CRIME STATISTICS: INCREASE IN SERIOUS CRIME

P

olice minister, Fikile Mbalula, on Tuesday 24 October released the national crime statistics for the period April 2016 to March 2017.

Nationally, there has been an increase in serious crimes such as murder and aggravated robbery, with cases of murder increasing by 1.8% and aggravated robbery by 6.4%.

Locally, the statistics released for the Kuils River precinct paint a more positive picture with regard to murder, with cases decreasing from 22 to 16 cases.

Transforming from boy into robot

The Transformers Exhibition is coming to GrandWest, taking place from Friday 10 November 2017 to Sunday 21 January 2018. It features 14 animatronic Transformers and several sculptures and statues in varying sizes, displayed over 2500m² of floor space! Increase in sexual offences There has, however, been a concerning increase in cases of sexual offences, with 88 cases being reported as opposed to last year’s 79 cases. Rape increased from 52 to 59 cases and sexual assault from 16 to 20 cases.

In line with the national statistics, robbery with aggravating circumstances increased from 407 to 417 cases.

Overall contact crimes, which are crimes against the person, decreased from 1622 to 1602 cases.

Other concerns include an increase in property-related crime such as burglary at residential properties, which increased from 915 to 933 cases. Theft out of motor vehicles saw a decrease from last year’s 683 to 629 cases, still remaining alarmingly high. Overall property-related crime decreased from last year’s 1949 cases to 1877 cases.

Drug­related crime remains high Other increases include instances of malicious damage to property, which rose from 355 to 374 cases.

Robbery at residential properties remains a concern, with an increase from 38 to 43 cases. Shoplifting also saw an increase with 255 cases being reported as opposed to last year’s 226.

Cause for concern is drug-related crime, which has remained high, showing a minimal decrease from 1257 to 1236 cases.

Due to police action, more drivers driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs were arrested, increasing from last year’s 194 cases to this year’s 274 cases.

Walking for awareness T

he Eerste River Cancer Support Group held their second annual Cancer Awareness Walkathon on Saturday 14 October.

Over 200 participants, both young and old, gathered at the Eerste River Mall parking lot to start the 10km walk organised by the Community Women Action (CWA) Centre.

In support of the walkathon, ward councillor Jerome Fitz also attended, cheering on the ladies dressed in pink and acting as walkathon leader.

The ladies wore pink skirts as a means of supporting cancer awareness, as well as promoting fitness and a healthy lifestyle.

Once the participants completed the walk, they were awarded medals and given information about the dangers of cancer. Dr Maude Gumede, a general practitioner working at CWA in Eerste River and also in Mfuleni, provided the participants with some useful tips on how to manage cancer.

Personal testimonies from cancer survivors were also delivered.

The CWA extended their gratitude to the role players who made the event possible, Participants in the CWA Cancer Awareness Walkathon being addressed by Dr Maude Gumede. namely the AFM Church, the Eerste River Athletics Club, The Ark for Men, Kleinvlei police, the CPF, Traffic Services, the marshals who assisted, Old Mutual, the Calvinist Protestant Church in Matroosfontein and the cancer survivors and their families who attended.

CWA also held a follow-up meeting after the walk as a means of assessing the event and the support group.

The Eerste River Cancer Support group will gather every first Thursday of the month from the beginning of 2018.

CWA is also in need of a voluntary social worker who can support the group, as CWA is a non-profit organisation and is not funded or subsidised by the government.

According to Joan Mouton from CWA, cancer is on the increase in the community and Cansa does not always have a social worker available to assist with the counselling of patients and families affected by cancer. “CWA is dependent on volunteers to render a service to the community,” says Mouton.

Foutiewe rekening oplaas reggestel DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke Na ’n stryd van 12 maande is ’n inwoner van Kuilsrivier se reuse- foutiewe waterrekening uiteindelik reggestel.

“Die R6 000-rekening het voortgespruit uit die Stad se onbevoegdheid om ’n waterlek binne 24 uur reg te maak,” sê Vaughan du Toit.

Die water het vir drie weke lank in die straat afgeloop ten spyte van verskeie oproepe na die Stad se 0860-nommer.

Du Toit het die waterlek by sy watermeter verlede jaar op 2 November aangemeld. “Ek het die munisipaliteit se 0860nommer gebel om dit aan te meld. Daar is vir my gesê dat die fout binne 24 uur reggemaak sal word.”

Dit het egter nie gebeur nie.

“Elke keer as ek gebel het, is die versoek blykbaar opgegradeer na ‘dringend’, maar steeds het ek geen diens gekry nie. Uiteindelik het ek ook ’n e-pos aan die DA en die burgemeester se kantoor gestuur, juis omdat daar so ’n ernstige waterskaarste is,” vertel hy. Die lek is toe reggemaak, maar Du Toit het as gevolg daarvan ’n massiewe waterrekening van oor die R6 000 ontvang.

“Ek het die foutiewe rekening, en die rede daarvoor ook aan die Stad gerapporteer, maar ek het vir nege maande geen reaksie gekry nie,” sê hy.

“Ek het dit duidelik gestel dat ek weier om die R6 000 te betaal omdat dit geensins ’n vermorsing van water aan ons kant was nie.

