Plastics industry helps penguins Thanks to the generosity of role players in the plastics and packaging industry, African penguins and other marine life will hopefully soon be able to receive treatment and undergo rehabilita­ tion at a brand new hospital. This comes after funds were raised for the new Sanccob Seabird Hospital recently. The South African plastics and packaging industry managed to raise R45 000 during the Propak Cape Exhibition held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, where corporates and individuals alike dug deep into their pockets by pledging funds for the much­needed seabird hospital at Sanccob’s Cape Town premises, says Monique Holtzhausen on behalf of the industry and the rehabilitation centre. A total of R5 million is needed for the new facility.

uy Fawkes celebrations had to be cut short this year due to strong winds.

This is the reason given by the City of Cape Town following Sunday night’s cancellation of the annual celebration on the Table View beachfront.

JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security and social services, confirmed this

on Monday.

“The City can confirm that the site was cleared by 20:15. At the time there were approximately 1000 people in the parking lot and on the beach.

“There were, however, still reports of people on the beach at around 22:00 and the area was monitored throughout,” Smith told TygerBurger. He said the decision to cut short the discharge of fireworks and the general festivities and to clear the area was as a re-

sult of strong winds and amid fears for public safety.

“This was one of several sites closed early for the same reasons,” Smith added.

Mandy da Matta, vice-chairperson of the Table View Ratepayers’ Association (TVRA), said the TVRA thanks fire chief Theo Layne, who was on site, for considering the safety of residents and members of the public, and for cancelling the event as the conditions on the beachfront were rath-

er perilous and posed a danger to all – even putting Law Enforcement at risk, she said.

“We are grateful that the event was cancelled and hope that the City takes steps to abandon any more of these events for the foreseeable future.

“If the George Local Municipality was able to ban fireworks for sound logical reasons, then why not the City of Cape Town?” Da Matta said.

In a statement released later on Monday Smith said the City’s Safety and Security Directorate is relieved that Guy Fawkes has come and gone after a fairly busy evening, made all the more challenging by a gusting south-easter.

“The wind conditions resulted in the early closure of many of the 12 designated sites for the discharge of fireworks because of safety considerations.

“The fire marshal on site at Maiden’s Cove made the decision to close the site as early as 19:00. A similar decision was made in Table View at 20:15,” Smith said.

He said the closures meant an increase in the number of complaints from other beach areas and open spaces in close proximity, but also an increase in the number of people at the Strandfontein and Athlone sites, which turned out to be the busiest on the night.

The City’s Joint Operations Centre recorded a total of 22 injuries – 18 of which involved children. Fifteen of these injuries were reported at the Standfontein Pavilion.

Nothing beats the bots at Transformers exhibition

he opportunity to see the long-awaited Transformers Exhibition is just around the corner!

Also available as part of the exhibition is a downloadable 17-page workbook covering foundation phase subjects such as Maths, Language and Life Skills keep children engaged before, during and after the exhibition.

Help trace fraud suspect The Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Unit is seeking the public’s assistance in tracing Alain Mukamba Wandjo (34), a Congolese citizen, who was arrested for credit card-related fraud amounting to almost R2 million in 2014.

Wandjo appeared in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crimes Court where he was granted bail, but he failed to report for subsequent court dates.

Wandjo’s last known residential address was around the Parklands area in Cape Town. Preschoolers help penguins: As one of their community outreach projects this year, Capriccio Arts Powered Preschool in Milnerton decided to help their penguin friends at Sanccob by participating in the Build 4 Penguins initiative. For every R5 coin brought to school, the little ones received a paper “fish” to “feed” their class “penguin”. They managed to fill the penguin’s “tummy” up and raised a total of R1000 in support of this worthy cause aimed at building a new seabird hospital. Dyanti is now in charge RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj Following initial reports regarding the replacement of Colonel Dirk Vosloo as station commander, Table View police have just announced a change in plans.

It was confirmed last week that Lieutenant Colonel Collette McLean would take over the reigns as commander after Vosloo’s redeployment to the Nyanga Police Cluster.

This week, however, the station indicated that Colonel Lindiwe Dyanti will be the person in charge.

Dyanti, according to police spokesperson Captain Adriana Chandler, will take over the post of new acting station commander on Monday 20 November.

Asked why the decision was taken to appoint Dyanti and not McLean, Chandler said this decision was made by the Western Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula.

Dyanti will occupy the position until Vosloo returns.

It is not known at this stage when this will be, Chandler says.

Vosloo was deployed to work in the Nyanga cluster for a period of three months, the police said earlier. According to information, he will be heading up an intervention team in the cluster.

