SHIPWRECK: SPRING TIDE COULD EXPOSE SHIP
Surfers warned of Seli 1 A buoy marks the spot where the Seli 1 is currently lying. PHOTO: CITY OF CAPE TOWN

S
urfers and kite-surfers drifting too near the MV Seli 1 shipwreck far out at sea in Table Bay have been warned by the City of Cape Town to best stay clear as the ship often still gets exposed. A buoy has now been placed in the ocean near the wreck to indicate the location of the Turkish bulk carrier. “To all the surfers and kite-surfers, you
will notice that a buoy has been placed in the ocean where the Seli 1 wreck is. “It was brought to our attention that during spring tide the wreck would be exposed at times, so this is for your safety. “We are waiting on assistance from the navy to dismantle the wreck further, so this is an interim measure. Please do let us know if you notice it missing at any point,” reads the warning, which was issued by ward 107 councillor Nicky Rheeder on social media last week. Rheeder told the newspaper last week
11 tydskrifte + 35 koerante
that she had been informed about the exposed ship during a meeting with local kite-surfers on Monday 15 October. She indicated that at the moment, there is still no timeframe as to when exactly the dismantling of the vessel will take place. TygerBurger is still waiting on comment from the South African Navy about when the dismantling will commence. The Seli 1, which had experienced engine failure in strong windy conditions according to internet sources, ran ashore
near Table View Beach in September 2009. The accident resulted in heavy oil spills which put a lot of marine life at stake. Back then the removal of the ship from the shoreline, which included the use of dangerous explosives, took approximately six weeks. It was reported at the time that the ship’s owners abandoned the Seli 1 after it ran aground. V What is your opinion on this article? Let us know at briewe@tygerburger.co.za.
