WASTE DROPOFF: AIMS TO REDUCE ILLEGAL DUMPING
Waste not, want not in Faure JAYDEE CYSTER @jaydeecyster
T
he new R11 million Faure waste dropoff facility was opened to the public in October as a means of combating and minimising illegal dumping. The facility, located on the corner of Old Faure Road, will accept general waste from residential sources. “With the buy-in from residents, this facility will reduce illegal dumping and littering and improve the environmental health of communities,” says the City’s Mayoral Committee member for Area East, Anda Ntsodo. Upon visiting the site, TygerBurger spoke to Siya Mtshagi, an administrator at the facility, who explained how the site is run, as well as what kind of waste is allowed to be dropped off at the facility. “Residents can drop off household waste, garden waste which is classified as greens, garage waste, rubble and used motor oil in controlled amounts,” says Mtshagi. The facility also has a section dedicated to recyclable materials such as paper, plastic, glass, cans, bottles, e-waste, polystyrene, cardboard, tetrapak and metals. the City’s residential waste removal service. Trucks that weigh 1.5 tons and less will also be allowed to drop off their waste at the facility free of charge; however, those weighing more will have to drop off their waste at the Coastal Park, Bellville or Vissershok landfills. Mtshagi explains that this is merely a drop-off facility and that the waste that is collected at the site will be moved away to the landfills. The process involves arriving at the gate, where you must provide your name as well as the type of waste being dropped off. You will then be guided to the drop-off point at the facility where your waste will be disposed of. “We have a daily limit of three drop-offs per vehicle, but because the facility has just opened we are allowing for more than three drop-offs per day,” explains Mtshagi. Ward 16 councillor, Jerome Fitz, was also at the facility and says that residents should note that they can drop off their waste free of charge. “Residents should know that there is a place where they can bring their waste, especially over the festive season,” says Fitz. “Residents will soon be spring cleaning for the festive season and any waste can be brought to this facility to be disposed of in a responsible and sustainable manner.
