eer as ’n week nadat die berugte Boston-sentrum in Voortrekkerweg ontruim is, staan die deure steeds toe.

Sekerheidspersoneel staan nou wag buite die sentrum, wat tot onlangs deur honderde onwettige inwoners beset is.

Die laaste van die inwoners en hul meubels is verlede week deur ’n groot gesamentlike operasie deur polisielede, se-

kerheidspersoneel en die “Rooi Miere” (Red Ants) verwyder.

Dit kom nadat ’n uitsettingsbevel ’n paar weke gelede op die eienaars en inwoners van die 54 woonstelle bedien is.

Die gebou is al jare in die nuus oor sy algehele verval.

Water en elektrisiteit is verlede jaar afgesit en met TygerBurger se besoek vroeër vanjaar, was dit die algemene gebruik om riool en afval in sakkies uit die vensters te gooi.

ders tydens die uitsetting geskok.

Francois (Cassie) Carstens (50), ’n kwadrupleeg van Bellair, gaan vir die volle 42,2 km van die Kaapstad-marathon deur sy spanmaat, William Barrett (35), gestoot word. Dié twee samel geld vir die Durbanville-kinderhuis in.

Carstens, wat vir die grootste gedeelte van sy lewe in ’n rolstoel is, het nooit gedink hy sal aan ’n marathon deelneem nie.

Nog minder dat hy so opgewonde daaroor sou wees. ’n Paar dae voor die marathon sou afskop kon hy skaars ophou glimlag.

Carstens is 28 jaar gelede in ’n fratsongeluk tydens die grensoorlog in Angola verlam. Hy is steeds nie heeltemal seker wat daardie dag gebeur het nie, maar weet hy het die dood daardie dag en sedertdien ’n paar keer vrygespring.

“Hy is soos ’n kat met nege lewens,” skerts Barrett.

Hy het onder meer sy rug gebreek, ’n skedelfraktuur opgedoen en was vir etlike maande in die hospitaal. “Hulle het vir my ma-hulle gesê ek gaan in ’n inrigting hoort.

Potjiekoskompetisie gehou Die Bo-Oakdale-buurtwag hou op Maandag 25 September ’n potjiekoskompetisie om geld in te samel vir die buurt se oorhoofse kameras.

Die kompetisie word vanaf 09:30 op die hoek van Andries Pretorius- en Havengastraat aangebied. Die potjiemeesters moet al om 09:00 aanmeld.

Die kompetisie het ’n kinkel, want jou pot word geskenk om verkoop te word om geld in te samel.

Volgens Jessica McDillon, woordvoerder van die buurtwag, sal pryse vir die eerste drie wenners oorhandig word.

“Elkeen moet sy eie potjie, tafel, stoel, braaibak om vuur in te maak, en sy inhoud vir die potjie, gazebo of sambreel saambring. Jou braaibak moet ongeveer een meter van die grond wees om te voorkom dat die gras vlam vat. Geen inskrywingsgeld word gevra nie,” het sy gesê. ’n Mooi bord sal nodig wees om jou gereg aan die beoordelaars voor te sit. Hout sal voorsien word, maar deelnemers kan ook

“Die potjie moet van 09:30 af begin prut en klaar wees teen 13:45 vir die beoordeling wat om 14:00 begin. Jou potjie sal volgens smaak, geur en voorkoms beoordeel word.

“Terwyl die volwassenes agter die potjie hul ding doen, kan die kinders van hul oortollige energie op die springkasteel ontslae raak,” het McDillon gesê.

Die potjiekos sal vanaf 14:00 teen R30 per 500 ml verkoop word. Ander lekkernye om die hongerpyne te stil, sal ook tussendeur verkoop word en sluit in boereworsrolle en basaarpoeding.

Om ’n staanplek te bespreek kos R100 en die sperdatum is Vrydag 15 September.

Slegs 40 potjies sal toegelaat word vir die kompetisie. “Jy kan ook ander lekkernye van jou tafel verkoop, maar moet vooraf sê wat dit gaan wees om duplikasie te voorkom,” het sy gesê.

