stemmet (best attacker and most valuable player), Carlo van Nelson (best defender) and Ethan May (best server) also bagged the most prestigious awards for the Cranes.

“We have the best minds in the game when it comes to coaching. We have a number of coaches with level one and two FIVB coaching qualifications combined with vast knowledge of volleyball passed on over more than three decades.

“In the 1980s and 1990s we had good programmes running in schools when physical training was still part of the curriculum, which was the main talent identification and feeder system for clubs and provincial teams.

“Since then we have consistently had passionate individuals growing volleyball in the communities with the support of the

Dynamic dancers off to LA STEHAN SCHOEMAN Four young and energetic dancers from DanceCraft Studio in Bellville are shaking and moving in perfect harmony, winning several medals at the recent South Africa Championships of Performing Arts in Rustenburg.

With this achievement they have been selected to compete in the World Championships of Performing Arts in Long Beach, Los Angeles in June.

What makes this achievement noteworthy is the fact that Tazkia Adams (Kuils River), Keana van der Walt (Belhar), Khay-lin Ceasar (Eerste River) and Paris Marchant (Brackenfell) only started dancing in June last year.

“I am so proud of the girls performing as DanceCraft Superstarz. Their passion and dedication is second to none and I admire them for that. Seeing that this was their first national competition their performances were phenomenal.

“They would sit and watch the performances of the other competitors, trying to better themselves, seeing as most of the others have been competing much longer. Back at the lodge they will take it upon themselves to practise,” says coach, Corne Delport. The fact that they competed in four different dance categories (lyrical, musical character, open and contemporary) and bagged four gold medals for their efforts speaks volumes about their talent. Paris Marchant also won a gold medal in solo music theatre and Khay-Lin Ceaser bronze in lyrical dancing. With Paris’ gold medal performance she will also compete in Los Angeles in the solo division.

ith entries that include the best from Ferrari, Lamborghini and Aston Martin, the national Extreme Festival at Killarney on Saturday promises to match the excitement of last year’s final round of the World Rallycross Championship at the same venue.

Although it’s not the 007 model driven by James Bond in the movies, Charl Arangies’ Aston Martin Vantage is the latest sevenspeed, six-litre V12 rocketship that is due to make its first appearance at Killarney in the G&H Extreme Supercar races. Described as the ultimate predator, it has a claimed top speed of over 330km/h and was the winner of the GTE Pro class at the Le Mans 24-hour race last year. And together with other brand names like Porsche, Lotus Turbo, V10 Dodge Viper and BMW M3, these events should be awesome.

Then there are the Sasol Grand Touring Cars (GTC), which were involved in so many crashes during the first round of the festival at Kyalami last month that the fans were shouting: “Crash bash, bangers ‘n smash!”

But it was really exciting – and they wanted more.
