P

roperty related crime in Brackenfell is expected to decrease even more this year as neighbourhood watches, and private security companies strengthen their partnership with police.

Statistics has shown that crimes such as theft of, and out of motor vehicles, busi-

ness and house burglaries, had already started taken a downward trend between 2018 and 2019, with a 19% decrease.

These numbers were confirmed by Brackenfell police commander Col Jakobus Marthinus at the annual meeting of the Brackenfell Community Police Forum (CPF) last Monday night, (3 February).

“In this day and age there is absolutely no possibility that the police can address crime

on our own. To curb the tide we have to have a strong partnership and good relationship with our communities,” he told role-players.

There was also a 12% decrease in reported cases of arson and malicious damage to property. In addition, theft, commercial crime and shoplifting had decreased by 23%.

While house and business robberies decreased by about 28%, there was an increase in car jackings, where Uber drivers were tar-

geted. According to Marthinus, this has become a crime trend in the northern suburbs.

Furthermore, arrests for drug related crimes and drinking and driving has increased.

Marthinus said community safety structures play a vital role in combatting crime.

In Brackenfell, police partner with 13 neighbourhood watches and several private security firms.

he current firearm amnesty period is two months underway and residents still have until 31 May to hand in any unwanted or illegal firearms and ammunition they wish to surrender at their nearest police station for destruction.

After this period, minister of police, Bheki Cele, in January warned that persons found in possession of unlicensed firearms will face the full might of the law.

Unwanted firearms Unwanted firearms consist of any weapons, part of a weapon or ammunition that are unsafe or are lawfully in someone’s possession, who no longer needs or requires the weapon.

“That would also include weapons,

Illegal firearm An illegal firearm is any firearm, part of a firearm or ammunition, which is not licensed and possessed in accordance with the Firearms Control Act. This includes a firearm, part of a firearm or ammunition, that is not registered to the current owner, does not have a serial number or has a defaced or removed serial number.

“If a firearm, (unwanted or illegal) is handed in during this time for the purpose of destruction there will be no compensation,” she says.

Illegal or unwanted firearms may not be sold.

Transfer of weapon not allowed Crous explains that you can’t hand in any firearm in terms of the amnesty period for someone else to apply for a license for that same firearm.

“If, however, your license has expired, you can hand it in during the amnesty period and then apply for a new license, without being prosecuted.”

The weapon will be kept safe by police until such time as the new license is granted. Crous suggests that gunowners contact the firearm officer at their local police station, who will provide them with more information and assistance and the relevant forms.

DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke After being trapped in a narrow well point, 14m underground for hours, a brave little pup was saved by a Kraaifontein fire and rescue team in a nail-biting rescue operation on Saturday evening.

The puppy, Emma, an eight-week-old crossbreed, survived the nightmare experience unscathed, while her team of rescuers were hailed for their unwavering will to save a little dog from certain death.

Staff at Bellas Guardian Angels Animal Rescue centre in Joostenbergvlakte suspect that Emma fell into the well anytime between 14:00 and 16:00, as they realised she was gone when they did a count at supper time around 17:00.

“It was at this time that we noticed Emma’s dog mom, standing at the opening of the well howling. She ran up to us and back to the pit again to get our attention, and when we reached the well we heard Emma crying from underneath,” says Nicola Kruger from Bellas.

A rescue crew was dispatched from Kraaifontein fire station and arrived on the scene at 17:18, where conditions were assessed.

Rescuers could hear the puppy’s weak whimpering coming from deep below and knew they had to act swiftly.

A rescue plan was devised and specialised rescue equipment called for.

“Roeland Street fire crew arrived on the scene shortly after with the necessary equipment,” says a spokesperson at the City’s fire and rescue department.

It was vital to locate Emma, so an LCD camera was lowered down into the well.

Minutes later, amid a collective sigh of relief, a mud- covered little Emma popped up on the abo-

ve-ground camera screen.

“Rescuers then had to devise a makeshift rescue loop from wire and plastic to attach to the end of a rope that would pull her out of the well,” explains platoon commander, Ursula Wright.

After what felt like an eternity the loop was successfully guided around her body and she was slowly rolled up.

“Without the camera to guide us, this rescue would not have been possible,” says Ursula.