Winston du Plessis (left), a Grade 12 mechanical student from Bellville Technical High School, under the mentorship of his mechanical teacher, Ryno Human (right), achieved third place at the national Toyota Technical Education Programme School Skills Competition that took place during the week of 21 to 25 August in Johannesburg.

During this competition the competitors had to be able to work on mechanical motor engines to test their knowledge and skills regarding the mechanical working of these engines and also to measure their ability to solve mechanical problems. The competition had three divisions – the bodywork, spray paint and motor mechanics divisions. Winston achieved his third place in the motor mechanic divisions, the division on which the most focus and emphasis were placed.

Winston was rewarded with an apprenticeship at Toyota next year.

á nog ’n hoëprofielmisdaad in Oakdale, is veiligheid in die area opnuut onder die vergrootglas.

Vier rowers het Vrydagaand op die ontkleeklub, The Loose Goose Restaurant and Revue Bar, in Raglanstraat toegeslaan.

Die rowers was as polisiemanne vermom.

Dit kom minder as twee weke nadat ’n man net ’n klipgooi van daar in ’n mislukte kaping by M-Kem-apteek gewond is.

Anita May, ’n bestuurder by die Loose Goose, sê dit is die eerste keer in 11 jaar wat sy by die restaurant werk dat so iets met hulle gebeur.

Die Loose Goose het voorheen as Teazers bekend gestaan. May sê sy is omstreeks 03:15 in kennis gestel van die polisie wat by die klub is. Niemand het in daardie stadium iets vermoed nie. “Ek het gedog hulle is daar oor ’n dranklisensie.”

Die rowers is na haar kantoor waar hulle gesê het hulle dink daar word dwelms by die klub misbruik. “Ek het nog gelag en gesê nee, dit is ’n restaurant. En toe pluk hy ’n pistool uit.” Die rower het May beveel om die kluis oop te maak. “Hy’t gesê as ek dit nie oopmaak nie, gaan hy my doodskiet.”

Hy en die drie ander rowers is met ’n onbekende bedrag geld by die klub uit.

Klubpersoneel het eers daarna uitgevind die deurman is met ’n pistool oor die kop geslaan. Verder is almal ongedeërd, maar steeds geskok.

Tommy Milakovic, voorsitter van die Oakdale-buurtwag, sê daar is eintlik ’n afname in misdaad in die area, maar dat daar geïsoleerde voorvalle is wat baie aandag trek. “Daar is skielik meer hoëprofielmisdade – ’n tendens wat ons nie gewoonlik sien nie.” Milakovic sê hy weet nie of hierdie “die stilte voor die storm” is nie, omdat misdaad gewoonlik voor die feesseisoen vermeerder.

Dié pretloop, geborg deur Bunches for Africa en SJC Sekuriteit, vind op Saterdag 16 September op die Hoërskool Bellville se sportterrein plaas.

Daar is twee afstande waaraan belangstellendes kan deelneem – 5 km of 8 km. Die eerste 1 000 deelnemers oor die wenstreep ontvang elkeen ’n medalje. Dit kos R30 per inskrywing. Registrasie begin om 07:00.

Maar vir eers takel die 14-jarige Willem Grobler van Oakdale die bestes by ’n internasionale karate-byeenkoms in Bucharest in Romenië. “Ek het nog nie voorheen deelgeneem aan ’n wêreldkompetisie nie en sien baie daarna uit,” het Grobler voor sy vertrek na die Oos-Europese land vertel.

Dié leerder aan die Hoërskool Bellville is al van gr. R af by karate betrokke en neem al sedert 8-jarige ouderdom aan verskeie nasionale en Afrika-kampioenskapstoernooie deel. “Karate leer my selfdissipline, selfvertroue, deursettingsvermoë en spanwerk,” vertel hy.

Willem, wat by die Kinjite Karate Academy oefen, sê hy wil graag ’n swart gordel verwerf en eendag selfs Olimpiese Spele toe gaan.

