CRIME STATISTICS: INCREASE IN SERIOUS CRIME

P
olice minister, Fikile Mbalula, on Tuesday 24 October released the national crime statistics for the period April 2016 to March 2017. Nationally, there has been an increase in serious crimes such as murder and aggravated robbery, with cases of murder increasing by 1.8% and aggravated robbery by 6.4%. Locally, the statistics released for the Kuils River precinct paint a more positive picture with regard to murder, with cases decreasing from 22 to 16 cases.
Transforming from boy into robot
The Transformers Exhibition is coming to GrandWest, taking place from Friday 10 November 2017 to Sunday 21 January 2018. It features 14 animatronic Transformers and several sculptures and statues in varying sizes, displayed over 2500m² of floor space! The exhibits are made from reused car parts, metal and other repurposed materials. The setup takes over 20 days to build. Increase in sexual offences There has, however, been a concerning increase in cases of sexual offences, with 88 cases being reported as opposed to last year’s 79 cases. Rape increased from 52 to 59 cases and sexual assault from 16 to 20 cases. In line with the national statistics, robbery with aggravating circumstances increased from 407 to 417 cases. Overall contact crimes, which are crimes against the person, decreased from 1622 to 1602 cases.

Other concerns include an increase in property-related crime such as burglary at residential properties, which increased from 915 to 933 cases. Theft out of motor vehicles saw a decrease from last year’s 683 to 629 cases, still remaining alarmingly high. Overall property-related crime decreased from last year’s 1949 cases to 1877 cases.
Drugrelated crime remains high Other increases include instances of malicious damage to property, which rose from 355 to 374 cases. Robbery at residential properties remains a concern, with an increase from 38 to 43 cases. Shoplifting also saw an increase with 255 cases being reported as opposed to last year’s 226. Cause for concern is drug-related crime, which has remained high, showing a minimal decrease from 1257 to 1236 cases. Due to police action, more drivers driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs were arrested, increasing from last year’s 194 cases to this year’s 274 cases.