Another nerve-wrecking minute passed with crew and spectators alike holding their breaths, hoping the loop would hold her.

Then, at 19:44, little Emma, eyes closed and not making a sound, emerged from the darkness amidst a loud cheer.

Apart from sand in her ears, eyes burning and some shock, she had sustained no serious injuries and two hours after her harrowing experience, Emma was again running around playing. “She is just fine now and shows no signs of stress. All of us at Bellas are elated and there are no words to thank the rescue crew for the compassion they showed towards our little puppy,” says Nicola. By Monday, word about Emma had spread, and Bellas had received an adoption application for her.

“If all goes well she will soon be at her forever home,” says a grateful Nicola.

School bullying addressed DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

B

ullying can have lifelong adverse effects on a victim, reason enough to stop this evil in its tracks where it starts: at school.

For several years Brackenfell police have been presenting a bully programme at local schools to address the topic of violence in schools.

“Bullying is a problem in all schools and although schools in the Western Cape must adhere to uniform policies, our programme aims to create awareness among learners,” says Crous.

It is important to distinguish between bullying and peer conflict.

Bullying constitutes an imbalance of power.

“A bully will always focus on someone

perceived to be weaker than him or herself.

This is where it differs from normal peer conflict, where equal power is present. To bully is to seek power or control, a fact most children do not perceive.”

She adds that bullying is a repeated action, whereas peer conflict is once-off incidents.

Crous says bullying comes in many forms.

“You can bully someone by continuously mocking them about something. You can bully someone by making inappropriate sexual comments or even spreading rumours. Telling other people to not be friends with someone is also a form of bullying.”

In like manner there is a difference between teasing and taunting.

“You can tease someone in good humour, but the moment your intention becomes to hurt their feelings, teasing turns into taunt-

CPFs get the green light On Thursday, the provincial minister of community safety, Albert Fritz, met with the provincial commissioner of police Lt Gen Yolisa Matakata, and the chair of the provincial CPF board, Francina Lucas, to discuss the continuation of the community policing forum (CPF) electoral annual meetings.

It was agreed that the provincial commissioner would withdraw the moratorium currently placed on the CPF electoral meetings.

“The lifting of the moratorium and the continuation of the CPF electoral meetings are subject to the elections being officiated by both a representative from the community safety department and the police station commander. Those meetings which take

place without the station commander and a department representative will be invalid, impacting on the CPFs’ eligibility to receive funding from the department,” Fritz said in a statement.

“I am pleased with the outcome of the meeting and note that my department has adhered to protocol by writing to the provincial commissioner to request that the moratorium be lifted. In turn, the provincial commissioner has agreed that she will issue formal correspondence communicating that the moratorium has indeed been lifted. This will pave the way for CPFs to conclude their annual meetings by 31 March 2020,” he added.

“It is essential that AGMs be conducted in a spirit of inclusivity.”

Crous says a great concern to police is the extent of cyber bullying among the youth.

“This trend has reached worrisome levels and we receive many phone calls from schools and parents requesting advise.

Young people doing this is not aware of what they expose themselves to and make themselves guilty of.”

After identifying what bullying is the programme goes on to guide learners on how to overcome it.

“Learners have to realise that the only way to stop bullies is by speaking out as a collective. If you are a target of a bully or know about someone who is, you must speak out. It must be reported to a teacher at school. Don’t stand around in the circle and take a video of the violence; rather report it. By staying silent you become part of the problem,” says Crous.

Creating hope for seniors ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme

he long days of the elderly in the Onze Molen frail care centre were cheered up recently with a special pamper morning.

This was made possible by Creative Hope, which took hands with Absolute Beauty in Brackenfell to pamper the elderly.

The morning was held on Monday 27 January.

“Sonja Vos and her amazing team from Absolute Beauty treated our elderly to a special morning of pampering . . . their hands, feet, as well as head massages and even a blowdry,” says Penny Jansen van Vuuren, founder of Creative Hope.

“The expressions of enjoyment and gratitude on their faces were priceless. Here at Creative Hope we are driven by one single goal, to create hope for our elderly in frail care,” she says.

“We do weekly art projects in the frail care units of retirement villages. Each session is an hour in a group with a maximum of 12 seniors.

