ellville pedestrians are one small step closer to what the City hopes will be a safer environment. The second round of public comment for the upgrade to Kruskal Avenue closed yesterday. TygerBurger reported in March how the City plans to spend R13 million on the project, which will see sections of Kruskal Avenue, Teddington Road, Voortrekker
Road and Lower Blanckenberg Street being upgraded. “These roads form the main pedestrian route linking Voortrekker Road with Bellville Station and the Bellville Public Transport Interchange (BPTI),” Sonette Smit of the City’s Urban Integration Department says. Phase 1 of the project is set to start on 18 July and tenders for this project will be advertised next month. No informal traders will be moved, despite rumours doing the rounds, Smit says. In Teddington Road (up to the South Afri-

stalling public art, additional lighting and new benches, and planting more appropriate trees. Completion of Phase 1 of the project is expected by June 2019. Smit, along with other role players from the City, met with pedestrians in Kruskal Avenue where the designs were on public display last Wednesday. Warren Hewitt, head of the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP), called the upgrade “well overdue.” “The density (in this area) is immense, with around 1000 feet per hour passing through.” V To page 2.
