CRIME STATISTICS: INCREASE IN MURDER CASES FOR ELSIES RIVER AND BISHOP LAVIS

T
he national crime statistics for Elsies River and Bishop Lavis for the period April 2016 to March 2017 show that there has been a decrease in certain categories of crime, while the number of murder cases in both precincts has increased.
Elsies River Contact crime showed an overall drop of 5.3% compared to the previous year. However, murder increased from 58 to 65 cases. Attempted murder decreased from 163 to 156, sexual offences dropped from 80 to 47, while common assault decreased from 619 to 532 cases reported. Common robbery increased from 240 to 294 cases reported. Property-related crime in the precinct decreased in some categories. Burglary at nonresidential premises increased by 5.9% with 216 cases reported compared to the previous year’s 204. Burglary at residential premises decreased by 5.5% with 276 cases reported this year compared to 292 cases reported in the previous year. Theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased by 1.9% with only 153 cases reported compared to 156 reported in the previous year. Theft of or from motor vehicles dropped by 18.2% with 444 cases reported – 99 fewer than the previous year. Meanwhile, in the more serious crime category, there was a significant increase in drug-related crimes reported because of police action, with a 30.3% increase bringing the total to 1951 cases. This actually means that police clamped down harder on this crime category. Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition increased by 42 more cases reported
The national police statistics have been released for the period April 2016 to March 2017, with the results showing an increase locally in murder cases. than the 83 cases reported in the previous year. The precinct saw an increase in carjacking cases, with 28 cases reported compared to the previous year’s 19 cases.
Bishop Lavis Contact-related crime in Bishop Lavis showed an increase in most categories, with 97 cases of murder reported compared to the
previous year’s 77. Sexual assault cases decreased by 5.1% with 94 cases reported. Attempted murder cases increased by 21, bringing the total to 143 cases reported. Meanwhile there was an 11.3% drop in common assault cases, with 652 cases reported compared to the previous year’s 735 cases. There was an increase in common robbery cases, however, with 295 cases reported – 16
more than the previous year. Property-related crime in the precinct decreased in certain categories. Burglary at non-residential premises decreased by 5.8% with 146 cases reported compared to the previous year’s 155 cases. Burglary at residential premises increased by 3.8% with 14 more cases reported, bringing the total to 383 cases. V To page 2.
