KUILS RIVER: INFORMAL TRADING PLAN APPROVED BY CITY
Trading plan in place JAYDEE CYSTER @jaydeecyster
T
he informal trading plan for the Kuils River central business district has been approved by the City of Cape Town’s council. The plan, which will create dedicated spaces from where traders can sell their goods, was approved on Thursday 26 October. With the approval of the informal trading plan for ward 11, Kuils River and the sur-
rounding areas are set to have 258 demarcated trading bays at 10 sites. The site situated in the vicinity of Shoprite on the corner of Carinus and Nooiensfontein roads, will be the biggest informal trading site (with 179 bays). Furthermore the main road in Kuils River, Van Riebeeck Road, will have 15 bays, while both Amandel and Church streets will get 20 trading bays each. The initiative was spearheaded by subcouncil 21, which initially put forward the
request for a trading plan to be developed for the area. An inclusive public participation process was followed, as stipulated in the Informal Trading Bylaw, giving interested parties the opportunity to comment on the draft informal trading plan. According to the City’s Mayco member for Area East, Ando Ntsodo, creating opportunities for residents to participate in the local economy is one of the key priorities of the City’s Organisational Development and Transformation Plan (ODTP).
“Access to the informal economy is as important as access to the formal economy, as it plays a vital role in facilitating business growth and the development of entrepreneurial skills. Informal trading creates an environment where unemployed residents can earn an income,” says Ntsodo. “Not only will the establishment of informal trading bays help to alleviate poverty in the area, it will also foster a sense of community cohesion and pride.” V To page 2.