No to abalone auctioning

I read your article questioning where confiscated abalone ends up (The fate of abalone”, 01/10).

I am stunned at the reply of the person referred to by the name of Moses. How does their department see fit to auction off illegal abalone?

The law does not make allowance for any State institution to unilaterally make decisions on its own where confiscations are concerned.

The law clearly states that nobody in any State body has the right to auction off an illegal confiscation.

Customs and Excise have large numbers of vehicles and a myriad of other unlawful items that have been confiscated. They have no right to take what was confiscated from perpetrators who were sentenced for their crime, and sell those wares for some fund, making an illegal case legal because they are the law.

Basically nobody can make something legal that has been declared illegal by law.

According to the law the confiscations must be destroyed under supervision.

If not, it leads to irregularities whereby the officials carrying out these sales could be construed to have “buddies” buying the goods below market prices and even selling them on to the same players. There are only five top players in the abalone market in Hong Kong. The triads act fiercely against any meddling in their market. Controlled by them in the same basket are shark fins and sea cucumbers. In my opinion, as a concerned citizen, this practice has to cease.

Tuisonderrig gebruik verskeie opvoedingsmetodes en verskeie kurrikulums.

Dit word met sorg deur die ouers gekies sodat dit in die beste belang van die kind is en word aangepas soos die kind ontwikkel.

Die kinders leer teen hulle eie tempo en kan dus vinnig in een vak vorder en stadiger in ’n ander, totdat hulle die inhoud bemeester het.

Kinders het die reg tot basiese onderrig. As ouer het ek die reg om die opvoeding wat my kind moet kry, in die kind se beste belang te kies.

Die regering moet toegang tot onderwys vir alle kinders verseker, maar behoort nie voor te skryf wat en hoe hulle moet leer nie.

Dit wil voorkom of die regering tuisonderrig streng wil inperk.

As die regering regtig bekommerd is oor die onderwys van kinders in Suid-Afrika sal hy groter vryheid toelaat in die keuse ten opsigte van opvoedingsmetodes en -benaderings, asook die leerplan.

Tuisonderrig in sy huidige formaat behoort verwelkom te word weens die reeds beperkte hulpbronne.

Council is simply passing the buck I refer to the letter of Johann regarding the DA losing votes for their bad service and planning regarding water restrictions (“Water restric-

We are made to feel guilty because the Cape Town council did not plan for the day that the additional people would arrive in Cape Town and a drought would lead to water emergencies, and now they are simply passing the buck. I have been trying to get action from the DA in Welgemoed for a year now regarding street safety measures that are blatantly abused, and they will not get my vote either due to their apathy. No longer will we vote for the DA purely because they are the strongest opposition to the ANC. The counsellors will only be heard from as we approach the next election.

Centre needs counsellors

he Hope House Counselling Centre says it is in dire need of child counsellors.

The centre was founded by Judy Strickland and recently opened a branch in the Table View area.

Strickland said recently that in the wake of 66 child murders recorded this year in the Western Cape alone, as well as a six-month delay in child abuse intervention, they are stressing the need for more qualified child counsellors to address issues of child trauma and abuse.

In order to meet the needs of the communities they serve, they need volunteer assistance from child counsellors, said Strickland. This also comes in the wake of National Children’s Day, which was celebrated on Saturday 4 November. The day aims to raise awareness around the realisation and promotion of children’s rights.

“Trauma and violence are an all too common occurrence in South Africa, whether through armed robberies, domestic abuse or divorce. Sadly, children are often caught in the crossfire,” said Strickland.

She added: “There is a dire shortage of volunteer child counsellors, and we currently have a waiting list of 48 children across our three centres who are in need of professional help.”

Childhood is a critical developmental period and children are extremely vulnerable to harmful influences around them, Strickland explained.

She emphasised the importance of trauma resolution at a young age. “The fallout of exposure to violence, abuse, loss and drug use can include impaired educational development, high levels of school drop-out rates, an increase in violence at a later age, and a greater risk of developing mental disorders such as anxiety and depression.

“Counselling enables them to voice their trauma and overcome any obstacles they may experience. Early childhood intervention will help break the cycle of abuse – a damaged child all too often becomes the adult perpetrator.”

Scooters in the spotlight The Table View-based public benefit organisation, Community Medics, says it is concerned about the number of scooter drivers involved in road accidents.

This week, spokesperson Kim Jurgens said the organisation often comes across accidents involving scooters.