“So many elderly lives have been touched and reached and it’s a privilege to be part of something so vital and effective – being the face of love and investing in a hopeful future for our elderly in frail care,” Jansen van Vuuren says.

“We would love to take hands with individuals, schools and businesses, so that we

can spread the seed of love and provide a new sense of hope for those in need,” she says.

Creative Hope is a non-profitable organisation based in Durbanville. The need for artistic stimulation became evident when Jansen van Vuuren became aware of how the frail seniors needed a creative outlet to give them something to look forward to.

She started by visiting the old age homes, and her passion for the seniors grew as she started arts and crafts sessions with them, according to its web page.

The main focus at present is the seniors in the frail care centres with dementia, Alzheimers, Parkinson’s disease, strokes and other illnesses where the elderly require 24 hour nursing care – elderly people who need nursing assistance for dressing, washing, ablutions as well as assistance with taking their medicine and often feeding.

“We do art and activity sessions with the elderly in frail care. It started out as volunteer work, but developed into something very special and much needed,” she says.

Jansen van Vuuren started in August 2017 with two old age homes and currently visits 12 different old age homes in Durbanville, Bellville and Panorama doing 12 sessions a week with 100 to 120 seniors.

Creative Hope provides the art and crafts needed and each project is tried and tested beforehand to make sure that all seniors with specific hand limitations can participate.

“The idea behind this project is to give the seniors an opportunity to discover a creative side inside themselves or to be part of a group making creative arts in their own time – to have something to look forward to and talk about,” she says.

“The change these sessions bring about is indescribable. Studies show art therapy stimulates the senses and enhance communication, brain function and social interaction. Participating in and enjoying artistic endeavours – even when seniors are not necessarily creatively inclined – can have a positive impact on health by creating a sense of purpose and keeping the mind busy. Also when seniors are able to share their handmade gifts with friends and family, they develop a sense of pride in what they have created. There is such a huge need for this type of service,” she says.

Speke sing 20ste keer vir downsindroom NIELEN DE KLERK @nielendk

wintig jaar, twintig fietstoere en duisende kilometers.

Dit is weer tyd vir die Downsindroom-vereniging van die WesKaap (DSAWC) se jaarlikse fietstoer George toe.

Vanjaar wil die span probeer om R65 000 in te samel en daardeur hul vorige rekord verbeter.

Die fietstoer het in 2000 begin toe lede van die Mountain View-fietsryklub besluit het om op ’n unieke manier geld vir ’n organisasie in te samel, vertel Jones Strydom, een van die stigters van die toer.

Die klub bestaan uit werknemers van die Goodwood-gevangenisdienste, wat onder meer in Goodwood en in Bellville gestasioneer is.

Tot in daardie stadium het hulle ten bate van die Paarlskool in Brackenfell fietsgery, maar die skool het destyds weens logistieke redes voorgestel hulle pak eerder die fietstoer

namens ’n ander organisasie aan.

Toe die speke eers vir die DSAWC begin sing, was dit amper asof dit liefde met die eerste trapslag was.

Vanjaar gaan altesaam 11 fietsryers die 473 km-roete aandurf en via Bredasdorp en Mosselbaai na George ry.

Hulle spring op 24 Februarie weg en sal na verwagting op 28 Februarie by hul bestemming aankom.

Tussen-in gaan hulle op verskillende dorpe stop, waar hulle by skole gaan aanklop en bewustheid oor downsindroom kweek.

Die onderskeie skole hou dikwels hul eie insamelingsprojekte en skenk dan die geld aan die fietsryers om vir die DSAWC te gee.

Jodi Hendriks, ’n downsindroomlyer, begelei hulle saam met enkele ander DSAWC-personeel. Hendriks, ’n groot Kurt Darren-liefhebber, lewer gewoonlik ’n klein vertoning.

Vanjaar is die eerste keer dat twee fietsryers van die onderneming Freightmore saam gaan trap. Hulle is nie juis bekommerd oor hierdie uitdaging nie, vertel Brent Buckley van Freightmore.

“Dit is ’n voorreg en ’n eer (om hieraan deel te neem).”

Tineke Ganz-Malan, bestuurder van die Downsindroom-vereniging in die Wes-Kaap, sê dit is ’n voorreg om weer eens by die fietstoer betrokke te wees.

Sy sê die geld wat ingesamel word, is ’n bysaak.

