The Transformers Exhibition is coming to GrandWest, taking place from Friday 10 November 2017 to Sunday 21 January 2018. It features 14 animatronic Transformers and several sculptures and statues in varying sizes, displayed over 2500m² of floor space! The exhibits are made from reused car parts, metal and other repurposed materials. The setup takes over 20 days to build. Here are (from left) Mateo van Wyk (Plattekloof), Colby Vlok (Kleinbosch) and Sienna van Wyk (Plattekloof) at the Transformers prelaunch event held at Reeds N1 City last Thursday 26 October. hile the latest crime statistics for the period April 2016 to March 2017, released last Tuesday by police minister Fikile Mbalula, revealed that 19 016 people had been murdered in South Africa during that period, Bothasig police have recorded no murders in the last three years. There was one attempted murder as opposed to five in the previous year. National crime statistics revealed an increase in violent crime such as murder (+ 1.8%), attempted murder (+0.4%) and robbery with aggravating circumstances (+6.4%), while there was a decrease in common assault (-5.2%) and common robbery (-1.3%). For Bothasig this situation was reversed – robbery with aggravating circumstances showed a 10.2% decrease from 49 cases down to 44. Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm dropped from 16 cases to 10 (-37.5%), the lowest in eight years. Common assault showed an increase of 28.1% from 89 to 114 cases, while common robbery showed a 36.4% increase from 22 to 30 cases. Bothasig police recorded two cases of carjacking and zero cash-in-transit robberies. There has been only one cash-in-transit robbery in Bothasig in the last 10 years (in

2015-’16). Robbery at residential premises more than doubled from five cases to 13, while robbery at non-residential premises went from three to six cases. Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Jacobs, station commander of Bothasig police, says the fact that many of the robbery cases are sporadic makes it challenging to police. He says people need to be smarter than the criminals and minimise the opportunities to commit crime by “stashing, not flashing” valuable items. Burglary at residential premises has shown a steady decline over the past five years, from 417 cases in 2012-’13 to 239 cases at present. Burglary at non-residential premises declined from 19 to 15 cases. Fifty motor vehicles (including motorcycles) were stolen – three more than the previous year. Theft out of or from a motor vehicle dropped from 192 to 182 cases. Neighbouring Goodwood saw 496 cases of theft out of vehicles and 255 stolen vehicles, while Milnerton reported 189 stolen vehicles and 596 cases of theft out of vehicles. In Parow there were 284 stolen vehicles and 856 cases of theft out of vehicles. Cape Town Central had the most cases nationally with 3770, and Bellville placed sixth nationally with 1454 cases of theft out of or from a vehicle. V To page 2.
