P

roperty related crime in Brackenfell is expected to decrease even more this year as neighbourhood watches, and private security companies strengthen their partnership with police. Statistics has shown that crimes such as theft of, and out of motor vehicles, busi-

ness and house burglaries, had already started taken a downward trend between 2018 and 2019, with a 19% decrease. These numbers were confirmed by Brackenfell police commander Col Jakobus Marthinus at the annual meeting of the Brackenfell Community Police Forum (CPF) last Monday night, (3 February). “In this day and age there is absolutely no possibility that the police can address crime

on our own. To curb the tide we have to have a strong partnership and good relationship with our communities,” he told role-players. There was also a 12% decrease in reported cases of arson and malicious damage to property. In addition, theft, commercial crime and shoplifting had decreased by 23%. While house and business robberies decreased by about 28%, there was an increase in car jackings, where Uber drivers were tar-

geted. According to Marthinus, this has become a crime trend in the northern suburbs. Furthermore, arrests for drug related crimes and drinking and driving has increased.
