OLD SCAM MAKES REAPPEARANCE: ‘COPS’ OFFER WOMAN SHARE OF ‘FOUND’ CASH, THEN ROB HER OF HER POSSESSIONS
‘Old’ scam is back DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke
A
38-year old woman last week fell victim to an old hoax, resulting in her jewellery and cash being stolen. When leaving a shop at Brackenfell Centre at about 10:30 on Wednesday, the woman saw what looked like a thick wad of cash lying on the ground. “She picked it up and approached the man
walking in front of her, wanting to know if it was his money,” says Brackenfell police spokesperson, Captain Erica Crous. “The man told her to come around the corner with him, where another man was waiting in a black car that was parked there. “He presented himself as a police officer and told the woman they could split the money, but that the other man had to first go into the shop to ‘swap’ the notes. “She could then go to a specific till in the
shop where she could ‘collect’ her share of the money, but she had to leave her bag and all her personal belongings with them in order to do this,” explains Crous. The cashier at the till had no idea what the woman was talking about and by the time she returned, both the men and the car were gone – with her handbag, cash and jewellery. Crous says it sounds absurd that one could fall for such an “illogical story”, but she adds that financial desperation could be a motiva-
tor. In another incident later in the week, the same thing happened to a young girl from Kraaifontein, but she did not fall for the hoax and reported it to Brackenfell police. “Similar incidents were reported a few years ago in Brackenfell and we urge the public to be on the lookout,” she says.
