Silver Falcons thrill car enthusiasts at Killarney The final round of the Gumtree International Automobile Federation (FIA) World Rallycross Championship was held at a totally revamped Killarney International Raceway this past weekend – one of the biggest entertainment spectacles to hit these shores for many years. The event even attracted the SA Air Force’s Silver Falcons, who performed a smoking display during the event. PHOTO: COLIN BROWN
BEACH SAFETY: BOY’S DROWNING AT MELKBOS LEADS TO RENEWED CALLS FOR CAUTION
Summer beach safety RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj
W
ith summer just around the corner, safety on Cape Town’s beaches has once again come under the spot-
light. Just recently the body of a 14-year-old boy, Joshua Joubert, washed ashore near Melkbosstrand after the youngster went missing in the surf on Sunday 29 October. The drown-
ing has led to rescue authorities issuing renewed calls for beachgoers to exercise caution when visiting the City’s beaches. Andrew Ingram, who is responsible for the National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Waterwise Programme, explains what people should and should not do, in order to ensure their safety and that of their loved ones in the water. He says that as a first precaution, beachgoers should always try and swim at beaches
where lifeguards are on duty. “Lifeguards are generally on duty between 10:00 and 18:00 on weekends and during the week at the end of the year during school holidays. If lifeguards are not on duty, do not swim. Listen to their advice and talk to them about safety on the beach that you are visiting. They are the experts on that beach,” Ingram says. He also emphasises the importance of swimming between the lifeguards’ flags.

“Teach children that if they swim between the lifeguards’ flags, the lifeguards will be watching them and can help them if there is a problem. The lifeguards watch swimmers very carefully between the flags; just wave an arm at them if you need help,” Ingram explains. Beachgoers are also discouraged from consuming alcohol and swimming, and encouraged not to swim alone. V To page 2.