“Die enigste reaksie wat ons wel gekry het, is dat stadsamptenare elke nou en dan hier by ons opgedaag het met ’n waarskuwing dat ons water beperk gaan

word indien ons nie die rekening betaal nie. Dan bel ek maar weer die 0860-nommer om die probleem te verduidelik,” sê hy. Weer is talle briewe en e-posse gestuur en is daar belowe dat Du Toit se foutiewe rekening reggestel sou word. Maar dit het ook nie gebeur nie.

“Ons was heeltemal magteloos, want die enigste kontak met die munisipaliteit is deur die 0860-nommer.”

Teen September is hul watertoevoer gevolglik beperk en het Du Toit ’n waarskuwing van die stadsbestuurder gekry dat as hy nie die R6 000 betaal nie, die geld van hul elektrisiteitsrekening verhaal sal word elke keer wanneer hulle krag koop. ’n Desperate Du Toit het hom toe tot die media gewend.

Nadat TygerBurger in Oktober ’n medianavraag hieroor aan die Stad gestuur het, is Du Toit se foutiewe rekening binne ’n paar dae reggestel, maar sonder dat die Stad enige verduideliking verskaf het. In ’n mediaverklaring aan TygerBurger het die burgemeesterskomiteelid vir water slegs gemeld dat die Stad Du Toit direk sal kontak.

“Geen van ons vrae met betrekking tot die kwessie is beantwoord nie.

“Ná amper ’n jaar se gesukkel met baie oproepe en e-posse na die munisipaliteit en selfs die DA – waartydens my pleidooi om die saak af te handel net eenvoudig deur almal geïgnoreer is, het die hele waterlek- en waterrekening-sage nou uiteindelik tot ’n aanvaarbare einde gekom,” sê Du Toit. “Maar die twee vrae wat ek nog steeds het, is: Hoekom het dit amper drie weke geneem om ’n waterlek te herstel? En hoekom kon niemand in amper ’n jaar se tyd aandag gee aan my foutiewe rekening nie?”

Learners get money savvy DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke Grade 11 learners from Soneike High School in Kuils River recently became more money savvy after taking part in Metropolitan’s Kickstarz Literacy Programme.

The programme teaches financial literacy to youngsters and their parents.

“Educating young South Africans about the fundamentals of using money wisely should be a national priority,” says Elsie Govender, CSI manager at Metropolitan.

She believes that low financial literacy is the primary cause of the widespread problems with personal finances, and the place to tackle that is in our schools and universities.

The Kickstarz programme of activities and workshops is designed to teach money management to school learners. It was

launched last year in Johannesburg and rolled out to schools in the Western Cape during 2017.

It has been implemented at six schools, reaching close to 1300 learners, with the aim to increase next year.

Financial master classes presented to parents during the programme explain topics like budgeting, managing debt and how to help their kids prepare for leaving home.

Govender believes Kickstarz has great potential to make a significant difference, as it is a really engaging and fun way to communicate the essentials of money management. “As a financial services company, we have a huge responsibility in the area of improving the financial wellness of people and communities.”

City wants to take over urban rail O

n Thursday morning the full council of the City of Cape Town approved a business plan for the assignment of the urban rail function to the City of Cape Town.

“The City’s Transport and Urban Development Authority (TDA) will now approach the national government for the necessary approvals and funding for taking over commuter rail in an incremental and structural manner,” said Mayco member for transport and urban development, Brett Herron, in a statement last week.

“We will now commence with our strategy for getting urban rail back on track. Our business plan is the first step in this process, which entails a detailed due diligence and planning phase. This phase is to be concluded within the next two to three years, following which we will present an Assignment Implementation Plan and a Rail Master Plan to council for approval,” he said.

“I want to state from the outset that taking over the urban rail function will not happen overnight.

We have to do a thorough investigation of all of the risks – in particular as they pertain to funding – and then devise an implementation plan to mitigate these risks through an incremental takeover.”

“This means we have to restore commuters’ faith in passenger rail by ensuring that the service is punctual, with at least 80% of trains running on time, and that we have enough rolling stock to meet the passenger demand. Commuters must feel safe at our stations and on our trains, and the service must be integrated with other modes of public transport so that commuters can easily transfer from a bus to a train to a minibus taxi,” he said.

Commuters must also be able to use one method of payment, meaning one payment system that can be used for all public transport services, be it for travelling on a MyCiTi bus or by train.

Herron said that this is a mammoth task, but that the City is determined to rescue urban rail and to restore it to what it has been and should be – the backbone of public transport in Cape Town.

“For the City to fix passenger rail we will have to take over all of the assets required to provide the service – from the stations and the land the assets are located on, to the tracks, signalling system, and the existing and new rolling stock to be allocated to Cape Town through the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa’s (PRASA) recapitalisation programme.

“Furthermore, to improve and enforce service standards relating to punctuality, safety and security, maintenance and customer service, the City must be the contracting authority. In other words, the City must be granted the authority for drawing up and awarding the operating contracts to those rail operators that will be running the six existing commuter lines, and all future lines,” Herron said.

“I want to assure residents and those who are concerned about the financial risks involved that we will not be taking over any unfunded mandates,” he said.

Herron told TygerBurger that the funds required to do the initial planning for the takeover are estimated at R20 million in the 2018/19 financial year; R35 million in the 2019/20 financial year; and R40 million in the 2020/21 financial year.

Herron stated that the City will also investigate the feasibility of alternative rail solutions such as light rail, sky rail, monorail, and urban cable car. “Alternative rail solutions could be implemented as part of the City’s comprehensive integrated transport plan or in areas where they could be more economically viable than other modes of public transport, in particular areas such as for example the northern suburbs where commuters’ options for public transport services are currently limited,” he said.

