NATIONAL CRIME STATISTICS RELEASED: SOME CRIMES SHOW DECREASE, OTHERS INCREASE

he national crime statistics for Ravensmead and Delft for the period April 2016 to March 2017 show a little hope, but also some despair.
Ravensmead Contact crime showed an overall drop of 1.2%. However, murders increased from 43 to 61 cases and attempted murders from 71 to 111 cases; sexual offences dropped from 52 to 44 and common assault from 436 to 389 cases reported. Common robbery increased from 133 to 159 cases reported. Property-related crimes in the precinct decreased in all categories. Burglary at nonresidential premises decreased by 9.2% with 139 cases reported compared to the previous year’s 153. Burglary at residential premises decreased by 11.2% with 238 cases reported this year compared to 268 cases in the previous year. Theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased by 13.0% with only 47 cases reported compared to 54 reported in the previous year. Theft of or from motor vehicles dropped by 9.2% with 33 cases reported – 37 fewer than the previous year. Meanwhile in the more serious crime category, there was a significant increase in drug-related crime addressed because of police action, with a 25.1% increase bringing the total to 1790. This actually means the police clamped down harder on this crime category. Cases of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition increased to 87 compared to the 57 cases reported in the previous year. Delft Contact-related crimes in Delft showed an increase in most categories with 183 cases of murder reported compared to the previous year’s 143. Sexual assault cases increased by 5.8% with 219 cases reported. Attempted murder increased by 27 more cases reported, bringing the total to 178. Meanwhile there was a 7.5% drop in common assault cases with only 603 cases reported compared to the previous year’s 652 cases. There was an increase in common robbery cases, with 114 cases reported – 12 more than the previous year. Property-related crimes in the precinct de-
creased in certain categories. Burglary at non-residential premises increased by 7.9% with 96 cases reported compared to the previous year’s 89 cases. Burglary at residential premises dropped by 10.9% with 85 fewer cases reported, bringing the total to 693 cases. Meanwhile, theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles also decreased by 18.5% with 34 fewer cases reported, bringing the total to 150 cases. Theft of out of or from motor vehicles increased by 15.3% with 40 more cases reported, bringing the total to 301 cases compared to the previous year’s 261 cases. Meanwhile in the more serious crime category there was a significant drop in drug-re-
lated crimes, with 2926 cases reported (513 fewer cases than the previous year). Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition increased with 195 cases reported – 26 more than the previous year. The precinct also saw an increase in cases of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs with 97 more cases reported, bringing the total to 350 cases reported. Meanwhile 712 cases of malicious damage to property were reported with an increase of 18.5% compared to the previous year’s 601 cases.
