njured at birth, seven-year-old Antoni van Reenen from Brackenfell has never let the challenges in his life wipe the smile off his young face. He was injured at birth and left with brain damage, cerebral palsy and vocal cord paralysis due to oxygen negligence. His mother, Marili, says their lives have changed and as a family they have learned to appreciate life’s little blessings. “We struggle to keep our heads above water and give Antoni all the things he needs. He has taught us so much about life, and we as a family have learned to appreciate the little things in life.” Marili says that it has not been easy for
the family, as not many people understand what it is like to have a special needs child, or how tired you are, or how each day is a struggle, and all the worries that come with it. “Even after seven years, the stares we get when we go out still hurt so much.” But she believes all of that will take a turn for the better after little Antoni’s imminent stem cell treatment in Mumbai. He and Marili will be flying to India on 10 August, where Antoni will undergo a sevenday treatment course at NeuroGen. The costs of the trip have been covered, but the family still needs assistance with the treatment and intense therapy Antoni will undergo when he returns home. Marili says all of this would not have been possible if it were not for Steve Roberts and

the members of the Masonic Lodge (Lodge Claremont). “Steve moved mountains to help my son. With his help and Club Travel’s sponsorship of our flights, Antoni will undergo the treatment he needs,” she says. Roberts explained to TygerBurger how he first became involved: “Mauritz (Antoni’s father) and I are in the same Masonic Lodge (Lodge Claremont), and part of the Scottish constitution. A few months ago he came to us to discuss the problems Antoni has suffered since birth. He then showed us the groundbreaking treatment that is available in Mumbai and which could help Antoni. As a group, we decided to try and raise money to assist with the treatment costs of approximately R150 000.” V To page 2.

There are so many phenomenal women with whom we share our daily lives – our mothers, wives, children, neighbours, best friends – most of them anchors who help steer our lives with steadfast care and love. With August being Women’s Month, we at TygerBurger and our sister publications (People’s Post and City Vision) wish to honour the women in our lives by honouring those women who have experienced and beaten the worst of life’s hardships and ills, emerging as survivors, proud and dignified. Please help us to help restore a little of this dignity as we once again embark on a special monthly campaign by providing Bags of Hope – literally, handbags filled with all the essentials a rape or abuse survivor might need. Two years ago the Chill Room in our offices was filled to the brim with these Bags of Hope, which contained everything from bras and panties to sanitary pads, perfume and talc, washcloths and soap, toothpaste and chocolates. In some cases, the bags contained a handwritten note wishing the receiver well on her journey to recovery and a life outside of abuse and violence. We are hoping to recreate this female pantry and be able to donate all the items we receive to a charity of our readers’ choosing. For this, we are once more calling for help from our loyal readers – those caring people who have supported our monthly campaigns so faithfully since the beginning of the year. So, if you have a handbag or two and the means to fill it with what you would have appreciated were you a recipient yourself, please bring it to our offices. We will ensure it goes to a place where it will bring light and joy amid pain and suffering. V Donate, and nominate your charity at briewe@tyg erburger.co.za. V Delivery is on the third floor of the Bloemhof Build ing at 112 Edward Street, and at Vangate Mall.