“Across our divisions, one of the most common types of motorbike collisions we attend to is delivery scooter incidents.

“We are not in a position to determine whether these are from poor driving on the part of the scooter drivers, or car drivers not being observant when driving, but it is probably a bit of both,” Jurgens says. She asks that businesses that make use of delivery scooters ensure that their drivers have a valid licence, that they have their helmet strapped on properly, and that they do not ride in the blind spot of vehicles or ride next to cars along narrow roads.

“Ensure that your drivers obey the rules of the road. And most importantly, ensure that an employee with knowledge of workmen’s compensation is easily contactable in an emergency, and that forms are available at all times and your fees are up to date,” Jurgens adds.

Jurgens says: “For those driving fourwheeled vehicles, be aware that there are many more scooters on the road than a few years ago; therefore check your blind spots carefully, and keep the music low so you can hear the buzz of bikes. Be especially vigilant around dusk and into the evening, as this is when people come home from work and scooter drivers are at their busiest.”

he Gumtree World Rallycross of South Africa is an official, international and world championship event, and therefore special transport, traffic and parking arrangements will apply on race days – Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 November.

The organisers have devised a transport plan for getting to and from Killarney International Raceway to minimise traffic congestion, waiting and inconvenience.

Firstly, event tickets and parking tickets must be purchased online prior to the event through tickpetpros.co.za. Parking at the racetrack itself is severely limited.

Spectators are advised to: . Use public transport to the track – there is a MyCiTi bus station at the track in Potsdam Road. A fire in Killarney Gardens destroyed several factories in Monza Street on Wednesday night last week.

everal factory buildings in Killarney Gardens were nearly reduced to ruins recently following a huge fire outbreak.

A total of seven business premises at three different factories were affected by the fire on Wednesday last week – one of Michdar, three of Petcare and three of Ekamant South Africa (SA), says Theo Layne, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services.

Michdar is a manufacturer and supplier of airothene, while Ekamant SA is a manufacturer of sanding technology.

Layne says they are unable to determine where the fire originated and that the cause of the blaze has also not yet been established.

The fire was visible several kilometres away from the scene where it occurred, and sounds similar to that of explosions could be heard from afar. Smoke also billowed from the area, crossing into the nearby

Parklands and Table View areas.

When TygerBurger visited the scene, several fire engines and water tankers could be seen in front of the factories. The road leading into the industrial area, Monza Road, was also cordoned off due to the potential danger the fire posed.

A police officer at the scene said the fire started after 18:00. Layne confirmed this, saying that they responded to the emergency call at 18:57.

“An adult man, an occupant of one of the factories, sustained third-degree burns,” Layne says. This is the only recorded injury.

Layne says a total of six fire engines and four water tankers with 40 firefighters battled the blaze on the night. At one point the fire was out of control, but according to Layne the blaze was confined to the main affected buildings.

On Thursday three fire engines with 15 firefighters were still on the scene carrying out mopping-up operations, he says. “They remained on the scene throughout the day to ensure that no flare-ups occurred.”

Two in court for alleged human trafficking Two brothers from Brooklyn, Milnerton, appeared in court recently on charges of human trafficking and rape.

Hawks spokesperson, Captain Lloyd Ramovha, says the two brothers are 26 and 37 years of age respectively.

He says 26-year-old Yanick Agbor Ayuk was arrested on Wednesday last week while his older brother, Edward Tambe Ayuk, was arrested on 13 September.

Ramovha says the pair reportedly ran a prostitution ring and that they would recruit vulnerable women to work as sex workers at their house in Brooklyn.

He says a 16-year-old girl from Gugulethu allegedly ended up at the said address after

ports medicine experts from across South Africa gathered at Century City, Milnerton, recently for the 17th biennial congress of the South African Sports Medicine Association (Sasma).

The congress was held at the Century City Conference Centre from Tuesday 24 to Friday 27 October.

Speaking at the official opening of the congress, Western Cape minister of cultural affairs and sport, Anroux Marais, said the event is revered as the flagship academic and clinical meeting for professionals involved in sports medicine and exercise science in South Africa.

The theme for this year was “Integrate, Accelerate and Elevate”.

“This year’s theme has certainly sparked a sense of innovation, which is always exciting,” Marais said.

This year the congress focused on emphasising the importance of integration across various platforms in order to accelerate and improve outcomes and elevate sporting performance.

Marais said South Africa is fast becoming renowned as one of the most esteemed sporting nations in the world.

“We not only have our athletes competing on international stages to thank for this accolade, but also our dedicated medical personnel, who are always going the extra mile in ensuring our athletes perform at their ultimate best.