“Dit is belangrik, maar nie al wat ons probeer doen op hierdie toer nie.”

Vir hulle gaan dit eerder oor bewusmaking en om te wys “mense met downsindroom is maar net soos ons”.

Buiten geld, benodig die DSAWC skenkings van onder meer kruideniersware, sjokolade, skyfies, sonskerm, neute, kitshawermout, sap, lekkergoed en petrol.

No bail for two suspects DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke Two men involved in a house robbery in Brackenfell remain in custody after police opposed bail last week.

The two men, 24 and 25, from Delft are due to appear in court again this week. At about 10:25 on 30 January, the men entered the house from the back armed with a firearm and a knife. The homeowner and domestic worker was in the house at the time of the robbery. “The suspects threatened them with a firearm and demanded money. They tied up the two women and started searching the house. They loaded the property into the women’s vehicle, a silver-grey Honda Jazz,” says police spokesperson Capt Erica Crous.

They fled the scene in her car with a flat screen television, jewellery, liquor, a cellphone and cash. The stolen vehicle was spotted by officers of the K9 unit and flying squad in Hindle Road. The vehicle was pulled over and the suspects were arrested. The men were detained and appeared in Blue Downs magistrate’s court on 3 February.

“Crimes of this nature are totally unacceptable in any community.

Thorough investigation and a detailed docket are important to strengthen the hand of the court to ensure a successful prosecution,” says Col Jakobus Marthinus, station commander of Brackenfell police.

Police aims to keep youth safe DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke Ongoing awareness drives at local schools by police are a powerful tool of crime prevention among the youth.

An array of issues ranging from basic safety to child pornography and sexual offences form the focal point of these awareness drives.

Primary school learners between grades one to four are first on the radar with annual puppet shows, themed “My body is my own”, written and presented to teach the child the basics of personal safety.

“The concept of ‘stranger danger’ and the right to have control over, and respect for

your own body, are explained to the children in a fun and interactive way. The little ones get so involved and by the end of the show have no qualms about asking questions,” explains Brackenfell police spokesperson Capt Erica Crous.

“We teach them not to get into cars or take food or sweets from strangers, not to stray away alone and why it is their choice to say no to unsolicited hugs and kisses from people, even if it is family.”

In local high schools the ins and outs of sexual offences are discussed with teenagers.

“We focus not only on the legalities of sexual offences, but also the physical, emotional and health repercussions of sex, consensual

and non-consensual.”

Police encourage teenagers to make informed decisions.

“Sexually transmitted diseases and teenage pregnancy have detrimental effects on a teenager’s life. And so can the anxiety and sometimes anger linked to the ending of a sexual relationship, or the feeling of being trapped in a sexual relationship. We try to impart this crucial message to the youth: that every person has the power of choice.

We also create a platform for teenagers to ask the important questions,” says Crous.

Equally important, teenagers are also educated about the criminal aspects of rape and child pornography.

According to Crous, the legal definition of

rape is any kind of sexual penetration without consent.

Child pornography constitutes the manufacturing (recording the material) and distribution (sending) of any naked pictures or videos of underaged persons.

“Teenagers when taking and sending out naked pictures or videos of themselves or others do not realise the legal ramifications of doing so. After sending the material, there is no way of ever tracking it again or knowing where it might land. Once it is out there anyone can use and distribute it. It is a vicious cycle and has become a big problem in our high schools,” says Crous.

In addition to this programme, police conduct regular drug searches at high schools.

Let the spirit of love favour you F

ew know that there were many early Christian martyrs called Valentine.

The most famous of them during the time of Roman emperor Claudius II, was executed for conducting weddings for soldiers who were not allowed to marry, and also because he happened to minister to Christians in Rome, which was a Pagan religious city at the time.

Before his execution on 14 February in AD 496, Saint Valentine performed a miracle by restoring the sight of his jailer’s blind daughter, Julia, and then endearingly wrote a farewell letter to her signed: “Your Valentine”.

In order to remind the soldiers who converted to Christianity and God’s love, Saint Valentine gave them hearts, which he apparently cut from parchment, and so that’s why the heart has featured ever since. But what has the love we associate

today with Valentine’s Day, got to do with it all?

