DURBANVILLE: CHURCH YOUTH LEADER REARRESTED AT NEW HOME
‘Catfish’ caught again NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk
A
church youth leader in Rondebosch facing numerous charges relating to sexual grooming of teenage boys appeared in court last week after he was rearrested at his new dwelling in Durbanville. The man (26) was first arrested in September last year after he allegedly sexually
groomed scores of teenage boys and congregants at Common Ground Church. He cannot be identified because he has not yet pleaded. The suspect, who also worked as a school sports photographer, allegedly posed as sexy teenage girls – a process referred to as “catfishing” – on Instagram and WhatsApp and lured teenage boys into sending him naked photographs of themselves. If they refused he would threaten to expose
them on social media. He was arrested when a congregant’s parents realised their son was an alleged victim. After the suspect’s first court appearances at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court and subsequent release on bail, he moved to an address in Durbanville. Here the suspect, a UCT master’s graduate, lived for a few months before being rearrested two weeks ago in connection with
charges relating to the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act. It is uncertain whether any victims are from the northern suburbs. He was set to apply for bail in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, but his case was postponed to May. He is being held at Goodwood Prison. VWhat is your opinion on this article?