Hy het tans ’n derde bruin gordel wat die hoogste vlak voor swart gordel is.

In September verlede jaar is Willem tydens ’n byeenkoms in Johannesburg vir die Suid-Afrikaanse span gekies, wat nou aan die vierde wêreldwye Goyu Ryu-kampioenskap deelneem.

Met hierdie prestasie het Grobler en sy gesin egter een van hul grootste karatestruikelblokke nóg teëgekom – die finansies om hom by die byeenkoms te kry.

Omdat hy nog minderjarig is, moet ’n meerderjarige hom na die kompetisie vergesel.

“Dit het nou die koste om deel te neem na R100 000 opgestoot,” vertel sy pa, Danie, op

Willem Grobler die webtuiste waar hulle geld probeer insamel.

Tot dusver het dit maar broekskeur met die insameling gegaan en teen druktyd is net R3 444 ingesamel.

Tygerberg’s got tons of talent T

he first round of auditions for the fifth annual ‘Tygerberg’s Talent 2017’ was held last Saturday at Middestad Mall in Bellville.

The talent show is part of the Tygerberg Heritage Festival and aims to showcase the talents of people living and working in Tygerberg and surrounding areas.

The second round of auditions is scheduled for Saturday 16 September from 10:00 to 14:00 at Par-

ow Centre.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the winner (R3000), runner up (R2000) and second runner up (R1000), while those placing fourth to twelfth will receive goodie bags.

Só gee Hoërskool D.F. Malan om

Die Hoërskool D.F. Malan se studenteraad vir 2018 is onlangs aangekondig. Die hoofleiers sal later vanjaar aangewys word. As deel van die graad 9-leerders aan die Hoërskool D.F. Malan se omgeeprojek, het die raad van leerders en klasleiers die bejaardes by die St. Johannis Heim-tehuis op Lentedag besoek.

Die graad 8’s van die Hoërskool D.F. Malan het as deel van hul graadprojek kinderboeke en balle bymekaar gemaak. Hulle het die 85 boeke en 20 balle op 4 September aan die Primêre Skool Blue Mountain buite Durbanville geskenk. Hier is Heinrich Leeuw en Tia Crous (agter) by van die leerders van die skool.

Die gesig van ’n alkoholis wat bly spook

Ek het vandeesweek in die gesig van alkoholisme gekyk. ’n Gesonde, hardwerkende, sogenaamd “ordentlike” man, maar vasgevang in die greep van drank.

Hier is dié geloof onder ouskoolmense dat jy nié ’n alkoholis is as jy nog ’n werk of vrou of huis het nie.

Min besef en verstaan dat jy kan funksioneer en steeds ’n positiewe rol in die samelewing vertolk terwyl jy hopeloos etanol-afhanklik is.

Só ook hierdie gerespekteerde man voor my, wat nie besef dat hy eintlik al klassifiseerbaar is nie.

Hoewel ek geen dokter is nie, is iemand wat élke dag van die week drink – hetsy ’n “slaapdop”, om “af te koel”, ’n sogenaamde “sundowner”, en, en, en ... – myns insiens al klaar so diep in die bottel dat omdraaikans maar gering is.

Die oomblik as jy ook nie meer nee dankie kan sê vir ’n glasie ietsie nie, het jy al klaar probleme, meen Lekedokter Ekke ook.

Daar is min “Ek wens ek kon soos jy wees en net lagplooitjies, nee dankie sê vir vertel hy en die hare is drank,” my.

Sy ma het agt kinders alleen grootgemaak op pap, en pap, en ... pap (sonder suiker, daarom drink hy vandag nog ses lepels suiker in sy koffie, want hy kán).

Hoe ánders sou sy lewe uitgedraai het as die dobbelsteentjie anders geval het? wonder ek. En wat is nou eintlik die verskil tussen sý swaarkry en enigiemand anders s’n?

“Ek wens ek kon ophou drink,” sug hy.

Dan skink hy vir hom nog ’n whisky.