Firstly, Saint Valentine wore a purple

amethyst finger ring with the image of Cupid carved on it (Cupid being the god of love, or in ancient Greece, Eros). Secondly the amethyst became the birthstone of February – a stone which attracts love.

And so this Valentine’s weekend, be sure to wear some piece of apparel in the colour of the amethyst, and maybe add an emblem of a red heart to it, to show your love for your spouse, current lover, or one you still hope to meet.

Treat your loved one to a pink prawn picnic While many happy couples will be exploring restaurants and other romantic spots to mark Valentine’s Day, there are some who prefer to avoid the bustle and do something special at home.

Keshan Rambarun, executive chef at The Table Bay, shares an easy to follow Braai’d Lemongrass Tiger Prawns recipe with dipping sauces that oozes romance.

“This is a recipe I have prepared many times and it never gets old. Go out to your garden or venture to the beach or a quiet picnic spot. Do most of the preparation at home. The prawns can be pre-marinated and dipping sauces prepared beforehand.

Garlic bread and salad are optional, but a glass of good wine or champagne is a must,” he says.

Recipe | Braai’d Lemongrass Tiger Prawns You will need 1kg Tiger prawns, deveined and butterflied.

For the marinade . 6 Lemon grass spears . Lemon olive oil . 2 garlic cloves . 30ml siracha sauce . 20g fresh coriander

Mix the ingredients together and pre-marinate the prawns.

Grill prawns over hot coals until the shells turn pink.

For each of the following dipping sauces, simply mix the ingredients together and serve with the prawns.

Chili Kalmansi dipping sauce . 50ml sweet chili sauce . 20g coriander . Juice of 1 lim Garlic Butter Sauce . 50ml cream . 20g butter . 5g garlic . 1 sprig of thyme

Petrolprys pla ons nie juis in Suid-Afrika Die petrolprys pla Suid-Afrikaners nie juis nie. En die regering weet dit.

Ons kan darem nog petrol kry, enige tyd van die dag of nag, in enige volume en byna op enige plek.

Dieselfde kan ongelukkig nie van elektrisiteit gesê word nie.

In Suid-Afrika is ons om verskeie redes aan ons voertuie verknog. Dis enersyds ’n statussimbool en andersyds ’n noodsaaklikheid. Maar as iemand in ’n fô-baai-fô voor jou by die pompe staan en sy twee tenks volmaak, sien jy dit draai sommer maklik by R2 000 op ’n slag.

Selfs al maak die regering oornag die petrolprys R30 per liter, sal ons waarskynlik steeds, en net soveel, met ons motors ry. Dit weet die regering ook, so hy laai die petrolprys na hartelus met allerhande belastings, en Jan Publiek betaal maar.

Dit was nog altyd die staat se ou melkkoei. En sy is net nóóit droog nie.

Mense sou lankal en masse met motorfietse en 125cc-scooters gery het as die petrolprys hulle gepla het. In die Ooste, in lande soos Viëtnam, China en Japan, is dit die norm. Ma, pa, twee kinders en die hond ry op ’n scooter.

Daar is tonnels, brûe, bane en parkeergarages by die mall nét vir scooters. Motors is uitsonderlik, want daar is nie plek nie.

Maar al ry mense daar vier op ’n motorfiets, swem hulle nie in die see nie, “because its dangerous”.

Ek wil nou nie ’n donderpadda wees nie, maar nou die dag staan ek by Checkers en ’n tante kom in een van daai fô-baai-fô’s aangery.

Sy kry ’n parkeerplek, maar dis baie nou. Hoe nou gemaak? Vorentoe en agtertoe, vorentoe en agtertoe en weer vorentoe, so ja. En agter haar dam die verkeer op. Nou wag ons maar.

En dis toe ek voel ek moet iets sê. Toe sy uitklim, sê ek “mevrou, sê bietjie vir jou man hy moet vir jou ’n klein karretjie koop”. “Ja,” seg sy, “ek hét al vir hom gesê”.

Nou watter man wil dan sy vrou met ’n fô-baai-fô straf? Of moet sy daarmee ry net vir die curb hopping wanneer sy Saterdae vir Jangotliebantonius by die skolesport gaan aflaai? Daar is mos gewoonlik nie parkeerplek nie, behalwe op die sypaadjie.

