Going grey for a good cause The Morningstar Knit Stars, a group of about 10 women from Morningstar, took part in a knitathon at the Wimpy in Durbanville this past Saturday morning. They are knitting grey blankets, which are “pixels” in a Massive Mandela Mosaic blanket – a huge blanket that will consist of 1 764 smaller blankets. It will be displayed on 24 April 2018 at Zondewater Correctional Service in Pretoria to mark 24 years of democracy and Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday next year. It will take about three days to lay out and sew together the blanket. People all over the world are currently taking part in this project. It is also an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the world’s biggest mosaic blanket. “The reason why we had a knitathon at Wimpy was to encourage the women and to create some excitement, because it becomes boring to knit in grey only,” says Elizabeth Maarman, coordinator of the project in Morningstar. They handed over seven grey blankets to Sandi King, Western Cape ambassador for the 67 Blankets for Mandela Movement. Back from left are Elizabeth Maarman, Sandi King and Elizabeth Volmink. lans are underway to develop a greenfield campus for a tertiary institution in Durbanville – the first to be developed by Stadio Holdings, which is a subsidiary of the private education group Curro Holdings. This was announced last Wednesday by Dr Chris van Merwe, founder of Curro Holdings and CEO of Stadio Holdings, after he was named Business Leader of the Year by Dur-
banville Business at their end-of-year function. This function also served as a fundraising event for Huis Jabes, a home for abused women and children (see report on page 2). Van der Merwe said Stadio Holdings has reached an agreement to acquire a 7ha portion of vacant land on the corner of Okavango and Wellington roads on the periphery of Durbanville – in the Graanendal Phase 4 development that is currently being planned. This development will consist of 3 800 housing units. “The National Development Plan has set

a target to increase higher education participation to 1.6 million students by 2030. “Currently there are only about 1.2 million students enrolled at higher education institutions, of which about 150 000 are in the private sector. If we compare ourselves with the rest of the world, it should be two million. “Many learners who qualify for admission to tertiary education institutions simply do not get admission to universities. “We must all help to lower the unemployment rate of South Africa, which is current-
ly at 27.7%. “If the private sector can assist the government to widen access to higher education and job creation, Stadio will surely help in this regard,” he said. “Building more tertiary institutions is in line with the National Development Plan goal to have 1.6 million students by 2030.” Stadio, an investment holding company specialising in the acquisition and development of higher education institutions, was listed on the JSE on 3 October.
