BELLVILLE: REMAINS COVID-19 HOTSPOT

T
wo principals in Bellville have tested positive for the Covid-19 virus, reinforcing the area’s status as a hotspot for the virus. Shereen Gallie, principal of The Settlers High School, and Ronald Bantom, the principal of Kasselsvlei Comprehensive High School in Bellville South, have both contracted the Covid-19 virus. In a moving testimony which has been shared hundreds of times on Facebook, Bantom (57) tells how he tested positive along with his daughter Leronne and wife Susan. His son Sidney’s results came back negative. Bantom received his result on 21 May. “Almost 58 years old, a chronic diabetic, suffering from hypertension, my whole life turned around in a second,” he says. His GP had him admitted to hospital immediately. “I called my wife and children and told them that I will go and fight with everything I have, but ‘remember that based on my medical condition, I may not come back’.” He says it was the worst day of his life and he believed it was the end. Bantom was admitted to Kuils River Netcare’s ICU where he was told to forget the negative thoughts and media accounts. He survived the virus and left the hospital after 12 days. “I beat the odds, with my comorbidities, excellent care and positive attitudes of the medical staff.” He is still in isolation at home and hasn’t returned back to school. The provincial education department said they do not comment on individual cases, but stipulated they have strong protocols regarding the positive testing of any staff. The safety of staff, learners and teachers remains a top priority and no person who may still knowingly be infected can enter the school. At Settler’s High School the parents were told in a letter that the principal, Shereen Gallie, had been ill at home since 27 May. They were informed of her positive results on 1 June. In the letter, written by deputy principals Louisa Hall and Hugo Smuts, parents are told there is no need for panic. “All protocols stipulated by the National
Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) will now be followed and she is in our thoughts as we wish her a speedy recovery.” Gallie had no close contact with staff members and has followed safety guidelines as set out by the department. “She also exercised all the necessary precautions. She
wore a mask and visor at all times, exercised social distancing and stayed home once she was not feeling well.” The school assured parents and the public that the safety of their children and staff remains a priority. “Although the scientists tell us that the vi-
rus only remains ‘alive’ on surfaces for 24 hours and no one has been into her office since Wednesday last week, we used an external company to deep clean the offices, as well as the ladies’ cloakrooms as a precaution.” Teachers and other staff are also monitoring themselves closely.