Delft ECD centre opened The City of Cape Town’s Delft Early Childhood Development Centre (ECD), built at a cost of just over R12.5m, can accommodate 196 children and boasts a number of environmentally friendly features.

It was officially opened on Monday 30 October.

This ECD was first conceptualised in 2014 and is the first facility in the Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department’s ECD portfolio that is constructed using predominantly alternative building methods. The building comprises a steel-frame structure enhanced by tyres, eco-bricks, glass bottles, straw bales, compressed earth bricks, and cob (a mixture of clay, straw and sand).

Reclaimed construction materials were also used, including pavers taken from a demolition site. As a result, the building was about 30% cheaper to construct than a conventional structure.

An operator has been appointed, with enrolments for 2018 set to start soon.

The City’s Mayco member for safety and security and social services, JP Smith, says this is an important development for the community of Delft. “We know that there is a dire shortage of quality ECD facilities in Cape Town and in fact the country. This fa-

cility will help relieve some of the pressure, but the reality is that we need to do much more to fast-track access to ECDs that meet the requirements of the Children’s Act.” Smith says the importance of foundation phase learning in a safe and secure environment cannot be underestimated.

“Research has shown that it can have a profound impact on the rest of a child’s life,” Smith says.

This project also included a significant community upliftment component, incorporating local labour and a transfer of skills in alternative building methods.

The Natural Building Collective trained the local community in the construction of tyre-and-bottle walls, cob-and-clay plaster, and the manufacturing of clay bricks, among others. The collective has also donated a training centre to the City that will be situated at the ECD. The centre will continue training residents in the use of alternative building methods.

Mayco member for Area Central, Siyabulela Mamkeli, says there are a number of lessons to take from this ECD project. “What started as an idea for a quality learning facility for children has evolved into something that has much wider benefit for the community at large,” he says.

Die Laerskool Mikro se leerlingraad het op Vrydag 20 Oktober sy liefdadig­ heidsprojek vir die kwartaal bekendge­ stel. Die projek vir die kwartaal behels die verkoop van bandanas wat die leerders op 15 en 17 November skool toe mag dra. Al die fondse wat ingesamel word, word aan Kansa geskenk. Die projek was die idee van een van die leerlingraadslede, Ilané Venter. Haar ma, Lylanie, sê die projek lê baie na aan haar dogter se hart, want sy het ’n vriendin op 10 jaar oud aan kanker afgestaan. Die bandanas word verkoop vir R 10 elk. Hier is Ilané met die plakkaat wat sy gemaak het vir die liefdadigheidsprojek.

Ilané Venter stel die Laerskool Mikro se liefdadigheidsprojek vir die kwartaal op Vrydag 20 Oktober bekend.

nly 6% of children who enter the school system in South Africa will complete university degrees, whereas only between 10% and 15% of all South African schools will produce learners who can pursue careers in the scientific, mathematical and engineering fields.

These are only a few of the bleak facts emphasised by former finance minister, Trevor

The annual fundraiser was held at D’Aria Wine Estate in Durbanville on Friday evening.

KMF, a non-profit organisation, was founded by philanthropist Richard Mason in 1999, to provide quality schooling and societal support for deserving children from disadvantaged areas.

“By creating opportunities for talented youngsters, we create a generation of people who can transcend the differences of the past to build into a new future, bravely and solidly,” said Manual.

“If we don’t, we become a nation that fails itself. In such issues we simply don’t have a choice but to build a nation of successful people.”

In his address, Mason said that there is nothing to equal the joy of helping a young person find his or her true potential.

“Miracles do exist. They happen because one person does something kind,” he said.

Kanya Gulwa and Asongezwa Sitwebile are only two of the learners for whom KMF has been the light in a very dark tunnel.

Kanya, who joined the programme in her Grade 6 year, was one of three children of a single mother who had to support her entire family with only her factory job.

This year she graduated summa cum laude in Information Systems.

“For me, joining KMF was an answer to a prayer,” she said.

Asongezwa, who was recruited from a township school, is currently in his final year of university, completing his degree in Computer Science.

Daarna het hulle ten minste vier ander skote gehoor.

Lombard vertel hy het toe sy personeel toegesluit. “Maar hulle (die personeel) het gesê hulle kan nie net hier sit nie.”

Talle verpleegpersoneel is toe saam met Lombard na onder waar hulle noodhulp op die man en vrou toegepas het.

“Volgens inligting het ’n man ’n perseel betree waar hy ’n vrou geskiet en gewond het, voordat hy homself geskiet het. Albei slagoffers is na die hospitaal vervoer waar die man weens sy beserings gesterf het.”

New youth outreach launched JAY­DEE CYSTER @jaydeecyster

P

astors Charles and Bronwyn Bell call the launch of their new outreach organisation, New Generation Outreach, the birth of something new.

The organisation, which will be run from Hillcrest Hall along Blue Downs Way, will focus specifically on the youth.

According to Pastor Charles Bell, he always felt that he should be working with young people, but that it took him some time to realise what was required of him.

“The Lord told me not to put them in a church, but to put them in a house,” says Bell. “We really had to focus on determining where God wants to take us with this outreach.”

New Generation, which launched on Sun-

day, will hold weekly Sunday services at Hillcrest Hall. The organisation has also established the New Generation Cadets in partnership with the Eerste River Cadets.