Officers of the law­lessness On the morning of 30 August I was gobsmacked to see a black 4X4 police vehicle that had stopped in the road on the corner of Teddington and De Lange streets near the SARS office in Bellville. The policemen and women got out of the vehicle, stood on the road while chatting and then, with the exception of the driver, walked across the road.

Considering their tardiness there was definitely no emergency.

A fellow pedestrian related her interaction with another policeman who had parked his vehicle on a red line in the same area, inconveniencing other motorists.

Despite her being civil he resorted to calling her a ‘lazy housewife’ and then told her to ‘f@#% off’.

These officials again demonstrated that the law does not apply to them.

With their attitude and shameful behaviour I pray that my path never crosses theirs.

Waarom sny Stad nie gras in winter?

Tans is die gras van die parke en sypaadjies in ons omgewing weer baie lank.

Ek het die aangeleentheid na my wyksraadslid, Brendon van der Merwe, verwys.

Sy antwoord was dat die Stad Kaapstad nie gras in die wintermaande sny nie.

Dis volgens my ’n sinlose besluit, aangesien gras juis in die wintermaande vinnig groei wanneer dit nat is.

In die somermaande groei gras as gevolg van die droogte nie so vinnig nie en

behoort dit dan nie eintlik gesny te word nie. Ek het Van der Merwe hieroor gevra, maar ek het tot nou toe geen antwoord ontvang nie.

Die lang gras lyk vir my onooglik en ek vra dat die Stad Kaapstad spoedig iets hieraan doen.

Kudos to the City of Cape Town The City of Cape Town has again managed to raise the bar as it pertains to our financial performance.

The latest statistics for the 2016/17 financial year show that we achieved a capital spend of approximately 92.8% of our R6.4 billion capital budget – up from about 89% in the previous financial year and just over 80% in the 2013/14 financial year. In addition, the capital budget for the previous financial year was the largest that we’ve had over the past five years.

This achievement is as a result of highly skilled, passionate and dedicated members of staff and project managers. We have worked hard to overcome some project management challenges over the past year and it is paying off. The extra transparency that we’ve brought into our systems, and adjusting our processes to ensure that projects are strategically linked and tender ready prior to being included on the budget, have all contributed to better efficiency in the City. This is important as we are not simply driving expenditure percentages, but have key targets. A very small percentage of our capital projects have been delayed, largely due to community dynamics or violence in some areas.

Our financial performance

shows that our investment in and maintenance of infrastructure is solid, that our service delivery projects are on track, and that the money is being spent where it is needed. It demonstrates that we have the expertise and good governance structures to enable us to spend the money appropriately in the first place.

Beoordelaars se negatiwiteit skok Die Tygerberg-eisteddfod vier vanjaar sy 70ste bestaansjaar.

Vir dekades lank verskaf dit nie net vermaak op talle terreine nie, maar dit is ook ’n wonderlike platform vir talentvolle jongmense om hierdie talente uit te bou.

As ’n ouer van kinders wat reeds etlike jare met die eisteddfod te doen het, het twee kategorieë vanjaar erg teleurgestel – die tweespraak en gedramatiseerde prosa.

Nee, ek is nie teleurgesteld in die kinders se optredes nie – hulle het hul kant gebring.

Dit was twee spesifieke beoordelaars wat werklik belaglike punte gegee het.

Om net ná die Julie-skoolvakansie op te tree, behels dat hierdie kinders ure en ure in die vakansie moes oefen, en ouers, sowel as drama-afrigters, kosbare tyd moes opoffer om almal slaggereed te kry.

Sy het geen positiewe ding te sê gehad nie, net kritiek – en dit meestal oor plasing op die verhoog en dinge wat uitsluitlik in opdrag van ervare en gerespekteerde drama-afrigters uitgevoer is.

Die eisteddfod behoort beoordelaars met groot omsigtigheid te kies. Van hierdie kinders wil nooit weer in hierdie kategorieë deelneem nie. Dit is ’n groot jammerte, want in plaas daarvan dat hul drome vlerke gekry het, het ’n buitengewoon streng manlike en vroulike beoordelaar hul vlerke so te sê geknip.