Of dalk wíl mevrou met ’n V8-Humvee in die dorp ry, want ewe skielik is sy baie groter as al die ander voertuie en kan sy lekker op hulle afkyk – en op hulle neersien. En die petrol? Ag nee wat, manlief se platinum-kredietkaart betaal mos, geen probleem dáár nie.

Daardie selfde tante kon op dieselfde plekke kom met ’n klein stadsmotor wat ’n kwart van die petrol van ’n Hummer gebruik. Dis eintlik kotsmislik, dié conspicuous consumption, want dis presies wat dit is. Dit skreeu dit eintlik uit: Kyk hoeveel kan ék tog mors!

Miskien kan iemand in my tweede lewe vir my verduidelik wat die rasionaal daaragter is om met ’n reusevoertuig, wat vir die berge en modder bedoel is, op teerstrate te ry. Of dalk is dit ’n omen van wat op ons wag: strate vol gate dat dit soos die Grand Canyon lyk?

In daai geval sou ek nie eens ’n Hummer wou hê nie, ook nie ’n Land Rover-, Mahindra- of Haval-4 x 4 óf ’n scooter nie, nee wat. Dán wil ek een van daai nuwe drones met ’n tweesitplek-kajuit en aircon hê. Hy sit nie in verkeer vas nie, slurp nie petrol of diesel op nie en is boonop veiliger.

Do away with these plastics With the Western world intent on reducing single-use plastics, it is noticeable that fresh milk is still sold here mainly in plastic bottles and bags.

I recycle way more milk bottles than any other plastic, which shows how prevalent they are.

Surely other containers such as Tetra pak cartons and glass should be encouraged. Even aluminium cans can be tried as they are doing in the wine industry, and they are not more expensive per millilitre than a bottle.

Millennials expect big businesses to be more environmentally conscious and therefore some packaging may initially be more expensive, but the law of averages will apply and the costs will come down.

Logically the focus should be on preserving the environment, not maximising profit.

Single-use plastic containers should be priced much higher than the alternatives, thereby reducing the demand and ultimately phasing them out.

Ek moes onlangs die Louis Leipoldt-hospitaal besoek.

Dit was ’n absolute nagmerrie om parkering te kry en ek het letterlik 30 minute lank op en af gery in elke straat rondom die hospitaal.

Ek kan verstaan dat sekere motoriste uit desperaatheid later parkeer waar hulle ook al ’n gaatjie kry.

Wat ek wel kon sien, is dat niemand iemand vas parkeer

het nie of ’n onderneming se parkering “gesteel” het nie.

Wat my egter so vies maak, is dat daar wragtig ’n verkeerskonstabel rondloop en kaartjies uitskryf vir elke motor wat nie in ’n parkeerplek geparkeer is nie.

Ek is ’n wetsgehoorsame burger, maar ek sou regtig anderpad kyk in hierdie situasie.

Die mense kom hospitaal toe om ’n goeie rede. En hier is geen parkering nie.

Ek hoop hy is trots op die feit dat hy dalk ’n kaartjie vir iemand uitgeskryf het wat iemand daardie dag aan die dood afgestaan het.

Alle voorspoed word Nielen toegewens. Ek hoop sy word eendag redakteur van ’n topgehalte musiektydskrif – iets wat nog altyd heeltemal afwesig in die Suid-Afrikaanse publikasiemark was en is.

These bikers should be reported Most people complain about the lawlessness of the minibus taxi drivers, but the motorcyclists are worse.

They blatantly disobey the rules of the road by speeding and threading their way between cars and ignoring the noise pollution legislation as the standard exhaust systems (that the motorcycle manufacturers spend millions on getting as quiet and efficient as possible) are replaced by noisy systems. What they do not take into consideration is that they have full-face helmets on and the exhaust outlet is behind them, so the noise that they hear is behind them. Not so for the people around them who have to put up with the irritating noise.

I reside in Sonkring and we have to put up with a number of these irresponsible people racing during the night starting from 23:00 to sometimes 04:00 in the morning.

Naturally, no traffic officers are visible to stop this practice, or check the decibel levels of the exhausts, although they have speed cameras on these roads.

Please report them to the authorities if you see them speeding. All motorcyclists should carry an organ donor card as they will become one sooner or later if they drive in the manner that they do.