In January they will target 21 schools in the area as a means of recruiting members for the cadets. According to Pastor Bronwyn Bell, the reason for starting the cadets is to get children who are out of school back into school. “We really hope to instil discipline in the lives of these children,” she says.

“We want to create a pride of space and self,” says Pastor Charles. Both agree that by providing children with a uniform and teaching them to work together by means of synchronised marching, they will please the hearts of their parents and residents in the area.

“We need to get our kids out of the hands of the gangsters,” says Pastor Charles.

“Everyone’s journey of coming to the Lord is different, and sometimes when you try and help these children you can actually cause more damage,” says Pastor Bronwyn.

She says that their function is simply to create a “home” where the youth can come to be close to God. “What is sad is that gangsters are working and recruiting twice as hard as the Church,” says Pastor Charles.

“Our role will be to combat this problem and to bring them into a house.”

In December, New Generation will host a memorial service for the “fallen victims” who have lost their lives due to violence within the community. “We want to acknowledge what these families have gone through,” says Pastor Bronwyn.

Both young and old are welcome to attend Sunday services at Hillcrest Hall.

The u.13 rugby team from Rainbow Primary School was lucky enough to attend the semi­final game between the Lions and Western Province at Newlands on Sunday 21 October.

n Saturday 21 October the u.13 rugby team from Rainbow Primary School in Wesbank visited Newlands Rugby Stadium to watch the semi-final match between Western Province and the Lions.

What was an exciting event for all the boys was made possible by the ATKV Wesbank branch and Western Province Rugby.

“The boys were very excited to attend the game,” says coach Zandre Allen.

WP Rugby also sponsored the team with T-shirts.

Allen says the experience was a special one for the team, as it was the first visit to the rugby stadium for all the boys. “The boys always see Newlands on TV, and for them to be at the stadium, watching a game, was a wonderful experience,” says Allen.

Allen says that the school was especially supportive of the team in organising a bus for the boys to be transported to Newlands

and providing each player with a lunch pack.

Allen says that watching the game has inspired the boys to want to improve their game. “When you see players play on another level it inspires you to want to step up your game as well,” says Allen. He says that taking the boys out of the crime-driven environment in Wesbank is important as it helps in changing their mindsets, which are often influenced by the criminal activities in the area.

Allen also relays how excited the boys were to see Wilfred Cupido, who coached them at the Western Province Performance Centre a few weeks ago. “The boys embraced Wilfred Cupido because they were so excited to see him,” says Allen.

Allen says that the development-type of programmes and experiences the boys have undergone in the past few weeks have positively influenced the boys not only on the rugby field, but also in terms of discipline in the classroom.

Net die boewe doen nou die ‘moerwerk’ Suid-Afrika se jongste misdaadstatistiek is soos élke vorige jaar net nog skokkender. Die feit dat gemiddeld 52 mense per dag hier vermoor word, maak ons land veel gevaarliker as die meeste oorloggeteisterde gebiede in die wêreld.

Dit is onder meer ’n massiewe aanklag teen ons polisie, wat veronderstel is om sy land se burgery teen misdadigers te beskerm.

Suid-Afrika is soos ’n wankelende vuisvoos-bokser wat nie nog één hou kan absorbeer nie. Want genoeg is waaragtig genoeg.

Onskuldige mense word op ’n streep wreedaardig vermoor; bendes skiet soos cowboys op mekaar by lughawens; dwaalkoeëls vlieg soos ongeleide missiele oor woongebiede waar die polisie-teenwoordigheid op sy laagste in die land is; rooftogte word deur kriminele uitgevoer met die polisie se (verlore en gesteelde) R5-aanvalsgewere in hul hande; taxi-geweld vier openlik hoogty; moordenaars systap die howe omdat dossiere nie na behore deur lede van die polisie ingevul word nie; of omdat gemeenskappe, wat afhanklik is van bendes se “gunste en gawes”, leidrade op die misdaadtonele vernietig. Boonop raak inbrekers en kapers jaarliks net bedrywiger.

Meer as ’n daadwerklike ingryping is nou dringend nodig.

En dit gaan veel meer verg as ons breedsprakige minister van polisie se kinderagtige “moer hulle”-strydkreet.

Want op die oomblik doen net die kriminele die “moerwerk”. ’n Goeie beginpunt sal wees om van die polisie se oënskynlik onbevoegde topstruktuur (wat deur hul korrupte politieke kornuite in daardie magsposisies geplaas is) ontslae te raak.

Daarmee kan die minister van polisie nie veel langer tyd verspil nie. Gooi hierdie spul teen die spoed van wit lig van die soustrein af en vervang hulle met geregsdienaars wat ’n verskil gaan maak, want ’n mens glo daar is nog talle ervare en bevoegde polisielede om die misdaadgolf te stuit – ook mense wat deur voorbeeld kan lei.

Dit is ongelukkig so dat ’n vis van bo af vrot, soos wat ons land lankal met sy politieke leiers ervaar het.

City must stand together in crisis Rationing through advanced pressure reduction has been ongoing for the past few weeks as part of the City of Cape Town’s engineered solutions to reduce pressure and lower water usage to the required levels, thus stretching water supplies.

Since March this year, the City has been conducting various engineering programmes in an effort to reduce water usage, including pressure management, enhanced leak repairs (Cape Town is now the leading municipality in South Africa with a leak rate of 14.7% compared with the national average of 37%), and the implementation of a largescale augmentation programme. Some weeks ago, the pressure management programme was scaled up into an advanced pressure reduction initiative across the metro.