En dis nie net ek wat so voel nie – die ouers was almal geskok en uiters teleurgesteld.

Ons praat hier van jong kinders wie se selfbeeld nog gevorm word. Asseblief, kies beoordelaars wat regverdig is en wat nie die kinders verneder en belaglike lae punte gee nie. Die eisteddfod se goeie naam is beslis hierdeur geknou.

Wie sal nou weer wil deelneem as jy nie net tyd en geld moet bestee nie, maar jy boonop jou swak punt aan die skool moet oordra en dan weet almal daarvan – maats, onderwysers en ouers. Dis mos dan veel beter om net nooit weer deel te neem nie!

The Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parow is organising a benefit concert in their auditorium on Sunday 17 September at 16:30. ygerberg-klub kon nie vir ’n beter begin gevra het nie toe hy Sondag in die eerste reeks wedstryde in die nasionale Goue Beker-rugbykompetisie vir Progress van Uitenhage met 54-27 geklop het.

Die Westelike Provinsie het twee verteenwoordigers in hierdie kompetisie vir die voorste nie-universitêre klubspanne in die land.

Valsbaai het Saterdag ewe goed afgeskop in sy eerste kragmeting deur Roses United van Wellington, die topspan in die Boland, met 43-19 te klop.

Tygerberg se wedstryd op Floridapark teen die voorste span van die Oostelike Provinsie het lewendige hardloopspel gelewer en altesame 11 drieë is gedruk, waarvan 6 deur die tuisspan wie se stelskopwerk ook goed in die kol was.

Tygerberg speel die komende naweek in sy tweede wedstryd in George teen (ook genaamd) Progress, die topspan van die Suidwestelike Distrikte.

Wat die WP se Presidentbeker-klubkompetisie betref, wil dit lyk of die 14 Tygerbergse spanne in die Superliga hierdie seisoen weinig trofeë in die verskillende kompetisies en afdelings beskore sal wees. Terwyl die Maties en Hamiltons sake in die eindstryd vir die spanne in die Superliga sal uitspook, is Unie-Milnerton die enigste oorblywende span in die A-afdeling se troosgroep wat nog ’n kans op ’n trofee het. Unimil het die afgelope naweek vir Brackenfell met 25-20 uitgeskakel en kom nou in die eindstryd teen die Victoriane te staan.

In die B-afdeling van die Superliga het al die Tygerbergse spanne ná die afgelope naweek se uitklopwedstryde reeds die trekpas gekry.

Kraaifontein is op verrassende wyse met 34-35 deur Daljosafat se Young Peoples getroef, terwyl Kraaifontein se buurklub, Hands & Heart, moedig gespook het teen die gunsteling, Rangers, maar hy moes met 31-45 die stryd gewonne gee. In afdeling C is Scottsdene darem nog in die wedloop nadat hy All Saints met 51-12 laat les opsê het.

Goodwood­rugbyklub op soek na eerstespan­afrigters

Fairmont se sewes puik

Die Goodwood-rugbyklub benodig die dienste van ’n hoofafrigter en hulpafrigter vir die klub se eerste span vir volgende seisoen.

Die klub speel die komende seisoen in die WPRVU-Superliga se C-afdeling.

Die fokus sal, met die hulp van die nuwe afrigters, wees om in 2019 op te skuif na die Superliga se B-afdeling. Die klub beskik oor drie senior spanne en een o.20-span. Afrigters wat vir die poste aansoek wil doen, moet aan die volgende vereistes voldoen.

Fairmont se o.19-rugbyspan het kleingeld gemaak van sy teenstanders in ’n sewemantoernooi wat dié skool verlede week aangebied het.

Fairmont het in die eindstryd vir Melkbosstrand deurmekaar gehardloop en met 47-0 geklop. Maar Melkbosstrand se o.16span het dubbel en dwars vir sy senior span se nederlaag vergoed deur Parklands in die eindstryd van die o.16-afdeling met 45-0 te looi. – (Sarel Burger)