“It is then indeed paramount to have congresses inclusive of leaders in the field, sportspeople and implementers to engage on ways to allow all involved to flourish.

This congress will undoubtedly afford all delegates the opportunity to network, exchange ideas, share experiences and good practices, and also continue to develop impactful programmes, projects and partnerships to enable fruition in various spaces

Alleged housebreaker caught red handed Table View police managed to catch an alleged thief red handed as he was busy trying to break into a Parklands house recently, the police say.

According to the information, the perpetrator was caught on Tuesday 31 October while busy stealing property from the house in St John’s Road.

Table View police officers who were performing routine crime prevention patrol duties in the area on the evening noticed a bicycle next to the wall of the house and decided to investigate. Captain Frederick van Wyk, provincial police spokesperson, says the officers inspected the premises and observed an unknown man trying to force open a win-

dow with a garden tool. “ They jumped over the wall and got onto the roof of the house. The suspect managed to get access into the house and took a laptop and a knife. When the suspect became aware of the police officers’ presence, he jumped through the window. The officers went in search of the suspect, who was later discovered hiding in a dustbin not far from the crime scene,” says Van Wyk. The suspect was found in possession of the stolen property, which was identified by the homeowner. The 26-year-old suspect from Milnerton appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 2 November on charges of housebreaking and theft.

Gear up for Gumtree FIA champs ADRIAN PHEIFFER

W

hile the final round of the Gumtree International Automobile Federation (FIA) World Rallycross Championship at Killarney on Saturday and Sunday will be quite unlike any other major motorsport meeting ever staged in South Africa, it is going to be ideal for local petrolheads.

In addition to the grandstands that are close to the racing, there’s the raised banking on the west (or river) side of the complex that is being offered to spectators strictly as a BOG (bums on grass) facility at a special price. No vehicular traffic will be allowed in this area, from where the view of the racing, even at grass level, is also virtually unimpeded.

Saturday begins with practice sessions, followed by a variety of other events including an aerobatic display by the SAAF’s Silver Falcons.

Sunday starts with the final qualifying sessions. After that, the racing is split up into a series of snappy heats, semi-finals and finals – with limited entries in each of them – for MSA Rally cars, RX2 Rallycross cars and World RX Supercars. The RX2 category for 310 bhp, mid-engined, all-wheeldrive missiles was only launched this year.

Gaps between races will be filled with drifting and stunting, the Monster Riot Rig, pit walks for different groups of spectators, and displays by the spectacular Silver Falcons. Drivers include Johan Kristoffersson who has already clinched the 2017 world title in his VW Polo Supercar. Petter Solberg, a former world rally as well as double rally-

cross champion, is second in a similar VW Polo, but only a single point ahead of Audi S1 driver Mattias Ekstrom, who was the German Touring Car (DTM) titleholder for two seasons and the top rallycross scorer last year.

Then there’s former French gymnast Sebastien Loeb who has won an incredible nine FIA world rally titles, finished second in the Le Mans 24-hour race and second in the gruelling Dakar Rally, and set a new record for the American Pikes Peak hill climb, where cars ascend to an altitude more than four times higher than Table Mountain.

Parking inside will be limited. However there is parking in Potsdam Road, near the Blouberg Road T-junction. Blouberg Primary School in Blouberg Road offers another alternative, with the trip from there to Killarney in a MyCiTi bus available. A MyCiTi stop is conveniently located at the Killarney entrance. Or park your two-wheeler at the track for R50 for two days.

All event and parking tickets are valid for both days, but must be bought online before the event through ticketpros.co.za.

While food and drinks may not be brought in, there will be a number of vendors operating around the circuit. The clubhouse tuckshop will also be open. Other no-no’s include braai equipment, umbrellas and folding chairs. Cushions will be available.

A limited number of tickets are still available at R700 for a grandstand seat, or R400 for an unreserved ticket. Scholars under 16 will be admitted for R220, while there is no charge for a children under 12 accompanied by a paying adult.

Morné Swart (65*) het grootliks die aanvoorwerk gedoen in Durbanville (155/6) se sege met 40 lopies oor HS Bellville in die halfeindronde van die o.14-kompetisie. ’n Goeie spanpoging het Stellenberg (128/6 in die toegelate 25 boulbeurte) na ’n maklike oorwinning oor Milnerton (87) gevoer in die ander halfeindstryd.

In die Manuel’s Busdiens-uitklopkompetisie vir o.14-spanne sal Stellenberg en HS Durbanville mekaar die stryd aansê.