If an area is trying to draw more water than the reduced pressure can accommodate, available water will reduce to a trickle or no water for a period of time to some users higher up in a pressure zone (there can be more than one in an area) until the demand is reduced to match the pressure.

Therefore it is in everyone’s interest to stick to the water restriction limits so that if your property is located in a lower lying area, your water usage does not have a direct influence on other areas that are situated in a higher lying area.

Reconsider your water usage during peak water usage times. Flatten out the peak by showering (for less than two minutes, please) later in the evening or before

06:00 in the morning, or do your washing after 21:00, as an example. Check for updates on advanced pressure management on CTAlerts (www.twitter.com/cityofctalerts) and the City’s website (www.capetown.gov.za/thinkwater).

We will, with the help of Team Cape Town, continue to do absolutely everything in our power to ensure that we not only survive this crisis, but thrive as a more resilient city in the future.

Apart from all of our City interventions, we all still need to save as much water as possible. We thank Cape Town for helping us reduce collective water usage from 1.1 billion litres per day to below 600 million litres per day. Together we really have made an amazing effort and we can only reduce usage further, together.

comes time for the elections, who do you think we in Kraaifontein will be voting for? Surely not for the DA! And that is a lot of votes to lose.

Even thieves are water conscious!

I would like to share the story of my water-conscious tap thief from Belgravia, Bellville.

On Monday evening I discovered that I did not have water.

When I contacted the municipality on Tuesday morning, they sent Warren out to my premises. (He arrived within 50 minutes of me reporting the problem!)

He phoned me at work to report that he had discovered that my stopcock was closed.

When he opened it up, he saw that somebody had stolen my outside tap, as it started gushing water.

Warren fixed the problem with regard to my outside tap to ensure that the stopcock could be opened up again.

We should all be thankful to the thief that he was considerate enough to ensure that no water was wasted during his thieving escapade.

Instead of letting the water run freely into the street, the thief was water conscious enough to close my stopcock.

Let’s keep saving water!

Retailers also to blame for problem Regarding the feature in this week’s TygerBurger (“Dumping a disaster”, 25/10): There is one problem that has concerned me for a long time, and that is the removal of trolleys from shopping centres. My local mall has some parking bays at the back, very close to an exit, and this is a prime area where trolleys are being taken out. But do the retailers there bother to make sure there is a person there at all times to prevent this theft?

No! Surely the employment of guards at all exits would cost less than the replacement of the trolleys, or am I wrong?

The retailers don’t seem to care, so I think they are largely responsible for contributing to this ongoing headache.

Motiveringskabaret oor ’n ‘break­up’ ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme

I

s jy so pas afgesê en sit met ’n sak verwerping op jou skoot? Vang jy soms jouself snags laat met ’n mandjie kos in die bed? Het jy ’n bottel van sy of haar spuitgoed gekoop om dit vir “oulaas” te ruik?

Die seerkry wat ’n jong aktrise ervaar het ná ’n liefdesverhouding verbreek is, het haar geïnspireer om ’n motiveringskabaret te skryf oor die berge en dale van ’n break-up, en om mense te motiveer om hulself lief te hê.

Die aktrise, liedjieskrywer en sangeres Loané van Sandwyk (24) voer haar komiese kabaret, Dis nie ek nie, dis jy, op Saterdag 11 November vanaf 19:30 by die Collective Arts-teater in Frans Conradie-rylaan in Bellville op.

Loané het haar BA (drama- en teaterstudies) in 2014 aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat voltooi en het in 2015 ’n honneursgraad in kabaret aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch voltooi.

Sy bied ook praatjies vir meisies by skole aan. “Ek wil hulle help om hul waarde in die Here te vind en nie toe te laat dat ander mense se woorde hulle definieer nie,” vertel sy.

Dan skryf sy nog ook liedjies, sing en het ’n YouTube-reeks, Die dinge van die lewe, aangepak.

Sy is ook een van slegs 12 Crescendo-finaliste van 2017, wat op 9 Desember aan die ATKV-Crescendo-musiekfees by die ATKV-Goudini Spa gaan deelneem.

“In daardie drie jaar het ek deur ’n see van emosies gestoei en besef hoe snaaks dit eintlik is. Die feit dat jy vir jare oor iemand kan huil wat nog lewe, dat jy elke dag die break-up-toneel in jou kop kan oorspeel en dink wat jy eintlik moes gesê het en dat jy dadelik naar is as jy hom onverwags raakloop, is eintlik absurd,” lag sy nou vir haarself.

Sy doen ’n klomp sketse en vertel tussen-in oor haar eie ervarings en sing liedjies wat sy self geskryf het. Sy begelei haarself op die kitaar, ukulele en trekklavier. “’n Mislukte verhouding is nie altyd maklik nie, en ons verstaan dit. Kom besoek ons vir ’n uur van terapie. Ons belowe nie dat jou pyn verminder sal word nie, maar hopelik sal jou maagspiere versterk word. So los daai sakdoek, klim uit die McDonald’s-ry uit en kom lag saam!” nooi sy.

Die kabaret is al by die Vrystaat-kunstefees aangebied en het intussen ook al in Pretoria, Bethlehem en op Stellenbosch gedraai.

Comedy Sundowners at GrandWest The award-winning comedian, Shimmy Isaacs, is “the rose among the thorns” at the November edition of the Hanover Street Comedy Sundowners at GrandWest.