‘Hobo’ has a suggestion I agree with C Liebenberg that handing out money at traffic lights isn’t solving the beggar’s problem. About 70% of them end up as substance abusers because they aren’t interested in uplifting themselves.

The other 30%, like myself, get to uplift ourselves and get temporary help at shelters only for six months. We are not seen as someone that really needs urgent help and support from their social workers or groups. We are not seen as substance abuse addicts, only as “homeless” with or without a job.

I “fell down” after a divorce at 52-years-old and found it difficult to find a place to stay as it’s extremely expensive.

For instance, to move into a place of R2 500 per month works out R7 500 (R2 500 times three is R7 500).

Can’t big companies, organisations, shopping groups etcetera “invest” in hostels as property investments?

A big building with 20 rooms, each room with four double bunk beds and a locker per bed gives you an income of R120 000 (R1 500 per bed). Ablutions and showers etcetera can be shared.

Couples should be ‘in tune’ when selling T

he fact that South Africa recognises so many kinds of marriage is a tribute to an inclusive Constitution, but it can create some confusion when it comes to property sales.

Gerhard Kotzé, managing director of the RealNet estate agency group says a couple married in community of property must both sign all the relevant documents – especially the offer to purchase – to ensure a valid sale.

“However, one spouse does not need the consent of the other to award a mandate to an estate agent, even if the property forms part of a joint estate. What is more, the other spouse cannot then award a similar mandate to another agent or contest the rate of sales commission agreed to in the original

mandate,” he says.

Kotzé says this is just another twist in the complex legal framework that governs the sale and purchase of residential property in South Africa – and that makes it imperative for home buyers and sellers to deal only with qualified and experienced estate agents.

“In South Africa we respect marriages concluded in terms of civil or customary laws and in terms of many specific cultures and religions, but no matter what type of ceremony took place, the majority are in fact governed by the Matrimonial Property Act when it comes to the couple’s assets.”

Kotzé says this legislation provides that couples who have not signed an antenuptial contract are by default married in community of property, a system in which both spous-

es have an equal share in any property, belongings and liabilities that they bring into the marriage or acquire during the marriage.

“Couples married in this way also have equal power to administer and dispose of their assets and can act independently of each other – except when it comes to the sale of fixed property and the signing of suretyships and credit agreements.

“And working with an agent who does not understand that both husband and wife married in community of property must sign all documents relating to the sale could lead to significant financial loss,” he explains.

If a deal falls through because the second spouse actually refuses to sign the sale agreement, Kotzé notes that the buyer could

lose out on interest that could have been earned on a deposit or on the purchase of another suitable property where the sellers were not at odds.

“Or even if there is just a delay while the second signature is sought, it might mean that the buyer incurs extra holding costs on his own property or has to pay more rent instead of starting to pay off his new home loan.

“A professional agent will however be aware of the potential pitfalls, especially in situations where there seems to be any disagreement between a couple about selling their property, and is unlikely to have accepted a mandate signed by only one spouse married in community of property in the first place.”

The route starts in front of City Hall in Darling Street, right in front of the balcony where the late President Nelson Mandela made his first speech after his release from Victor Verster Prison.

Record-breaking day to remember EARL HAUPT @earlhaupt For the 51 945 people who made their way to Cape Town Stadium on Friday 7 February for the Match In Africa, it was a day which will not be easily forgotten.

The figure, a new world record attendance for a single tennis match, also helped contribute to the $3.5 million donated to the Roger Federer Foundation, which will be used to support education in rural South Africa.

The tennis match between 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer and his great rival, 19-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal, almost took a back seat, which saw the duo on a whirlwind tour of the City, starting with Federer’s arrival in Cape Town on Wednesday 5 February, and included an impromptu warm-up session between the two on the Grand Parade.

“I don’t remember playing here in Cape Town 20 years ago, because I was on vacation and you rest your body. When I was little, I was playing in Joburg and other places where I was travelling. I remember I got a racquet from my parents here when I was little. After all this time it has gotten to this and to play in a stadium like this it is beautiful and my mom is very happy right now.”

Federer would go on to team up with Bill Gates in a celebrity doubles match against Nadal and his partner, Trevor Noah, which was won 6-3 by Federer and Gates, who dubbed themselves “Gateserer”.