The Worcester born and raised entertainer unleashes her savvy humour alongside Johannesburg’s Dillan Oliphant and Ndumiso Lindi, as well as Bredasdorp’s Dugald Pieterse, on Sunday 5 November.

Isaacs needs little introduction to local comedy fans. She produced her first onewoman show, Allie Pad Funny Worcester, in 2010 under the direction of well-known comedian Rob van Vuuren. In 2011, Showbiz Reports ranked her the seventh funniest comedian and actress in South Africa’s top ten comedians of the year.

In 2012, she produced Howzit my Bra, which earned her the KKNK Oudtshoorn Art Festival award for best actress in a solo performance, as well as the KykNet Fiesta award for best newcomer.

Over the years Isaacs has performed with and worked alongside top comedians including Mark Lottering, Kurt Schoonraadt, Tumi Morake, David Kau, Loyiso Golo and Mark Banks.

Seven cyclists raise spirits, hope A

team of seven cyclists took to the road on Sunday 22 October to cycle the PPA Enjoy One Tonner cycling event over 170km in aid of the local non-profit organisation Raising Hope SA. The team – consisting of pilot cyclist Brett Chilcott, buggy rider David Klinkradt and five support riders – set off just after 07:00 on their epic ride from Stellenbosch up the Helshoogte Pass to Wellington, past Riebeek Kasteel, through Malmesbury and back to Stellenbosch.

It took them 6 hours and 24 minutes to complete the route.

“Assisted along the way by strangers and supporters, the team raised both awareness and funds around the possibilities that can be achieved when able-bodied cyclists partner with disabled riders,” says Mary Klinkradt, CEO of Raising Hope SA. This organisation assists families and individuals im-

pacted by disability.

The buggy rider was her son, the 12-yearold David, who has Down syndrome, autism and epilepsy.

“He sat in the buggy for the duration of the ride. Envied by many along the way, it is something he loves and is unable to do under his own strength.

“It is an opportunity afforded to him by pilot cyclist Brett Chilcott. Together the two have completed three Cape Town cycle tours prior to this event,” Klinkradt says.

Raising Hope SA was started by her teenage daughter, Ashlyn, in 2016. The organisation assists individuals and families impacted by disability to see hope and opportunity through key projects.

Jay en Manie bring nuwe musiek Kaap toe M

anie Jackson en Jay maak gereed om hul nuwe liedjies met ’n Kaapse gehoor te deel wanneer hulle op Saterdag 9 Desember by vanjaar se Bakgat Someropskop optree.

Dié manne het albei splinternuwe albums, maar hulle is nie die enigste konserttrekpleisters nie. Vanjaar het Bakgat-Promosies besluit om ses Suid-Afrikaanse sterre te vra om deel van die makietie te wees en dus sal musiekliefhebbers optredes deur Jay en Manie, asook Wicus van der Merwe, Andriëtte Norman, Elvis Blue en Theuns Jordaan kan geniet. Familie het ook ’n sterk invloed op Jay Manie Jackson se lewe, maar vir hom was die afgelope twee jaar hartseer. Manie het heelwat familielede verloor en hy bring hulde aan hulle op sy nuwe album, Palms van my hande.

“Met al die sterftes in my familie het ek een liedjie opgedra aan hulle almal, maar daar is een liedjie wat ek geskryf het vir my broer, Jaco, wat in Julie 2016 oorlede is: ‘Die

mense in my lewe’.”

Manie se nuutste CD is ’n gospelalbum en hoewel hy ook vir sy countrymusiek bekend is, vertel Manie dat gospelmusiek altyd deel van sy lewe sal wees. “My groot liefde is gospelmusiek. Ek is ’n boerseun wat van die plaas af kom, maar kom ook uit ’n predikantfamilie.” Anders as met sy vorige albums, het Manie die keer baie meer liedjies van plaaslike skrywers opgeneem. Hy’t ook met die sangers Pieter Moore en Angel de Lange en die vervaardiger Dennis East saamgewerk. Palms van my hande is die agste album wat Manie saam met die country-legende East opgeneem het.

Transformers to descend on GrandWest I

n less than a month the Transformers Exhibition will see Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron and the Rescue Bots descend on GrandWest for the last leg of the Transformers Exhibition’s South African tour.

The immersive and interactive exhibition will take place from Friday 10 November 2017 to Sunday 21 January 2018 and will feature 14 animatronic Transformers, nine sculptures scaled between two and nine metres, and another 20 statues of varying sizes, all made from reused car parts, metal and other repurposed materials. The display spans over 2500m2 of floor space and takes over 20 days to build.

The exhibition depicts the rise of the Transformers, from the iconic 1980s animated generation to the new-age Rescue Bots and the incredible scrap metal sculptures that represent the Transformers we know today.

The exhibition also features a kids’ area where young Transformer fans can have their photos taken with Bumblebee and Optimus Prime costume characters, participate in colouring in and Lego building, play games, get Transformers “tattoos”, watch movies and go wild on a jumping castle.

The exhibition is not only a fun-filled family outing, but also an educational experience during which children can work through the free downloadable Transformers workbook.

Using Transformers as the theme, the 17page workbook covers foundation phase subjects such as Maths, Language and Life Skills as a means of keeping children engaged before, during and after attending the exhibition.

“Sun Exhibits will be completely transformed for this exhibition, which offers parents a fantastic option for keeping children entertained. The exhibition should also be of interest to schools taking learners on endof-year outings,” says GrandWest’s PR and promotions manager, Elouise Matthys.

Tickets are sold per entry slot and visitors can spend as much time as they’d like at the exhibition.

The exhibition will be open daily between 10 November 2017 and 21 January 2018, from 10:00 to 19:00. Tickets are available at www.webtickets.co.za and are priced at R99 (R89 for pensioners, students and children aged four to seven).

A sneak­peak event ahead of the Transformer Animatronics Exhibition, which opens at GrandWest on Friday 10 November, was held at Reeds N1 City last Thursday 26 October (Reeds being the official vehicle partner).

School of Champions excels again STEHAN SCHOEMAN

T

he Northpine Samurai School of Karate, also known as The School of Champions since 1983, has once again produced students who have qualified to represent South Africa at a world karate championship.

Thirty-nine students will travel to Stockholm, Sweden, in July next year to compete in the 19th Kimura Shukokai World Championships.

The world championships are held once every two years. In the last three consecutive world championships, in 2012, 2014 and 2016, South Africa has placed first overall.

South Africa has a proud record of five first places out of 22 countries since first competing on the world stage in 1998.

The school is the central school for the Boland/Cape Winelands region for samurai karate schools from as far as Paarl, Franschhoek, Villiersdorp and Bredasdorp.

Although students train in the Northpine Community Hall with little else but a bare floor, many world, national and provincial

karate champions were “born” here.

Currently there are eight world champions who train at this venue.

Senior instructor, Sensei Chris Ensil, is also the national coach for Kimura Shukokai Karate in South Africa.

Three learners from two local schools in Northpine will be representing South Africa in Sweden. They are Ethen Jacobs (Northpine Primary School), Tyler Moss and Tyrese Williams (both from Brooklands Primary). These dedicated karateka have already started preparing for next year’s world championships with Sensei Caleb Howard (who is also in the national team) and Sensei Chris Ensil.

The classes are on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 18:00 to 19:00 for beginners and from 19:00 to 20:00 for senior grade students. There is also a class on Saturday mornings from 08:00 to 10:00.

Members of the public are welcome to join in a class at Northpine Community Hall on the above-mentioned days.

Bellville, Durbies en UWK begin uitstekend Dit was die afgelope naweek ’n uitstekende begin vir Bellville, Durbanville en die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland in die WP se tweedaagse Premierliga-krieketkompetisie.

Maar vir die twee debutante, Milnerton en Brackenfell, het sake minder suksesvol verloop. Aaron Thomason (4/18) en Daniel Childs (3/21) het vir Bellville die afrondingswerk gedoen in sy sege met 38 lopies oor Kaapstad, terwyl Kuda Samunderu (4/44) en Jean Strydom (43*) bygedra het tot Durbanville se agtpaatjie-sege oor Victoria. In UWK (341/4 gesl.) se weghol-oorwinning met ’n beurt en 49 lopies oor Langa was Idaa Isaacs

Luan secures his spot on the podium Little Luan Mostert from Brackenfell completed his first full season of karting by not only taking third in the Western Province u.8 Cadet Championship race at the last turn at Killarney a fortnight ago, but the young man also made a huge statement by turning up with his kart all dressed up in pink to celebrate his AMV team’s R5000 donation to the Pink Drive in support of breast cancer awareness.

The Grade 1 learner at Bastion Primary School then moved up to clinch third in the championship with a fine third place on the day.

“We knew what we had to do today,” Luan says. “But it was not going to be easy! I qualified well but we were only fourth. Eric Norman, Ethan Deacon and I were seven-thousandths of a second apart on the grid. Wow, it was so close!

“Then race 1 was also very close. Ethan beat me to third by a tenth of a second, but the second race was a problem. I spun on the fifth lap and lost a lap so I was only fifth, but I fought back to third in the last

race.

“So we ended up third for the day, but I was able to wrap up third in the championship and I am very happy with that!

Next year some of the more experienced guys go up to bigger classes, so we will be fighting for my first win and many more too.

“Thanks so much to everyone for all the help and support – Uncle Kito Perdigao and Uncle Luke Herring, my mom and dad, and Nono Franco Donadio.”

As proud as he was to take third in the championship, Luan was equally delighted to raise awareness for breast cancer. “When my mom told me we were making my kart pink I was very cross and I said no!” Luan explains. “But then mom and dad sat and explained to me what it means to support the Pink Drive and I was very happy and very proud to race in pink this weekend just like all the F1 cars did! I also dared my rivals to make a contribution so we hope we are making a difference.”

Graderingskamp: Francois du Plessis se Goju­Kai­karateskool het sy jaarlikse graderingskamp onlangs by Groot Draken­ stein buite die Paarl gehou.

Meer as 150 karatekas van die Paarl, Stellenbosch en die Strand, asook die noordelike voorstede, het die kamp bygewoon en hul graderingseksamen afgelê.

Shihan Francois du Plessis (voor) is hier saam met die instrukteurs en swartgordel­ karatekas wat die kamp bygewoon het.

Brackenfell (135 en 92) het met 7 paaltjies teen Ottomans vasgeval, terwyl Milnerton met 8 paaltjies teen WP-klub verloor het.