The result was of little consequence as the four kept the crowd entertained with witty quips as they had themselves mic’d up for the crowd and audience at home to listen in on.

Tickets to the event were sold out within 10 minutes and Federer said he’s open to collaborating for future charitable efforts.

and to see where the synergies are and how we can do things together. At the end of the day, we are all seeking the impact, not for personal glory or legacy. We are here to leave a profound impact on kids’ lives and if that happens that we can do things together and we know each other and we get along, it is a win-win-win.”

Federer would go on to beat his great rival Nadal 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, but the result paled into insignificane in relation to the magnitude of the ocassion.

“Just one of these days that you don’t forget. Super happy to be playing here in Cape Town for the first time in my life. I can’t thank the people here in Cape Town who came to the stadium and created an unforgettable atmosphere and made this day even more special. Super happy to see Roger’s emotions out there. I know how important it is for him playing here and having this amazing success,” said Nadal.

After the match, Federer was still coming to terms with the emotional occasion, which exceeded his expectations.

“I was very emotional when I walked out for the doubles and when I had to take the mic right away there, that was hard.

I did not know what to say because I really felt overwhelmed with emotions there. After that, I was able to play a bit of tennis and when I came back for the singles, I was more in a place of pure happiness, enjoying every single moment and looking around and thinking how lucky we are to experience this. I hope it gives the city, country and continent and mini-boost.

And that already will be plenty for me. It is never on the same scale of what Siya (Kolisi) and their team did with the Rugby World Cup, but it is nice to have nice stories in a world that can be very tough and cruel sometimes. That I was part of maybe people having a wonderful evening, having a great braai at home and watching this game, that would make me happy.”

Cycle Tour a great success A total of 3 077 cyclists made their way to Durbanville on Saturday for the 22nd Gryphon 99er Cycle Tour, the third largest cycle race in the Western Cape. The 103 km route took them on Van Schoorsdrif, Vissershok, Tygerberg Valley and Contermanskloof Roads.

total of 3 077 cyclists made their way to Durbanville on Saturday for the 22nd Gryphon 99er Cycle Tour.

The event is the third largest cycle race in the Western Cape and is organised and hosted by El Shaddai Christian School in Durbanville.

Craig Boyes won the 103 km men’s event with a time of 2:29:34.

Tyrone Filander won the coveted King of the Mountain prize. Trihas Tesfay won the ladies 103 km with

a time of 2:41:25.

“Conditions were ideal on race day, starting off with cool temperatures and little wind. A fantastic race was enjoyed by all and riders enjoyed the new routes,” says Therese Videler, marketing head of 99er Cycle Tour.

The main lucky draw prize giving at this year’s Gryphon 99er Cycle Tour had R100 000 worth of great prizes up for grabs, which included two Cannondale bicycles from D’Ville Cyclery in Giant Dur-

Tiaan Visagie (69*) het die aanvoorwerk gedoen vir Curro (237/7) se sege met 118 lopies oor HS Bellville (119).

Brackenfell (108/5) het terselfdertyd verras met sy onverwags maklike oorwinning van 5 paaltjies oor Stellenberg. BF von Abo (432) en Jaco Fourie (44) se bydraes vir die Brakke was deurslaggewend.

D.F. Malan (223) het op uiters spannende wyse met ’n enkele lopie teen Parel Vallei (222) gewen, danksy knap bydraes deur David le Roux (49), Henry Bothwell (45) en Heino Verster (40*).

Durbanville (154) was gans te sterk vir Pinelands (77).

Dit was veral die bydraes van Zak du Toit (49) en Tyron Lambrechts (4/23) wat die groot oorwinning moontlik gemaak het.

In die Francor Bakkery-liga vir o.19B-spanne het Stellenberg (t Brackenfell) en Curro Durbanville (t HS Bellville) aan die wenkant geëindig. Fairmont (t De Kuilen), The Settlers (t Tygerberg), Curro (t HS Bellville) en Stellenberg (t Brackenfell) kon almal spog met oorwinnings in die AllSports Travel-liga vir o.15-spanne. Die groot uitblinker was Sean Dednam (Curro, 60). In die L & L Buttner-liga vir o.14-spanne het HS Bellville met ’n grootse spanpoging maklik met Fairbairn afgereken terwyl Brackenfell te sterk was vir Stellenberg.