In die eerste liga het Kraaifontein uitstekend begin deur Guguletu (89 en 69) met ’n beurt en 20 lopies te klop. Edgemead het Groenpunt met 9 paaltjies afgeransel. Noordelikes-Goodwood het met 112 lopies in die stof gebyt teen Primrose. Tygerberg-klub se Franco Kasner (66) kon ook nie verhoed dat sy span met 51 lopies pak gekry het teen Strandfontein nie. – (Sarel Burger)

Dié organisasie doen verslag oor alle skolerugby in Suid-Afrika.

Die ander twee skole wat om die titel meegeding het, was die Hoërskool Helpmekaar en Sacs. Ondersteuners van skolerugby kon op die webblad stem en Stellenberg het 130 stemme meer as sy mededingers gekry. Daarna het ’n paneel van kenners oor skolerugby besluit wie die topskool is.

Volgens Duppie du Preez, rugbykoördineerder by Stellenberg, het Stellenberg se se o.19A-span volgens Rapport en School of Rugby sewende op die top20-lys verskyn.

“Dié span was onoorwonne tydens die Wildklawertoernooi en het puik oorwinnings oor Outeniqua, Menlopark, HTS Drostdy, HTS Middelburg, Wynberg en Rondebosch behaal.

“Ons het ook met alle teenstand in ons onmiddellike omgewing, soos Brackenfell, Tygerberg, Bellville, De Kuilen en Durbanville, afgereken,” het Duppie gesê.

Die span het altesame 120 drieë in 20

wedstryde gedruk en 11 spelers het WPkleure verwerf.

“Janko Swanepoel, Angelo Davids en Josh Muller was deel van die WP se Cravenweekspan, terwyl Corné van Romburg, Nivan Petersen, André Hanekom en Jacques van Biljon die WP-Akademiespan verteenwoordig het,” het hy gesê.

André Bartes, Tharquinn Manuel en Dylan de Leeuw het die WP se Grant Khomospan gehaal, terwyl Angelo Davids as junior Blitsbok gekies is. Dylan de Leeuw is ook in SA se o.17-elitegroep opgeneem, terwyl Jessie Herborn in die WP se o.17-sewessspan en Sebastian Boshoff in die WP se o.16-elitegroep opgeneem is.

“Spelers wat beroepskontrakte by die SupeRugby-franchises vir 2018 geteken het, sluit in Janko Swanepoel (Bulle), Nicko Laubscher (Bulle), Jacques van Biljon (Cheetahs), André Hanekom (Cheetahs) en Angelo Davids by die SA Akademie-sewesspan,” het Duppie gesê. Dit bewys dat ouers nie nodig het om hul kinders na rugbyskole in die Boland of elders in die land te stuur nie ... Stellenberg is tops!

There is a saying that you can choose your friends but not your family, but Rheece Evans, right-back of Ajax Cape Town, is proud to hear of the legacy that his cousin and former captain of Ajax, Brett Evans, left behind.

“Many senior players and spectators have good memories of Brett and I’ll try not to disgrace the Evans name while I am on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns to Ajax,” Rheece chuckles.

He hails from Durban and played at age 19 for Maritzburg United before joining Sundowns in 2014.

Cape Town is not unfamiliar to him, as he started his youth career at Santos in Athlone and also at Villa Park FC. “My career at Maritzburg United started

het in Durbanville (218) se afrekening met Fairbairn (123). Michail Abrahams (51 en 3/21) het die beste vir Fairbairn vertoon. HS Tygerberg (106) het op sy herrie gekry teen Blue Bells-klub (232).

Die vernaamste uitblinker in die o.15kompetisie was Tiaan Swanepoel (Tygerberg, 111 t HS Groote Schuur), terwyl Stef Grobbelaar (Stellenberg, 112 t Pinelands) en Ruaan van der Merwe (HS Bellville, 77 t Bergvliet) die beste in die o.14-wedstryde vertoon het. . In die halfeindronde van die PNS Cape Gate-uitklopkompetisie vir o.15’s speel Curro vandag (Woensdag) teen HS Bellville, terwyl Fairmont en Milnerton mekaar sal aandurf. Fairmont het Stellenberg in die kwarteindronde uitgeskakel Curro was te sterk vir Durbanville, en so ook Milnerton (t D.F. Malan) en HS Bellville (t HS Tygerberg).

Stellenberg, Milnerton en HS Bellville het reeds hul plekke bespreek in die halfeindronde van die Manuel’s Busdiens-uitklopkompetisie vir o.14’s.

in 2010 and I made 79 appearances for the club and only scored three goals before I moved to Sundowns. The only things that I miss about Durban are the weather, family and friends. But as a professional football player, you have to make sacrifices if you want to be successful,” he says.

“For me personally, it was great coming back to Cape Town. I am privileged to help Ajax win games and help the young players in the team to grow. When I first met the fans of Ajax they reminisced about Brett and the two great years the club had in 2007/2008. I appreciate the chats with them after games as well.

“The supporters of the other two PSL clubs don’t differ much. At Maritzburg we played in front of a full stadium and they encouraged me to do my best, being a boy from KZN. At Sundowns we were winning

a lot of games and they all got behind me and made me feel welcome at the club,” Evans says.

Although he plays soccer full time he still invests time in his studies.

“I am currently studying part time for my BCom in business management at Varsity College in Rondebosch. Managing my time between my career and studies is sometimes a juggle.

“Luckily for me I can study at night online and if I have a problem can visit the lecturers at the college when I have time.

This is all part of the sacrifices that you have to make in life,” he says.

When he takes a break from studying and playing, he likes fishing and playing golf.

His focus for the rest of the season is to help Ajax win games and to improve his performance on the pitch.
